An image was recently posted to MacRumors’ forums by a “macrumors newbie” named “greenrabbit.”
Is this the first pre-Macworld Expo leaked image of Apple’s rumored ultra-thin subportable, complete with a nice wide trackpad loaded with multi-touch goodness? For some, that giant wide single button might raise the red flag of fake; it just doesn’t seem to make Apple-sense design-wise to us. It’s “non-Ivesian,” if you will — unless it has new uses previously unseen (for example, perhaps the left and right sides rock on a central pivot, so the button can have multiple uses. We call dibs on that idea, Apple, but it’s available for purchase). All that naysaying said, now watch them release it just like that on the 15th.
It’s that time of the year. So, real or fake, what do you think?

I don’t buy it, simply because there’s nothing in the new model that couldn’t be taken from an existing model and used in photoshop to create this fake photo.
It’s just hard for me to believe that Apple would have been working for so long on something that so closely resembles old products that have been around for years now.
A wider trackpad is hardly a revolutionary feature…
Ergonomically the wide button does make sense. It enables you to easily click no matter where your hand is on the trackpad.

Anything located under a notebook would be, of course, subnotebook. In that case, I already have a subnotebook desk!
If this is real, wouldn’t this have to be sitting on someone’s desk at Apple? It would be pretty easy to track down the culprit I would think. I doubt there are very many floating around and they’re going to be keeping a really close watch on those that are.

Why in the world do sites fall for this each time. If that was real, there would be 100 clear and pristine photos of it. For heaven’s sake, we even take 20 pictures of the boxes.
The shadow on the “sub” looks wrong.
This image is not real. I don’t believe for a minute that Apple would design a laptop that would require you to rest your palms on the track pad. That makes no sense. Even if it were programmed to ignore palm touches, it still gets dirty from sweaty palms and works less efficiently.
I’m sure Apple will make the next touch pad multi touch, but it doesn’t need to be wide to be effective. The iPhone is a great example of this.
I say fraud. I would hope fraud too, because this doesn’t look like much of a step forward for Apple. They are capable of so much better.
The shadow CAST by the sub looks wrong. To be more clear.

Look at the keyboard. It’s just like the current MacBook Pro’s, and in fact this looks just like a smaller, thinner MacBook Pro with the wider trackpad/button.
Isn’t Apple moving to the keyboard design used in the MacBook and the new aluminum wired and wireless keyboards?
If Apple is introducing an entirely new design, how likely is it the company would make it look just like the older MacBook Pro, which already looks much like its PowerBook predecessor?
I wide trackpad and button makes sense, but not THAT wide. You need to rest your palms on the area taken up by that wide button. I can understand if the trackpad was that wide, because it can be designed to not recognize palm contact (versus finger tip contact), but not the button. I have to say this is not the real thing.
So the new laptops are going to have a special gesture based track pad interface while the desktops are left behind, or are required to get some type of add on….I don’t buy it.
If Apple is going to greatly enhance/replace the mouse/track pad its going to be across the board with all of their products.

Fake. Apple will be moving to the new macbook style keyboard for all products, including the macbook pros. The new subnotebook will have the same design as the aluminum desktop keyboard Apple currently offers. The 15″ and 17″ macbook pros will also be updated to have the new keyboard as well (along with 17″ LED backlighting).
PALM problem when typeing so – not real — GO BAKE A FAKE!
Oh, and the new subnotebook will be the first to have the entire palmrest as a trackpad. It will be a very clean design, possibly even sensing the movement thru the an aluminum layer, so the palm rest area is just a clean, solid surface.
And possibly no more mouse button either (maybe a home button on the side of the front though), it will all be virtual thru multi-touch, like the iPhone.
Apple has patented technology to know when your plams are resting when typing to disable the trackpad.
I’m not really a photoshop expert, but I’ve dabbled in it quite a bit. So take what I’m going to say with a grain of salt.
There doesn’t seem to be a latch. That’s a give-away. The same in a MBP would require the thing to be thicker than it is in this photo, and they couldn’t have used the MacBook groove in photoshop without a whole lot of work. They started with a MBP and thinned it, and had to cover the latch holes (badly done). Another clue is the squeezed ports on the side.
However, Apple might have come up with a new mechanism of keeping the thing closed. So there you have it.
Still thinks it needs an optical drive.

Shadows are all wrong. The light source would be visible if it was producing those shadows.
Picture is FAKE. Look at the key board. It is ancient. The style is also ancient. MacBook Nano will be the size of MacBook,MINUS the edges around the key board and screen would have minimal edge like iPhone. This will make this mini note book about an inch or more shorter in width and depth and still maintain 13″ screen. Wonder will they would introduce the iPod Nano colors !!

Trackpad and button combo does not make sense. Overall dimensions not appropriate to a genuine sub-notebook – too close to MacBook overall and Apple would not self compete like that.

It’s a fake. It’s a very good fake but a fake. The creator had a little trouble making the keyboard. Notice how high it sits!?? It could be a shadow, but it’s not all shadow.
Shadows and perspective are off on the sub. There is blurring on the left side of the keyboard where they have tried to add lighting effects. Ports are also too small.
As I suggest in my article (in italian , link below) the book you see in background is Dan Brown’s Angels And Demons… in Swedish. You may read just a piece of the title ( Anglar Och ) but it’s enough to understand it’s Anglar och Demoner, wich of course means Angels And Demons. I don’t think Apple would ship a prototype of a revolutionary notebook across the oceans for a swedish geek in a chill and guttural languaged land to test it. Well, this guy may be quite a nostalgic immigrant too, who knows? Anyway, nobody noticed the icons in the docks are exactly place in the same position in the two computers. Me, I think this is a well cooked photoshop scam. Intentionally made Jpeg compression artifacts are the nuage that makes this brilliant.

I hate to say it, kids, but this looks plausible. For one, the light source is coming from above and between the two computers, making it entirely possible for the shadows to break in both directions. (I worked as an advertising photographer for years, and I know how shadows break with respect to illumination).
Second, the keyboard appears to be that of the MacBook Pro variety, and this new laptop Mac is likely to be of the Pro heritage, not the plan MacBook group.
As for a latch, don’t be so limited. If it uses a magnetic latch, it might not need any button at all, especially given how thin the design would be.
As for the trackpad, its large size would be indicative of Multi-Touch gesture capabilities. Instead of all the silly rumors about a “Newton” (pulleeeze – give me break – Mr. Jobs hates tablets) with Multi-Touch technology ported from the iPhone, it would make sense to use Multi-Touch instead for the trackpad. We saw this in the last version of the MacBooks and MacBook Pros in a small way, and it would not surprise me if Apple is trying to use gesture technology to broaden the capabilities of the trackpad.
I really hate to say this, but I think it’s very plausible that this is for real. If so, take a long look, because Apple’s attorneys will swoop down pretty hot and hard with a cease-and-desist letter on this site and others.

Look at the perspective and the relative sizes of the ports on the right. If that’s an ultraportable macbook, then they’ve managed to also shrink the size of USB ports. For example, the width of the ultraportable would be the same as a headphone jack.

I agree with ‘Differing view’. The photo does not look fake to me. There are a lot of subtleties in the shadows and highlights that someone other than an expert at retouching would not be apt to come up with. There are a lot of good reasons why it should be fake, but I work in PhotoShop a lot creating composites and producing the photo shown would be a lot of work.

Apple needs to leap frog the expectations here and really come through on Multi-touch.
Otherwise, the competitors will be multi-interfacing soon.

Why is the same screen dump or background used on both computers? Maybe because all they did was use the same computer – turned it in a different direction of the light, move the icons around, throw some dock icons out, add a few. It’s not that difficult. It’s a fake. Your also missing the light reflected off the top of the sub. Why does the MBP have it – and not the Sub? Why is there no bright reflection on the IPod window – if it’s facing the back of the Sub’s top surface – surely – there would be a huge reflection of ambient and reflective light.
Those ain’t ports on the side – its a mini optical slot.
Smaller disc means less to spin hence saving battery drain.

This is a picture taken of two current laptops. the right has easily been altered to squeeze or truncate dimensions and add and optical drive.
If Apple were to make a track pad larger…
1) it would cover the entire portion below the keyboard.
2) multi-touch gesture does not require a button to comfirm, you just tap… a function possible since 10.2.8 set to any track pad so you done’t need the clicker button.
3) the size is not 13.3 inches claimed by the recent orders made by Apple.
4) those lcd were touch screens… the new sub-notebook is all multi-touch. No keyboard at all.

What’s all the excitement about-there is no subnotebook coming people, nor will “touch” be incorporated into the iMacs. Get over it.
It’s a good one, but it’s a fake. It was two separate shots of the same laptop in two positions. The “fake” one was cropped, retouched and dropped into the original photo.
Proof? Look at the icons on the right side of the desktop. He forgot to change them, so he photoshopped the two bottom ones out on the left macbook and the middle two out of the “fake” one. You can see the rub out where the icons were when you zoom in.
(I think his battery was running low when he took the second shot though, and that worked well for him.)
He altered the dock slightly, but at least ChrissyOne should be happy he’s running CS3 on both of them…

Wide trackpad & button – nonsense
Actually, for those who talked about shading, it is the best part of the mockup. The angles are very accurate, for most of the image. The light source is in the center behind both notebooks.
This is a fake, and that has been conclusively demonstrated by experienced image processing people:
1- The fact that the only part of the image with linear gradation of the shadow is the expanded trackpad (seems like a cut & paste job given the visible seem) is shown inthis post (scroll down to post #185 on the page)
and
2- The emphasis on the scaled down ports and a bit of sloppy painting was demonstrated inthis post (scroll down to post #338 on the page)
3- Another thing I noticed after magnifying the image is an unevenness in the subnotebook’s keyboard: look at the top row (fn keys) and the 2nd row (number keys) – not on the same plane. This might also be a pixelation effect though (this is a highly compressed image with poor resolution).
This wasn’t meant to be real… maybe you should try reading the forum this was taken from before posting it as a possible real spy shot.
I/O ports look too thin (squished vertically). Shadow is sharp on the left, but fuzzy on the right. Giant button looks ridiculous. Fake.

Such design makes no sense. Where are you supposed to rest your palms? Fake. Although I do like the overall look of it.
Also, the perspective is wrong on the subnotebook; it looks like it kind of sits at an angle into the table. The notebook that that picture was based on was photographed at a much lower angle.
I can’t believe that nobody else can see that.
I’m convinced by:
1) Looking at the icons on the screen. I think you really can see the rub out mark on the screen of the left one (it messes up the desktop image, leaving a dark mark where the icon was in the bottom right of the screen) and the right one, where you can only sort of tell in magnification that the bottom two icons were rubbed out. @Essence
2) From the post above about the right laptop’s shadow on the triangular white sheet of paper. It gets sloppy toward the right side of the paper where it looks like a person’s hand jiggled while drawing.
Besides, that massive button is heinous.
But some folks think Apple did this? Image that being your job. Boss comes in, hey, can you take the next two days and make me three images of fake laptops? We’re going to leak the best one.

Also, I would like to add… Apple wouldn’t let anything new onto just anyones desk, you’d think an apple representative would have the latest or at least a recent iPod. Not a 1st gen nano.
The image looks like a normal photo with no evidence of fakery. None of the “clues” for a fake mentioned above holds water. Perspective, lighting, focus all seem consistent (the light source is between the two machines, hence the direction of shadows).
It could of course be an internal prototype which will never see the light of an Apple Store, but it is perfectly plausible as somebody’s work desk at Apple.
In just a few days we’ll see.

Well, I *am* a Photoshop expert, and when I take a closer look at this, it gets worse and worse…
In the center of the trackpad on the “WeeBook”, there is a smudge were the gradation from left to right is uneven and too abrupt.
The line of the top of the track button is blurry on the left side, and especially bad at the top corner, where there is a slight inward notch. Why does it stick up so much farther than the normal MacBook Pro?
The area around the higher F keys looks horrendous. The last 4 blur together with the keys below them.
It’s running at least 4 apps from CS3. Looks like Dreamweaver, Fireworks, Flash, and maybe Premier. The same apps that are on the big’un, and in the same order in the dock. So, you get an early copy of Apple’s new toy, spirit it away to Sweden, and immediately load it up with the Master Collection?
And speaking of Swedish – How many people do you think would have access to this prototype? Okay, how many of them do you think speak Swedish, and speak it fluently enough to enjoy a Dan Brown book written in it? My guess is, not very many. It would be monumentally stupid to give yourself away like this, and I would expect Steve would be knocking on your office door in short order with a pink slip and a bazooka before you could say “jävla dum”.
Back to the shadow again – The lower left corner doesn’t line up with the light source properly. You can estimate, from the way the light wraps around the rounded edge where it’s being lit from, but the shadow it casts on the table below is too vertical. It should angle more to the right. If you look at the slim shadow (slim shady?) that the paper below casts, it is more to the right, rotated more counter-clockwise, than that. Instead, it looks to be about the same angle as the iPhone casts, which would be wrong for the “WeeBook” as it’s at a different angle to the light. Looks like somebody forgot to click off Use Global Light. The chunky shadow on the paper doesn’t help, either.
Come on, now. I could take a better picture than this with an lousy iPhone camera, fercrissakes. And there is an iPhone SITTING RIGHT THERE. If I had the chance, I’d take clear, dead-on square, hi res shots of an early Apple product that I wanted to leak to the interweb, not sketchy Loch Ness Monster quality snow job like this. Remember that German movie of the supposed PDA years ago? I’m convinced it was an Apple-created put-on, and this is, too.
As always, the best barometer for real/fake is to wait for Apple to issue a cease & desist. If they do, it means that it’s real. If not, fake.

– switch off the “Arrange by…” option
As an aside, ports are indeed an issue in Apple’s subnotebook. After all, a FW400 port (not to mention 800) has a certain width, particularly if it is to be powered. I wonder if Apple might use a whole new connector – like the 30-pin dock connector, for example. It has been made to run USB and Firewire signals in the past, so theoretically you could hook it to a mouse cable or peripheral adapter hub. But when not using those peripherals, the stand-alone subnotebook only has to be wide enough for processor(s), FLASH module(s), battery, motherboard and keypad (chiclet-style), and the screen (OLED vs. LED). The optical drive would be a bolt-on attachment (and probably should include an additional battery supply, as well), but in the age of digital media, iTunes, etc., is probably not really necessary. Most people with a subnotebook will have a ‘real’ computer to upgrade and sync it with, easily done by Bonjour, ‘back-to-my’Mac’, etc.

The Asus Eee Pc only has a couple of gigabytes of storage, a celeron based processor, and is running some crappy customized linux distro. You would need to install Ubuntu or Windows Xp to make it useful. This fake is running OS X which means it probably has some decent specs. The only good thing about the Eee Pc is size.
The new iPhone also in the picture – it’s the new iPhone Nano – featuring the rotary dial mentioned in the recent patent.

That is almost certainly not a problem. Any halfway decent “multi-touch” implementation of this kind will have palm detection & filtering. That’s one of the easier things to do once you’re going there.
If Apple hasn’t issued a legal order to take it down, it’s a fake.
Some guy in Sweden simply photoshopped this. I have a hard time imagining that someone in Cupertino happened to be reading “Anglar och Demoner” (Dan Brown’s “Angels and Demons”) in Swedish while QA’ing his pre-production MacSubNotebook. It’s not impossible — just implausible from my point of view that this originated from someone connected to Apple (or to the Chinese plants producing the alleged new subnotebooks).
The book on the right side of the picture is Dan Browns Angels and Daemons but in SWEDISH. The propability for a new unreleased version ending up in Sweden is quite small… He could be a Swede working at Apple though…

It is totally fake! Look at the icons on the dock!. You can see that both of the screen shots were taken from the same computer because all of the icons(non-active) are in the exact same order.
It looks like a 12″ Powerbook with an iSight P-Chopped in and the trackpad widened…

People have talked of a mini-tablet – i.e. a 7″ or 10″ iPhone like device. Just not sure how that complements the iPhone or a MacBook.
I think the Ultra-Portable will be slotted in between the MacBook and MBP price-wise.
I can’t see Apple introducing a third product to carry around (iPhone/MB/Small Tablet).
Therefore, even if this pic is a fake, it seems plausible that something very similar will be forthcoming at MWSF 2008.

the funny thing is that the desk it is sitting on looks EXACTLY like one of the cadet desks at my alma matter: New Mexico Military Institute. i seem to remember there were a few cadets there with a LOT of time on there hands and they were very skilled with PS.

I’m not a photoshop expert either, but I think a very bright spot light somewhere just over the ipod would create the shadows that are shown. Still, to me it looks like a fake because of all the previous functionality issues already pointed out.
