Germans clamor for Apple iPhone

“Germany’s biggest Apple retailer is getting 1,000 enquiries every day about buying the new iPhone, which is expected to go on sale towards the end of the year, the retailer’s head told a newspaper,” Reuters reports.

“‘Fifty-seven thousand interested people have already registered with us,’ the head of retailer Gravis, Archibald Horlitz, told Germany’s Tagesspiegel in comments due to be published on Friday. ‘Every day, we get about 1,000 more,'” Reuters reports.

“Horlitz said almost 58 percent of those interested in buying the much-hyped iPhone… said they would consider switching operators if necessary,” Reuters reports. “Horlitz said he expected Gravis would also be allowed to sell the iPhone in its 29 German branches. ‘I assume that we’ll be part of it,’ he said.”

  1. So goes Germany, so goes Europe, so goes the world.

Achtung, es ist ein EiFone gelandet! Nicht schießen! Möchtest Du einen Kaffee während ich deine EiFone überprüfe?

Does Germany still charge that ridiculous tax for every radio you have in your house? (They used to have special trucks that drove through the neighborhood and identified radio users!) And are you allowed hook up a fax machine without registering with the Telefon Gestapo? How do they regulate WiFi, I wonder?

Don’t get me wrong, I love Germany, they just tend to regulate everything out the wazoo. (And then they wonder why innovation and entrepreneurship is so low.)

  2. Synthmeister,

    at least Germany has 3G everywhere ” width=”19″ height=”19″ alt=”wink” style=”border:0;” />

And the cars are better. (Ilive right down the street from the headquarters of Daimler AG)

  3. I can’t speak for all german people, but…

What the chicken is an iPhone? We don’t even have constant hot water or electricity in every household. I’ve heard, that someone in the US invented baked bread. Is this true?

    ” width=”19″ height=”19″ alt=”wink” style=”border:0;” />

Best regards from Germany. Maybe one day, we’ll have internet.

  4. Does Germany still charge that ridiculous tax for every radio you have in your house?

No, the broadcasting license is owed if you own at least one radio or TV set. It pays for the public broadcasting networks which are much more reliable and informative in news reporting than german or US commercial ones which are about on par.

And are you allowed hook up a fax machine without registering with the Telefon Gestapo?

Those days are long gone… hook up whatever you like as long as it doesn’t fry the network. In the bad old days the state-run predecessor of T-Com had lots of restrictions. But those are history nowadays.

  5. 35 million people in a country the size of Oregon and still no Apple stores?

    About eighty million, in fact. Which further underscores the point…! ” width=”19″ height=”19″ alt=”wink” style=”border:0;” />

  6. we here in germany like the iApps and all that crazy iStuff from our deliverers from across the ocean! we only need an iVolksempfänger and an iV-2 schneider to be 100% happy!!! any idea if there are plans for that at apple (computers)?

  7. I am amazed how many MDN readers understand German more or less. Makes watching Scrubs so much more fun if you understand Elliot.

The fscking broadcasting licence also exists in the UK. And even though fax machines don’t need to be registered anymore, the licence now applies to everyone without a tv set or radio but a computer with internet access.

    And we don’t pronounce the “i” like Americans “a” but rather like a short “ee” or a “y” like teeny weeny -> tini wini ” width=”19″ height=”19″ alt=”smile” style=”border:0;” />

  8. hello American heroes,
we Germans need your assistance. Nevertheless please send your army by and help us against be afraidable steer fight. Frees us of the weapon of mass destruction and help us out of this stone time of terror . Angela Merkel is an rude dictator and technical development does not exist in our poor country. We have big problemes, cause there is no correct “i” in our language. Apple will not give us i-products, untill we learn it correctly.
Thanks for your prejudices. But you are the rulers of the world anyway.

    Greetings,
    macuser from Germany

I am quite certain that the actress who plays Elliot must have had a fair amount of German language experience, because her fluidity and intonation are at level that just having a language/accent coach on the set could likely never attain. That’s a lot harder to fake than pronunciation.

  10. Hi folks,

granted, we in Germany are missing mostly everything you got in your great country. Firearms for everyone, A-Bombs, Fastfood, excellent schools.. And even more..

We’d surely appreciate if we had such a smart president as you have:

    *g*

Take care and if you still worry about the weapons in Iraq: Just ask Mr. Rumsfeld. He should have the vouchers for the delivered weapons somewhere in his desk. *g*

  11. Another German Guy:

Don’t fall into the trap set by ignorant trolls writing that crap about Germany. They are just trying to stir up some trouble and create bad feelings.

    As to your list:

–Only about a quarter of American adults owns a firearm (1)
–No one I’ve ever met has owned or even seen an A-bomb.
–Fast Food? Lots of that in Germany, thank goodness! Love having a beer with my Big Mac!
–There are excellent schools in both countries, no need to give that one to the Amis.

And, finally, there is enough legitimate stuff to pick on GWB about, there is no need to make things up, as someone did with that photo you linked to. That hoax is disproved at this page:
