Apple Store employees have installed new window displays in all windows (one or two, depending upon the store) for the debut of the iPhone on June 29th.
ifoAppleStore reports, “The display consisted of an oversized iPhone model with a working display, constructed of plastic and an LCD TV screen, powered by a [Mac Pro] computer. The model is suspended in front of a white background, with a black Apple logo and word ‘iPhone,’ along with ‘Coming June 29th.'”
“The iPhone model is suspended in the window by cables, and mimics an actual iPhone operation. The video display is provided by an LCD TV within the plastic shell. Power and video connections run from the bottom of the model,” ifoAppleStore reports. “The power cable is routed directly down into an AC outlet at the bottom of the display window. The DVI video cable is routed to the side wall, and then to a [Mac Pro] desktop dedicated to generate the video being displayed on the model.”

imagine getting one of those in-store displays off eBay in about 10 years. ” width=”19″ height=”19″ alt=”wink” style=”border:0;” />
I just came from the Apple Store. I can confirm 2 are displayed at the Salt Lake City Apple Store.
These have been displayed since Friday at most if not all Apple Stores.
I heard that the one London’s store window is reserved for Dom Joly of “Trigger Happy TV.”
“HELLO!!!!!?”
imagine a beowulf cluster of these!!!
Isn’t this hype getting a bit much? I mean, do people really care that stores have new window displays? That is worthy of a story?
An Apple employee told me the LCDs in the iPhone displays are 30″ Cinema Displays turned vertically!
Wow, now that’s an outlay of cash and time to build those guys and make them work like iPhones. Got to hand it to Apple: when they decide to go all out, they certainly do it in style!
OK first off I tend to agree this may not actually be news.
However they have been up at Bellevue Washington since at lest this last Sat.
I so need a hobby….
Very cool. It’s not your typical window display, so I’d say it’s “news.” If you turn it sideways, does the orientation change?
Ronin: “That is worthy of a story?”
Got you to click on the link.
Sucker.
Looks like a rip-off of a M$ Table thingy, just stood up… ” width=”19″ height=”19″ alt=”smile” style=”border:0;” />

I will tell you why this display is SO important.
The display mimics the exact functionality of an actual iphone but on a massive scale.
Imagine walking past this display and you see a massive visual of cover flow in progress!
This display is gonna help educate potential new iphone buyers/users too and help sell shit loads of iphones too!
@ Ronin.
Actually, I found it an interesting disquisition on presentation.
Owing to the latest, albeit temporarily-phased and transitional advertising solutions to be promoted laterally and thus deconstructed, future designed techniques to enhance and engage the public medium in order to promote sales or attendance through the cognitive use of structure, form, logic and planning through design of display branches and sub-branches.
New systems are rapidly – Nah, sorry, I can’t go on, you are right, this is a bullshit story.
MDN get a grip, you might be drinking too much kool aid and under the influence.
Why Apple keeps displaying the New York Times web site is really stupid…. it is such a dumb rag,… some of the worst journalism today!
This gives Apple a bad name!
Seen them in Indy. Most effective, way cool. I agree, these could be worth a fortune someday (especially if the iPhone completely overturns the phone industry). And because it’s just an LCD (or plasma?) display running a simple program, the thing could be mounted on a wall or above your desk (landscape mode, anyways) and used as a TV or computer monitor.
And curiously, it’s better looking than most of those.
Saw one last night at the Apple Store at Southdale Center in Edina, MN. AT&T has a large walk-in store there plus a brand new “Fort AT&T” style kiosk in front of the Apple Store. Buy the iPhone and walk 20 feet to activate it. Good thinking.
Looks good!
I agree that continually displaying the NYT is not a great move. The whole patina of the Times has long since been rubbed away by articles masquerading as editorials. And their tagline seems abrasively anachronistic — who are they to determine what’s fit to print and not? Please. I do not need some hoity-toity Manhattan liberal determining what is best for me to read.
BTSOI,
I wouldn’t watch the 20-minute video in any detail if I were you.
But I’m not, which is probably a relief for both of us.
