Ambrosia releases iToner: custom ringtones for Apple iPhone

Ambrosia Software has released iToner which enables you to quickly transfer custom ringtones for your iPhone – without modifying, hacking or having to reset your iPhone.

Simply drag and drop your MP3 or AAC audio files on iToner’s window, click the Sync button, and you’re done!

Even better, your ringtones will continue to work with future iPhone OS updates.

Your iPhone allows you to assign different ringtones for your different contacts. With iToner, now you can have a Barry White ringtone for when your girlfriend calls, Frank Zappa for when your college buddies ring you up, or the theme from Jaws for when your boss is calling.

iToner 1.0 costs US$15 and features a free fully-functional trial works for 30-days.

Tested – works like a charm. Wonder if this works with stuff from Universal Music Group? wink

  1. Nice, but you still have to make the ringtone first, or at least, that is the way it appears at their site. Doesn’t appear to offer any “editing” capabilities. If the reports are correct that Apple will next week begin offering a ringtone service that includes track editing–even at a price–I think Ambrosia will have a tough time with this one. Sure, some folks who refuse to pay an extra cent [well, past the $15 Ambroasia wants], will take the time to edit their songs and create the ringtones and then let this do the syncing for them.

  2. It is the smoothest iPhone solution outside of iTunes (meaning iFunTastic, JailBrake, etc. are not.)

I edited just the portions of the songs I wanted using QuickTime Pro – Audacity, or other shareware audio apps should work as well for non-DRM’d songs.

  3. Or a Barry White ringtone for when your boss is calling to set the mood for you to ask for that raise, Frank Zappa for when your girlfriend calls to remind her that Valley Girls are annoying so please STFU for once and the theme from Jaws for when your friends call to remind them it’s time for a night of heavy drinking and who has the best scar stories.

  4. agreed…i like Ambrosia, and i’m happy to support them. this app looks slick, and it works without a warranty-breaking hack. besides, Apple’s upcoming solution may only work with iTS tracks, not any old MP3 you may have….

  5. I just purchased this software, it works great!! I was able to quickly and easily make transfer ringtones of from both my imported cd’s and the songs I purchased from the Itunes store.

The best feature is that it recognizes playlists, so I just created a new play list called Iphone and it quickly synced the songs to my Iphone….very nice!

  6. Doesn’t launch on my G4 Mac Mini… The icon bounces twice in the dock then nothing.

Very disappointing, especially from a firm like Ambrosia whom I very highly respect. Hopefully there is a simple fix.

  7. Works great, I’ll play around with the trial version and then decide if I want to fork over the $15 for the real thing. I’d like to see Apple bring ringtones to the table next week and what they’ll be pricing it at. I think any song purchased through iTunes should be ringtone compatible for free. This would increase iTunes sales in the future for sure, otherwise you might aswell pay $15 upfront for iToner and then use it forever.

  8. With iFuntastic I can put custom ringtones on my iPhone for free, not to mention replacing any graphic including the AT+T logo, and rearrange the icons on the dock and springboard. I’ve got better things to do with my money than throw it away on iToner.

  9. @ Reality Check

This solution doesn’t send your phone into recovery when there is an update to the iphone like any jailbreak app (ifuntastic, etc) so you don’t have to restore your phone.

I like that. However, I get the feeling Apple will either add this functionality to itunes soon, or squash it in a future update.

Guess I’ll play with it for 30 days in the meantime.

  10. An Update: iToner still refuses to “stay running” on my G4 Mac Mini (1.5 GHz, 1gb RAM, 10.4.10) but runs flawlessly on my G5 Quad Tower. VERY Weird. I have moved over some ringtones, but I’m perplexed why it doesn’t run on my G4, perhaps there is a CPU dependency.

Just thought I would post an update: It works, sometimes!

  11. you don’t have to go outside of iTunes to make a ringtone with a non-drm’d song. you can choose the start and stop times of the song then make sure you have your importing options setup to just a basic quality for a phone like 80kbps mono. then just right click on the song and choose “convert to mp3”

Viola you have a customized ringtone

  12. @ XLM:

    Here’s the crash log:

    PID: 805
    Thread: Unknown

    Link (dyld) error:

    Library not loaded: /System/Library/PrivateFrameworks/MobileDevice.framework/Versions/A/MobileDevice
    Referenced from: /Users/gaming/Desktop/iToner.app/Contents/MacOS/iToner
    Reason: image not found

Not sure how I fix this… It exhibits the same behaviour on this machine regarless of user account. Doesn’t seem to be a User Directory problem.

This sort of thing is one of the reasons why I am less than enamoured of the Unix underpinnings of OS X… If something goes south you need to be a UNIX guru to figure out how to fix the problem.

    FRUSTRATED,

  13. Hano,

No reason to be frustrated… go to our support forums for help with iToner:

    http://www.AmbrosiaSW.com/support/

In any event, the reason it isn’t working on your G4 MacMini is that you don’t have the proper framework installed. Run your system updates, make sure you have the latest iTunes installed, and it’ll work fine on your Mac Mini.

  14. @Andrew Welch,

Great software, but I’m having problems. I opened a large mp3 file in QT player, cut out a 30 second segment to drag into iToner, it doesn’t take the file. Any ideas? (I read your support page too…)
