Blackfriars’ predicts 500,000 iPhone sales in first weekend; 1 million possible

“Some analysts claimed that the iPhone launch would be a failure if Apple failed to sell 100,000 iPhones during the first weekend. Based upon the limited data we have, we believe that number was exceeded in just the first two to three hours. Blackfriars’ prediction is that Apple will sell 500,000 iPhones this weekend, and based upon limited sales rates reported, that number now looks quite achievable,” Carl Howe writes for Blackfriars’ Marketing.

“The only question is whether the demand and iPhone supply is great enough that they might push past the million unit mark this weekend,” Howe writes.

  1. No way in hell they will sell 3 million phones in one weekend..

As mentioned above 1800 AT&T stores which each got Appx 50 phones = 90,000 phones

180 Apple stores got appx 1000 phones = 180,000 phones and most Apple stores are not even sold out..

Do the math, that is about 250,000 phones, 270,000 at the VERY BEST.

Also remember, not all AT&T locations got the iPhone as they were supposed to.

  2. Time magazine has a great review of the phone. Listen to the last paragraph or so…

“…The Palm and the Treo, et al., were merely harbingers of the era of true walk-around mobile computing that Jobs has just inaugurated. Hail to the chief.
Apple and its partners are just beginning to figure out how to develop for this thing. Look at the iPods of five years ago. That monochrome interface! That klunky moving touchwheel! They look like something a caveman whittled out of a piece of flint using another piece of flint. Now imagine something that’s going to make the iPhone look like that. You’ll have one in a few years, and it’ll be cheaper, too. If you’re not ready to think different, then think ahead.”

“1 million may be a stretch based on how many Apple could make, but certainly that number will be achieved as fast as Apple made or makes 1 million”

I’m sure I remember reading a quote from Steve that they had already manufactured3 million iPhones, that they ahd shiped 1 million to the stores and were ready to follow up very quickly.

If there are no iPhones in stores Apple or ATT it’s becuase they underestimated the local demand but I’m sure they can fill that pretty quickly.

It would be amazing if the supassed the 1 million mark before the end of the weekend. It will be a great holiday for lots of people!

  4. Update:
My Safari problems have ceased with a reset: Hold Home+Sleep for 8 seconds. No problems since! I’m typing this in my yard & listening to ELO with no issues. Buy AAPL! ” width=”19″ height=”19″ alt=”smile” style=”border:0;” />

  5. Imagine if they sold out of the three million that were manufactured & delivered! the carnage that would ensue from people bidding the price up would be too embarassing for AAPL..

It would also mean that any future deliveries would be hampered by an impossible demand, damn…I just had a thought…. That would delay the global launch of the iphone as stocks would sucked up well in advance!!!! Grrrrrrr!

Note to self….Stop that rubbish you fool, psyching yourself over nothing!

  6. It doesn’t make any difference whether the market was closed when they started the sales. The market is not going to collapse if there are glitches. It won’t even have an affect.

The stock market is not predictable in such a simplistic way as your are thinking.

  7. It’s a success. I just hopped over to my Apple Store and it was packed. People were certainly playing with iPhones and I saw a few bought (there for less than 10 minutes).

This is the start of a long term course for Apple. In time, this amazing product is only going to become better.

  8. In his interview with the WSJ, Steve Jobs declined to say how many iPhones had been manufactured so far. If he declines to tell the WSJ, I’m guessing he hasn’t made any official statement about how many iPhones have been manufactured. Let’s not let our imaginations run wild this weekend so that anything short of an unrealistic sales figure is seen as a disaapointment. 250,000 this weekend would be great, and sounds about right to me. The Apple store in my area is sold out of the 8 gb, but still has plenty of the 4 gb.

  9. You are also missing the point that all of the AT&T stores are taking orders and drop-shipping the phone to your house or back to the store so you can come pick it up. I ordered an 8gig, and while in the store 6 other people were placing orders while I was. They sold out of their stock yesterday, and placed over 250 orders after the stock ran out, and that was just last night. They had not figured out how many orders they had taken today so far (I was there at 2pm central time.). So if you are only basing sales this weekend on actual IN stock iPhones then yeah, might only be 250k, but if you add up all of the orders places at AT&T stores for ones to be shipped, along with what were ordered on the Apple Online store its going to be HUGE.

    Magic word: Why…

Why oh why did they not release this before ” width=”19″ height=”19″ alt=”wink” style=”border:0;” />

  10. You morons! Apple sold one billion trillion kazillion iPhones. Apple could sell 150,000 iPhones to every man, woman, and child on planet Earth. Don’t you get! That’s why the network failed – the whole frikkin’ world was logged on iTunes simultaneously.
