Sadly, Know-nothingism is as American as apple pie. Texas, I suggest that next time you need surgery, you let me do it. I’m sure I can muster a strong opinion on whatever ails you and I’m unencumbered by all that medical training that might rob me of common sense. Stop worshiping ignorance as the wellspring of sense.

The complaint that the MSM is liberally biased is pretty absurd. They got so afraid of that smear that they’ve bent over backwards not to challenge obvious distortions and misrepresentations of facts by the right wing. Take the recent confusion over Iran: how many times have you heard anyone in MSM say that the president lied about the state of Iran’s nuclear program? We now know that he was presented with evidence contrary to what he wanted to hear, yet proceeded to tell the American people just what he’d planned to say anyway. He knew one thing to be true, yet said that another thing was true. That’s called a lie. It’s far from the first time. I happen to believe that Iran poses a serious threat, but his constant lies and failure have undermined both our military and diplomatic capacity to deal with that threat. Yet right-wingers continue to believe that he and his would be successors in the primary field are keeping us safe because they talk tough (even when that’s counterproductive).

So the MSM hasn’t pointed out that Bush, Cheney, et al are liars, but much worse than that, they haven’t done a very good job of presenting the facts that prove it. Their common practice now is to recite the positions of two sides of any issue (regardless how many sides there may be), exactly as given by the most vitriolic proponent of each side, and claim that that represents balance. They’ve forgotten an important component of journalism: fact checking and research.
So, yes, all news sources are flawed, but only FOX actually consistently portrays a single political outlook and lets it affect their coverage. Even the WSJ, openly conservative in their editorials, screens that side from their reportage.

The true liberal media is outlets like Mother Jones, and note that while FOX and that side rely primarily on commentators, MJ, the Nation, and the like specialize in investigative, long-form reportage. Of, you know… fact.

  2. TowerTone, et al,

You make a very good point about all cable/network news divisions having their own agenda, that being a corporate, profit-driven agenda. “Objective” journalism, if it even exists, is at best secondary to making money.

Having said that, Fox News stands alone in its blatant, self-admitted support of Republican and conservative ideas (not the same in the Bush era – ask Ron Paul). Fox’s President, Roger Ailes, former media adviser to Nixon/Reagan/HWBush, has made public admissions about his intent to use Fox to support the Bush administration. He has infamously written memos to his news producers to make Fox coverage “fairer” to right-wing talking points. Cheney feels he’ll get “fair” treatment on Fox, and does. All fine, there’s clearly a (shrinking) audience for this. Just don’t pretend that Fox’s right-wing editorializing and reposting White House press releases is bias-free news. And this pervasive, conspicuous bias is unique in the traditional media.

Frank, great posts. Dead on right. For those that claim Fox is more objective because of its bias, you might look a little closer. Colbert said it best, “reality has a well-known liberal bias.”

BTW, making money is great, but I think everyone would agree that the news product changes when ratings are the first priority.

  3. BTW, I don’t “shout down” crappy reporting or obvious bias, or anything else I find on FOX. I don’t “shout down” my others when they present a flawed argument. I argue against it. With reason. You may not have recognized reason if you’ve been watching FOX for too long.
It very strange that right wingers here and elsewhere yell hallelujah for FOX, then claim that liberals can’t stand dissent… and then devolve to flaming people who are trying to discuss the issue. They claim to love discourse and alternate points of view, and then scream insults whenever they see it. At least it’s better than their president, who extolls the value of free speech even as he screens dissenters from his appearances, cordons them off into isolated “free speech zones” and/or has them arrested for such terroristic acts as wearing T-Shirts.
As far as I’m concerned, this whole country is a “Free Speech Zone”, and only one recent administration has tried to put that behind chain link.

  4. Anyone reading this thread will quickly notice how the Fox advocates 1) readily admit Fox’s bias, 2) frequently claim widespread liberal bias in the traditional media without citing specifics, and 3) resort to ridicule and caricatures. They seem to be just out of ideas.

  5. javester,

That is the most intelligence response I have ever had when talking to someone that is pro man made global warming!

I am not a trained scientist but I have developed products for many years. I deal with research (very serious product research) and find that we always question where we are and did we get all the correct information. That being said, when all hear that all scientists agree 100% on MMGW. Well I find that very strange and something is very odd.

Now to your response on modify behavior. Your point is well taken and I agree. I have always believed that we need to be responsible with the Earth’s resources. Much of the work we are doing carries responsible design (the stories I could tell about the work we have done).

But to yell fire or hypocritical preaching just does not fly with me (and others). These extremists have many silly answers with no awareness of consequence. Many want to shove the genie back into the bottle. But we cannot cut the worlds population and our need for energy.

There are great answers all round us!

  6. Good for FoxNews. Nice to see they’re supporting the iPhone. Maybe it will help clear some of the liberal stench surrounding the Apple brand and the Apple fan base.

I’m a conservative with a 4-year old 15″ PowerBook G4, three iPods, two iPhones, an Intel Mac Pro, and a new 15″ MacBook Pro. I love the brand but hate the aura of liberalism surrounding it.

  7. And I find your answers cogent, considered and non-hysterical… ” width=”19″ height=”19″ alt=”smile” style=”border:0;” />

And yes, its nice to know that we can carry on an intelligent discussion minus the name-calling.

One thing though, I’m not strictly “pro man-made global warming” (again, the problem with “labels”) ” width=”19″ height=”19″ alt=”smile” style=”border:0;” /> If anything, I consider myself an activist for a proactive intervention/correction of our consumption/energy production patterns.

As you rightly put, we cannot shove the genie back in the bottle as the world’s population continues to balloon and India and China middle classes start following Western consumption patterns.

I think we can all agree that we cannot stay with the status quo and we need to embark on a comprehensive energy makeover ala JFK’s “Man on the Moon in 10 years” clarion call.

    We can do it!

  8. Good for FoxNews. Nice to see they’re supporting the iPhone.

All the libs hop on and bash anything conservative here, and it gives the Apple brand (and macdailynews) a distinctly bad stench. I’m a conservative, and I’ve got a 4-year old 15″ PowerBook G4, three iPods, two iPhones, an Intel Mac Pro, and a new 15″ MacBook Pro.

Here’s a news flash for you: Apple owner does not equal liberal. Go have fun with your like-minded little selves on Kos and keep the Mac news apolitical here, please.

  9. @ begins with “F’ and ends with “ucked up” and the rest that had a mouthful to say.

Are you saying that Fox gets its info wrong or just plain lies? Because if you are really as “critical thinkers” as you play, then you watch them all, and notice who leaves out what, and then you ask yourself, “well, I read this and this in the papers and on the web, and saw it on other networks, yet this channel didn’t give all the news that I had already seen” and then you wonder, what is it that was left out that matters? There was no lying, but not telling the entire story is just as misleading as fabrications. I see this all the time, but it is mainly on the major networks.

It is incredible to me that people on the right KNOW that Fox has a Conservative angle (and more info to that end. Hell, that is why so many people watch it). Yet when the left see a “mainstream” news network give a story that most on the right can spot a mile away as having a bias, the left just considers this standard reporting. Nothing slanted about it. But, oh, Goddam that Fox.

How can y’all be so enlightened when your head is buried in the sand?

  10. TowerTone

You are a man after my own heart when it comes to news bias.

Everyone pics news channels and political parties like Football Teams these days and refuse to think for themselves.

Wait a minute…isn’t this a Mac page. Go APPLE!!!

  11. javester,

    Sorry about the label.

I believe we needed to do this comprehensive energy makeover back in the 80’s (I am telling my age). However the question is whose agenda, Al Gore’s?

The last thing we need in this world is more hype, with big Government answers. All I can see is more taxes, more problems and sloppy answers. And when the general public is not responding to things like carbon credits than what? I see many willing to head toward socialism even now.

Look at what happen to all the hype in the 60/70’s on the population explosion. I remember my school teachers telling us that by 2010 we will be standing shoulder to shoulder on this Earth. That’s if we don’t stop or seriously slow down the birth rate. The only thing that came out of that hype was Government Plain Parenthood.

  12. Here’s why the Libs hate (and fear) FOX News Channel (FNC):

Cable News Daily Live Ratings for December 6, 2007:

    P2+ Total Day
    FNC – 967,000 viewers
    CNN – 500,000 viewers
    MSNBC – 325,000 viewers
    CNBC – 255,000 viewers
    HLN – 216,000 viewers

    P2+ Prime Time
    FNC – 1,871,000 viewers
    CNN – 572,000 viewers
    MSNBC- 700,000 viewers
    CNBC – 304,000 viewers
    HLN – 306,000 viewers

    25-54 Total Day
    FNC – 267,000 viewers
    CNN – 162,000 viewers
    MSNBC – 98,000 viewers
    CNBC – 79,000 viewers
    HLN- 85,000 viewers

    25-54 Prime Time
    FNC – 381,000 viewers
    CNN – 184,000 viewers
    MSNBC – 255,000 viewers
    CNBC – 134,000 viewers
    HLN –90,000 viewers

More ratings, where FNC wins across the board here

If you’re liberal, you can’t see the liberal slant everywhere else, but Fox is so un-liberal that it shocks the shit straight of those who’ve never heard an opinion that doesn’t match theirs on TV before.

Clearly FNC is doing something right. They routinely and handily beat CNN and MSNBC combined.

  13. “Not saying that there isn’t climate change, but this Socialist movement is completely out of hand.”

I love how anyone who wants to hide their head in the sand over important social issues just tries to associate anything they don’t want to hear with either socialism or fascism.

  14. The overwhelming consensus from more than 90 percent of scientist is that global warming is real and is caused by humans.

    Science isn’t about a consensus.

Wow!!! You lose your common sense when you get educated! That’s the worse excuse for illiteracy!

You obviously didn’t have enough sense to see the smiley at the end of my sentence. It was a joke. I gave the real reason in the next sentences.

here is NO dogma in Science – ALL theories are provisional. All prevailing theories are only held up by the community by consensus because they all try to keep testing or disproving it. As soon as the theory fails a fundamental test, a true scientist is more than happy to abandon it.

Please explain this to Al Gore and the scientists at the UN. They are not interested in disproving man-made global warming.

C’mon Man!!!! THINK for yourself! And THINK critically!

I do. That is why I haven’t bought in to the hysteria.

  15. And what are the credentials of these dissenting scientists? Are they all with the Discovery Institute or funded by Big Oil?

What are the credentials of those in the consensus? Are they all in with the scare mongers like Gore?

I want to know what is really going on with the climate. I just happen to think the debate is far from over.
