“In its first full quarter of sales, the iPhone has already climbed past Microsoft’s entire lineup of Windows Mobile smartphones in North America, according to figures compiled by Canalys and published by Symbian. That puts the iPhone ahead of smartphones running Symbian, Linux, and the Palm OS, but behind the first place RIM BlackBerry. The figures mesh with retail sales data already reported by NPD, which similarly described the size of the US market with a 27% chunk bit out by Apple’s iPhone,” Daniel Eran Dilger reports for RoughlyDrafted.
“Apple’s debut at second place across the entire North American smartphone market region for the third quarter ending in September is particularly noteworthy because the iPhone was only being sold in the US, and is only available through AT&T; all of the other mobile platforms are available to Sprint, Verizon Wireless, and T-Mobile as well as AT&T,” Dilger reports. “The iPhone wasn’t available in the significant markets of Canada and Mexico, along with parts of the US that AT&T does not service, including much of Vermont, North Dakota, South Dakota, and Alaska.”

There’s no chance that the iPhone is going to get any significant market share. No chance. – Microsoft CEO Steve Ballmer, April, 2007
Microsoft CEO Ballmer laughs at Apple iPhone, January 17, 2007:

peaPod asks, “Why does Ballmer still have a job?” Maybe because he’s probably still the second largest shareholder in the company. So I guess he’ll leave when he’s good and ready. Which suits us just fine. Let him go down with the ship.
Winston,
So true. A good friend of mine is a very high ranking police officer who meets with Street on an almost daily basis. The stats he cites about crime and the police are completely made up – almost all the time!
Ampar,
But the highlight of their new traveling show will be when Ballmer (Uncle Fester) shows how many light bulbs he stick in his mouth and light up. Turtle Boy gets in on the act, too, but I’m not going to say where he sticks his light bulb. Let’s just say that Gates’ routinely refers to Vista as Fista.
You can understand why Gates decided to bail from Microsoft.
Why did they put that oaf Ballmer in charge is beyond me. Note how he has been publicly invisible since those idiotic iPhone comments.
Wait till Google release their mobile software. There will be even less Windows mobiles out there!

Love that video, think we will see a lot of it in the future as well
I like steve ballmer
so so very much
@Viktor
TELCEL is not selling the iPhone at any of the “company” stores or offering data plans for an iPhone like they do for the blackberry
You are seeing iPhones being sold at “privately owned TELCEL resellers”. They are bring them down and unlocking them for resale, with out an Apple warranty and they run on pay as you go Amigo cards. They are averaging around $7,000.00mn (peso)
It will be a long time before we see an “official” iPhone in Mexico, 1st indication is when we get an iTunes store.
You can find an iPhone in any country in the world,
I have been using mine in Mexico since June (unlocked)

Re: Using an ampersand in MDN feedback.
I use the HTML code for ampersand.
& = ampersand symbol followed by amp with a semi-colon and no spaces

Hey Stevie: If you’re still interested in the mobile market, you can do something creative for a change and buy a few Apple shares
I’m sure nobody here will say anything.
@HotinPlaya
You are absolutely right, they sell it for 8500 in monterrey (I got it for 6000 pesos, but not from Telcel)
Too bad that Carlos Slim is a Share holder from apple and he can not bring the iPhone to his companies (Telcel and America Movil).
Ealier this year Apple had sold zero phones. M$ competed fairly well against the iPhone prior to its release. Not a surprise, even for M$.
Less that 6 months after actually being released for sale* selling zero the iPhone is kicking M$’s butt. Again, not a surprise.
What Ballmer would like is far different from reality. However, Bobo has the last laugh because he could probably buy the lifetime labor output of all of the MDN regulars and still have a lot of money left over. How’s that for irony.
“However, Bobo has the last laugh because he could probably buy the lifetime labor output of all of the MDN regulars and still have a lot of money left over.”
Very true. But I’ll bet his personal chef regularly spits in his food.
@dd
True, I have some Mac-bashing colleagues who are using OS X without even realizing (they have an iPod touch).
“Why does Ballmer still have a job?”
Probably because the largest individual shareholder still supports him.

Come on MDN, you know the truth. The iPhone is a slick toy, but for true business users, it blows. When the Zune phone arrives, it will bring Apple to it’s knees.
Balmer is one of the smartest guys on the planet. He can lead his troops into battle, unlike Shepherd Jobs, who just teases you with his no substance approach.
> There’s no chance that the iPhone is going to get any significant market share. No chance.
So I guess that just means Windows Mobile never had any “significant market share.”
LOL. That video is classic. You should add the video in which Ballmer promotes that wannabee HTC TouchFlo phone… it ain’t got no keyboard either! What a joke.
“I love how he seems visibly uncomfortable in that interview.”
ummm, i hate to break it to you, but that is just Balmer. he ALWAYS looks visibly uncomfortable. he is clearly not at home with himself….
reminds me of the “Mac test” by some author of photoshop books. he said that if the person walking up to him in the workshop seemed comfortable in their own skin, 90% of the time they were Mac users. if they had a pocket protector or seemed generally uncomfortable, bad posture, dorky looking, most of the time they were windows users.
Balmer is the mold for windows users. he and Billy both. it is like they spawned the zombie world that is windows users in an evil and disgusting orgy like ritual….
….sorry for the mental image. ” width=”19″ height=”19″ alt=”wink” style=”border:0;” />
“You can get a Motorola Q for $99. It’ll do email, it’ll internet, it’ll do music.”
And does them all poorly. That’s what they don’t understand. Still selling features and not benefits.
Hey guys did you see the video from the ‘Late Late Show’ with Craig Ferguson about the iPhone!!!.
It is soooo Funny!!!!
I have a theory about the poster using the nickname “Realist.” Remember how, before username registration was possible, sometimes Zune Tang would post something really clever, and sometimes really just stupid? It seems the less clever one didn’t register the username in time.
“Windows Mobile smartphones”
There’s just something too disturbing about the words “Windows” and “smart…” appearing in the same sentence.
It gives me the willies.
“It gives me the willies.”
And it’s time to free the willies.
