Apple triggering iPhone updates via EDGE?

“Earlier today, a fascinating thing happened. iPhone owners across the country gained a new function without applying any software or firmware updates. The function in question is ‘Send to Web Gallery,’ a button that appears in the Camera and Photos applications when clicking the share button (lower left corner when viewing a photo), and did not exist for any iPhone owner (that we know of) prior to today. The button links with new .Mac iPhone integration functionality that allows photos to be sent directly from the iPhone to the new ‘Web Gallery’ function,” iPhone Atlas reports.

Triggered via EDGE? A timed addition that came along hidden within iPhone Update 1.0.1?

More in the full article here.

MacDailyNews Note: We can confirm that we have the “Send to Web Gallery” button now on our iPhones without applying any updates since iPhone Update 1.0.1 on July 31st.

  1. Ok, this is getting fun. Josh, gotta hand it to him, is being really helpful but has never heard of this feature for the iPhone and neither has his supervisor. He asked me…

“are you sure this is a feature for the iPhone.” My response…

“well, Steve Jobs announced it yesterday in his meeting on the Apple Campus in Cupertino, it’s on the Apple website in video if you would like to confirm it.”

    Long pause…….

Then he asked me for the url addy to check it out himself.
Took my info, is going to call me back with an answer when he talkes to a “specialist.”

Very nice kid, totally caught off guard with this issue. Seems like there wasn’t a whole lot of preparation for the support folks with this product roll out.

  2. Josh called back in 15 mins, not bad. Here’s their fix.

Reset, if that doesn’t work (it didn’t), Restore the iPhone software in iTunes (doing that now), if this doesn’t work, delete the iTunes application and download it from Apple and reinstall. If this doesn’t work then call Apple support back.

Hmmmmmm….. why do I think that they have no idea what’s going on?

  3. ok. Reseting the iPhone doesn’t enable this feature. Restoring the iPhone (very scary BTW when the iPhone temporarily says it needs to be activated again, then finds the previous activation in a back up file) doesn’t enable this feature. Finally deleting iTunes and reinstalling iTunes doesn’t enable this feature.

Calling Josh @ apple support back, should be fun. Wish me luck!

  4. ok – here’s the fix for those of use who it’s not working for.

First – restore the iPhone to factory settings in iTunes. Once the restore is done reinstalling your software, it’s going to ask you to either use a “back up” of your settings, or use a fresh start so to speak. You don’t want to use the back up of your phone settings.

Once the iPhone is restored (not reset) you enable .Mac in the settings app on the iphone. Select settings, choose Mail, and add your .Mac email to it. Once you’ve done this, use iLife 08 and upload a set of photo’s to Web Gallery. Once a web gallery has been established on .Mac you can then utilize this feature on your iPhone.

    whew…. I’m gonna go take a nap.

  5. I have no clue… so don’t kick me

But yes, imagine a new function or button ever month appearing…
    ahhhhhh

suddenly so so many menu buttons I can’t find that one particular send button… ahhhhhhh

    YES – I love iPhone

    But to have functionality appear without me accepting it;
good point who ever said it… it COULD be an intrusion!!!!!!

  6. It was most definitely a timed release, built in either originally under 1.0 or added via 1.0.1. I had the new button as of Tuesday afternoon already, shortly after the media event.

    Oohhhh, they’re goood. ” width=”19″ height=”19″ alt=”smile” style=”border:0;” /> And continuously getting better and sneakier.

  7. Of course, if anyone actually watched the Stevenote from Tuesday, starting during the 30th minute, you’d hear Steve talk about the iPhone and web galleries… although he doesn’t say how it got into the iPhone (perhaps it was always there, waiting for iPhoto 08 and the .mac update?)

  8. Didn’t have this feature until I installed iLife ’08 and set the .Mac prefs to have my username/pass in system prefs. I did NOT have to do a web gallery to get it. I got the you need to enable mobile devices when I tried to send a pic. Then I made a web gallery and and allowed uploading. It works very nice btw ” width=”19″ height=”19″ alt=”wink” style=”border:0;” />

PS I’m still getting server maintainence errors because some stuff uses macdailynews.com and not http://www.macdailynews.com like your captchas…..

  9. I finally got the button this a.m.
Can I create a web gallery without iLife ’08? When I hit the button on my iPhone, it says that my .Mac account is not configured for posting from a mobile device. As a .Mac user, how do I enable this without iPhoto ’08 (confusingly called iPhoto 7.0.1).
