Apple today released Keyboard Software Update 1.2 which allows users to take advantage of the new aluminum Apple Keyboard’s special features.
System Requirement:
• Mac OS X 10.4.10 or later
Keyboard Software Update 1.2 is available via Software Update and also as a standalone installer.
More info and download link (35.3MB) here.
What does this do that is different to the current software?
Made my keyboards snappier!
35 freakin’ Megs for a KEYBOARD script!
What the hell?
No wonder any computer with less than 1 gig of RAM suffers. Maybe the days of computers limited to 64 or 128 Kb aren’t so bad. The apps still did what we wanted, but in a MUCH smaller footprint.
Finally!
I LOVE being able to control iTunes play/pause/skip/rewind from the keyboard no matter what program I’m using when I press the buttons.
Cool. I rebooted and suddenly there’s a new key called Snappier.
I must try it on everything. Screw the Easy Button.
Not showing up on my Software Update.
“Cool. I rebooted and suddenly there’s a new key called Snappier.”
WTH! I installed the update, but I still don’t have that key.
This is Class Action worthy.I’m gonna sue.Who’s with me?
toilet now automatically flushes when pressing CONTROL+2+EJECT
I bought one a few weeks ago and hooked it up to my Mac Pro.
1. Expose keys did not function
2. Plugging the iPhone into the keyboard gave the error of power too low. Either side same error…
I had to return it. 🙁
I then read that the features worked for the Aluminum iMacs only. (now why the eff would this be so?)
In any case, can anyone confirm these two things have been fixed?
I wouldn’t call it “more infor”. When it comes to these updates Apple’s really saving in on the explanations to why one should download them:
“Install this software to take advantage of your aluminum Apple Keyboard’s special features.”
Yea right, thats “all” the info I need *rolleyes*
@M.A.D.
Did you download the first software update for the keyboard? because if ya didn’t, the new functions won’t work. i haven’t tried either of the side usb ports yet, haven’t had a reason to, but everything else (save for the brightness keys, which have no function on anything other than the iMac) work just fine.
This fixes a lot of things that didn’t work on older Macs.
@Crabs – the brightness keys also work on older Macs and Apple Cinema displays. Mine is an original Dual 2 GHz G5 and Apple 23″ ADC Cinema display and now everything works like it should.
Finally, the Expose and Dashboard keys are working.
Now whenever I type snappier I get a fanfare parading through my house!
It just did it then, when I typed snappier. Oops! Here they come again!
This is brilliant! Thanks !
snappier (one more for luck)
Finally, they corrected the foreign language bug. For example, my keyboard is french mapped and my OS X is set in french either. Well, in this context, the Keyboard Shortcuts Preferences tab was disable. The only workaround was to login in english to make some keyboard shortcuts.
Now everything works as it should.
Unfortunately, I had to uninstall this update – my machine became waaaaay to snappy and I couldn’t keep up.
Crabs,
Yeah, when I plugged the keyboard in, it prompted me to download the software. A couple of weeks ago expose and USB low power was a well known issue on many forums.
I wonder if this new patch fixed it.
now if only they can find a way to fix the action on the keys – for a speed typist it is way too bouncy. The chiclet keys just dont cut it for me – not sure if I will get used to it or swap the keyboard with the one on the server…
>35 freakin’ Megs for a KEYBOARD script!
>What the hell?
It’s not 35MB for a “keyboard script”. If you look inside the installer at the packages, you’ll see that a whole variety of system files are updated. It’s not that you need 35MB of executable to drive a keyboard, it just that the sum total size of all the system files affected comes to 35MB. The actual amount of keyboard specific code is probably only a few kB.
@M.A.D.
“bought one a few weeks ago and hooked it up to my Mac Pro. … I had to return it.“
1. Expose keys did not function / 2. Plugging the iPhone into the keyboard gave the error of power too low. Either side same error…
You need to 1) read the instructions that accompany the keyboard, and 2) read the instructions that accompany the keyboard.
One of the System REQUIREMENTS is “Keyboard Software Update” (see http://www.apple.com/keyboard). Furthermore, the instructions would have told you that the keyboard USB ports supply USB 2 SPEED, not HIGH POWER for devices such as iPhone or iPod or many thumb drives, etc.
Sorry to be so grumpy tonight, but come on, this is not 5th grade and there is no mommy to hold your hand. In fact, this new keyboard is simply the best Apple keyboard I have ever used, and playing with some of the features like Option-F keys is quite refreshing.
MDN: control. As in, I have none tonight
@M.A.D. again
“I then read that the features worked for the Aluminum iMacs only. (now why the eff would this be so?)”
And you seriously believe that cr@p?
PS. I’ve got a bridge I can sell you.
(MDN:) really
I bought a 24″ iMac two weeks ago. I’ve used every feature on the keyboard, as far as I know, and they’ve all been working fine. Expose, Dashboard, screen brightness, iTunes controls, powered USB ports. Maybe this update is only for those using the keyboard with older hardware?
Anyway, I clicked the install update buttons this morning before I left for work, but didn’t have a chance to see what, if anything, it changed.
@ drmacnut
I like your grumpy mood. It’s funny in the morning.
I DID install the original software update. Expose continued not to work. I’m hearing now that yesterday’s software finally fixes this.
Now about the USB, you’re right about it not being POWERED but check this out from Apple’s site –
“*Devices that draw high power from the USB connection, such as iPods, hard drives and some flash drives, can only be used with the new keyboard when it is attached to the aluminum iMac.”
And Apple added this to the marketing page a few days AFTER release of they keyboard. I had already bought mine by then.
Apple backtracked a little there when the original marketing page said plainly it would support high power without regard which model would work. I’m still confused on why the new iMacs have it work and not a Mac Pro.
Please reread my 2 posts for comprehension.
Do I need to download the keyboard update 1.2, I’m like Tergenev, I just got a 24″ iMac, and The F Keys seem to work fine.
