NeoOffice 2.2.1 released

NeoOffice 2.2.1 now available and includes support for the Mac OS X Spellchecker and Address Book and experimental support for Office 2007 Excel and PowerPoint files.

NeoOffice is a full-featured set of office applications (including word processing, spreadsheet, presentation, and drawing programs) for Mac OS X. Based on the OpenOffice.org office suite, NeoOffice has integrated dozens of native Mac features and can import, edit, and exchange files with other popular office programs such as Microsoft Office.

Released as free, open source software under the GNU General Public License (GPL), NeoOffice is fully functional and stable enough for everyday use. The software is actively developed, so improvements and small updates are made available on a regular basis.

  1. I paid the $25 last month to download an advance copy of this version of NeoOffice and have been generally pleased with performance. This is a real alternative to MS Office:Mac, altho you need to adapt yourself to the all-in-one approach to the application (not a big deal). I am also impressed that it has database and drawing modules; the former would be more impressive if it could open an Access db, but its inclusion is still welcome.

Now, if only somebody would create a strong alternative to Entourage — sadly, Apple’s corresponding three apps are weak by comparison. Ideally, the competitive app would import Entourage contacts and calendar, and actively sync with iCal and Address Book for iPhone compatibility.

  2. NeoOffice is better than a bread, butter, peanut butter, jelly, mustard and syrup sandwich!

That answers explains many questions and opens up many, many more.

  4. About the only thing I don’t like about NeoOffice (and Open Office in particular), and what keeps me from using it more, is that it loads all the program modules at startup (as mentioned by Ralph M).

I don’t know if it loads everything into memory even if you never use it, but why can’t they make discrete applications like MS Office’s Word, Excel, etc? Is it a workaround to some Java limitation?

MW: “seems” like a waste of resources

Doh! You’re right–I think she’s as cute as Valerie was though (good old teenage crushes). Rm222 was probably a couple years before her time.

Where’s the Apple invitation to a supposed Sept 5 event. Come on bloggers, I wanna see it!!! Here’s what I want to see:

    1. Announcement of an Apple Enterprise Division (maybe headed by Henri Richard, conveniently timed ex-AMD??).

    2. Apple teaming with Sprint to use it’s nation-wide WiMax network. Airport Extreme and Apple TV get WiMax radios. Maybe put a tower on every Apple Store to cover a ten mile radius ” width=”19″ height=”19″ alt=”smile” style=”border:0;” />. Apple becomes a wireless ISP and content provider. Enhances dot-Mac, pay bill via iTunes.

    3. OK, iPod thingies of course.

    4. Ultra-compact MacBook. 10-inch screen, .50 to .75-inch thick, SSdisk, folds to 5.5 x 9-inches, cost about $1000-$1200, 8-hour battery life.

    A guy can dream can’t he….
