Apple iPhone already leads Windows Mobile in North American market share, Q3 2007

“In its first full quarter of sales, the iPhone has already climbed past Microsoft’s entire lineup of Windows Mobile smartphones in North America, according to figures compiled by Canalys and published by Symbian. That puts the iPhone ahead of smartphones running Symbian, Linux, and the Palm OS, but behind the first place RIM BlackBerry. The figures mesh with retail sales data already reported by NPD, which similarly described the size of the US market with a 27% chunk bit out by Apple’s iPhone,” Daniel Eran Dilger reports for RoughlyDrafted.

“Apple’s debut at second place across the entire North American smartphone market region for the third quarter ending in September is particularly noteworthy because the iPhone was only being sold in the US, and is only available through AT&T; all of the other mobile platforms are available to Sprint, Verizon Wireless, and T-Mobile as well as AT&T,” Dilger reports. “The iPhone wasn’t available in the significant markets of Canada and Mexico, along with parts of the US that AT&T does not service, including much of Vermont, North Dakota, South Dakota, and Alaska.”

There’s no chance that the iPhone is going to get any significant market share. No chance.Microsoft CEO Steve Ballmer, April, 2007

  1. Said it before and I’ll say it again. Pretty soon, people ALL over the world will own Macintosh computers in the form of a phone. Once that happens, why would you want a Windows box?

  2. The iPhone may not be available in Mexico but I have a lot of friends, who like me are using it. In fact I would say that the same stats obtained in the U.S. apply to the people I know in the IT industry.

  3. To Ballmer-

How does it feel to be a f-ing idiot? How are you going to spin this one? You are beaten. It’s only a matter of time. Eventually you and Gatesy will be exposed for the dumbasses you are. Pushing inferior, buggy, swiss cheese, infested, illogical software to the masses for years. I will enjoy watching you fall.

  4. Even funnier quote:

“…But if you actually take a look at the 1.3 billion phones that get sold, I’d prefer to have our software in 60% or 70% or 80% of them, than I would to have 2% or 3%, which is what Apple might get.”

I’m sure he would prefer to have that much; apparently, he never did, nor will he ever get anywhere near that much. And Apple is fast approaching its target.

I can’t wait for the next chance some creative, resourceful journalist would get to talk to Ballmer, to pull out these statements and call him on that. I would pay good money just to see the reaction on Ballmer’s face and here him squirm.

  5. TELCEL is already selling the iPhone in Mexico, but they sell it with no contract. The weird thing is that you can buy a iphone in almost any TELCEL retail store, but their web page does not states that they are the official distribuitor of the iphne.
