  1. There’s a training manual (?!) that includes how to overcome objections (wtf?!!??) …as if AT&T is going to have a hard time selling this thing, or that 99% of the initial customers haven’t watched Jobs keynote like 5 times already!

  2. confuzed1,

lol – yes you did 😀

    sorry, i didn’t see it when i commented b/c i hadn’t refreshed the page – oh well.

I agree with you, and don’t think not having the actual iChat from OS X is a big deal.

  3. Basty:
    I did not say Nike + had GPS;
i was giving an example of how you enhance the ipod feature.
Similarly with a tiny module at the bottom you could ad a GPS plug-in to work withnthe map application on the Iphone

  4. They could have just said: “READ apple.com for iphone info”

We need Gmail app, as well as IM support, im fine with GPS support as an accessory.

How about the AT&T Plan costs and features??? I dont want to camp out just to find out its gonna cost me 120 a month for data

  5. Really? No IM?? I’d think iChat on the iPhone would be a killer app for it. That’s truly disappointing if true

Uh, considering Steve showed us iChat IM’s during the last keynote, yea that would be annoying.

We already know about free software upgrades for the first two years thou…

  6. Mike-

Steve never demoed iChat IM’s. He demoed SMS. SMS conversation are threaded (like Palm does it, which is definitely a good thing). The threaded conversations look just like iChat.

  7. IM to phone only works in the USA.

and, even in the USA it’s not free.

    so it’s important.

but, iChat is also VOIP, and video, so it’s really a big deal.

it’s really too bad that the real price of this phone is $999, and that Apple had to make the deal with AT&T

  8. DogGone:Again good software may improve performance. For the first time, the first adopters may not lose out with next generation products sine Apple will be enhancing the units as time goes on.

Software can’t fix everything. Apple will obviously be releasing iPhones with bigger harddrives and everyone who was so excited about the advantages of software will have filled their 8 gigs and are going to be wishing they waited. Just my thoughts.

  9. No iChat? Big surprise! AT&T is going to charge you for each SMS Instant Message, then why would they allow iChat? It’s never going to happen. Now there might be some kind of hack come out some day (and now you know why Steve didn’t want independent iPhone development). That’s why you won’t see Skype on the iPhone too.

  10. “What is the big deal with GPS. I never lost enough to need GPS”

Perhaps in the small Midwestern town you live in you can always find your position easily. I guess you never intend to travel at all, so you’re probably right. you don’t need it.

“Media Net, MobiTV, or Cellular Video are not available on iPhone.”

With no 3G capability lack of the modern streaming media features should have been fully anticipated by everybody.

  11. But who cares what the iPhone does not have. It is what it DOES have that is going to make it sell. It will be hot.

I won’t buy one because I have no use for a cell phone but most people do, or at least they think they do, and most people (particularly young folks) simply must have the coolest fad going. It will sell and it will sell in a big way.

I don’t want one but it (AAPL) is still making me fairly well to do as it is. Hey, we need something to be able to add to future updated versions in order to keep folks buying a new iPhone every year or so, and keep AAPL climbing.

  12. I can only imagine that this ‘manual’ is more a sales tool for AT&T Employees that will help them pre-sale the iPhone with more specifics on what most of us already know.

The end of the book reads:

“Keep in mind that there might be additional iPhone features that are announced at iPhone’s launch as well as additional information about the features in this guide.”

  13. FROM BUSINESSWEEK ARTICLE: AT&T’S NEW OPERATETOR: CEO Randall Stephenson talks about the challenges of getting the iPhone to market:

A ton of attention is focused on the iPhone launch. But most AT&T sales-people haven’t had a chance to really learn the phone. What will you do to make sure they know what they’re talking about?
[Laughs] There have only been five people in AT&T and maybe only five at Apple who have handled that phone in any extensive way. Look, getting a product ready in stores is something that we do [all the time]. There is nothing new here. It’s been a meticulously planned launch for the past two years. We’re prepared for people camping out in front of our stores.

What contribution will iPhone make to your growth?
I expect it to be significant. Steve Jobs has said he expects to sell 10 million through 2008. I hope he’s right. I hope he’s low! The iPhone will drive people to stores for the sale of all our other devices. Our objective is to own all aspects of [communications] in the home. The iPhone is critical to this.

  14. This will be fantastic, but I have yet to read anything about voice dialing, which I think is an important part of modern mobile phones. Perhaps this is one of those features that will come along later. I hope so.

  15. E: “We have another school of complainers at 300 yards, captain. Do you want me to fire the ennui torpedos?”

C: “Again? I thought those sea hags had better things to do!”

E: “Well they were beating up on the Origami, but now that it’s gone to meet Davy Jones, they need something else to do.”

    C: “Let her rip, ensign!”
