Apple today updated its MacBook Pro line of notebooks with the latest Intel Core 2 Duo processors, memory up to 4GB, and high-speed graphics in a lightweight, aluminum enclosure that is just one-inch thin. The new MacBook Pro is available in 15-inch models with a new mercury-free, power-efficient LED-backlit display and a 17-inch model with an optional high-resolution display. All models include a built-in iSight video camera for video conferencing on-the-go, Apple’s MagSafe Power Adapter that safely disconnects when under strain, and built-in 802.11n wireless networking for up to five times the performance and twice the range of 802.11g.
“With Intel Core 2 Duo performance, more memory and state-of-the-art graphics, this MacBook Pro is a portable powerhouse for creative and professional users,” said Philip Schiller, Apple’s senior vice president of Worldwide Product Marketing, in the press release. “Apple’s notebooks have always led the industry in innovation with features like built-in 802.11 and the MagSafe Power Adapter, and now the industry’s first 15-inch LED-backlit display is another step toward completely eliminating mercury from our displays.”
Every MacBook Pro model includes an Intel Core 2 Duo processor with 4MB of shared L2 cache, an 800 MHz frontside bus and 2GB 667 MHz DDR2 SDRAM memory, running professional applications like Final Cut Pro 6 and Logic Pro 7 more than 50 percent faster than the original MacBook Pro with Core Duo. Delivering more realistic graphics for animation and gaming, every MacBook Pro now includes the state-of-the art NVIDIA GeForce 8600M GT and is more than 50 percent faster than the original MacBook Pro with Core Duo.
The MacBook Pro’s lightweight, aluminum enclosure is just one-inch thin and is available in three models: 2.2 GHz and 2.4 GHz 15-inch MacBook Pro models, and a 2.4 GHz 17-inch MacBook Pro model. The new 15-inch MacBook Pro models feature a brand-new, power-efficient LED-backlit display and are the first of Apple’s notebooks to transition to LED backlighting as part of the company’s effort to eliminate the use of mercury in its products. The 17-inch model now offers a new optional 1920-by-1200 high-resolution display, providing over 30 percent more screen real estate than the standard 1680-by-1050 display.
Designed for mobile professionals, the MacBook Pro includes a built-in iSight video camera for video conferencing on-the-go, Apple’s MagSafe Power Adapter that magnetically connects the power cord to the MacBook Pro and safely disconnects when under strain, and the latest generation of 802.11n wireless networking for up to five times the performance and twice the range of 802.11g. Every new MacBook Pro also includes built-in 10/100/1000 BASE-T Gigabit Ethernet for high-speed networking, Bluetooth 2.0+EDR (Enhanced Data Rate), a FireWire 800 and a FireWire 400 port, a backlit illuminated keyboard, an ExpressCard/34 expansion card slot for expansion solutions such as 3G wireless networking, and a DVI video output to connect up to a 30-inch Apple Cinema HD Display.
The MacBook Pro comes with iLife ’06, the next generation of Apple’s award-winning suite of digital lifestyle applications featuring iPhoto, iMovie HD, iDVD, GarageBand and iWeb. The MacBook Pro also comes with the latest release of the world’s most advanced operating system, Mac OS X version 10.4.9 Tiger, including Safari, Mail, iCal, iChat AV, Front Row and Photo Booth.
The new MacBook Pro models are now shipping and will be available through the Apple Store, Apple’s retail stores and Apple Authorized Resellers.

Bye Bye ATI
Santa Frooza
no HDMI port !
Even DULL are planning on giving laptop connectivity to large Flat screens in HD.
This is just a spec refresh
Thinner and yummier.
Oh baby!
I’ve been waiting for some hot new iron to replace my old PowerBook G4 and here it is!
4GB of RAM! YESSSsssss!
About all it needs is one of them new 200GB x 7200 rpm hard drives?
Can’t wait to get back to the US of A and order me one!
LED??? Where does it say LED backlit?
I hate it when things are referred to as “1 inch thin”. What bull crap marketing-speak. Maybe i should tell the salestron at the clothing store that my waist is 48″ thin. Will do wonders for my self esteem. Won’t feel like an old fat fsck anymore
Found it. They really need to list it on their store page for the MBP. Gizmodo is reporting no LED.
@max
“spec refresh” Are you crazy? This is everything but the kitchen sink… LED, GPU, Santa Rosa, 4 Gig RAM, HD resolution, 250 Gig HD…
It’s an insane upgrade. Awesome!
MW:”arms” What are you up in arms about?
Get ready for some Dx10 gaming on the MBP….yeahhh!
When I add this 7200rpm drive, which is supposed to be an extra $150, the price does not change, just the ship time. The price changes for everything else that it’s supposed to change for. This is for both the 15″ and 17″ model. They need to fix that!
correction, the price updates on the lower-spec 15″, but not on the higher-spec 15″ or the 17″.
This is an awesome update. 2gigs ram! Soon, buying soon!
bruce,
yes, you really have to look hard to find LED mentioned. At first I thought MDN had made a mistake.
Why do Apple seem to think that it’s hardly worth mentioning?
Very strange.
Anyone know whether or not the new LCD’s are 8-bit panels?
I feel a trip to an Apple Store coming very, very soon…
My PowerBook has served me well, but this new ‘Book is fsckin awesome!!!
Hell…. no LED on the 17’er….
I’ve no real need for a mobile computer; but I’d really like one of these!
Found this a bit odd, keep 17in standard and click on different display models pricing:
Widescreen Display $2799
Glossy Widescreen $2649
High-Resolution Widescreen $2749
High-Resolution Glossy Widescreen $2749
A discount for going to hi-res? Sound good to be..but likely a error.
Hard to find reference to LED backlighting???
here is the quote from the product page
“Display’s the thing
A great video processor powers a great display. The new MacBook Pro is available in 15-inch models with a new mercury-free, power-efficient LED-backlit display and a 17-inch model with an optional 1920-by-1200 pixel display.”

Do u guyes know what this “chat now” button is all about next to on the right of the blue bar, top right, in the apple store, when u select the macbook pro and select one of the options? is it new? doesnt seem to work…
“Maybe i should tell the salestron at the clothing store that my waist is 48″ thin.”
That would be false advertising.
Am I the only one waiting for a case redesign for all the PRO models?
I understand that the look of the PRO models are 100% better than anything else out there but honestly it has become dated.
My MBP has just turned a pale shade of green. I really want one of these babies.
Just love Apple leading the way…!
yeah, it looks like only the 15″ has the LED backlight.
graphics details page states that the 15″ is “better for the environment”
Now native HD res available on the 17″ WooHoo
So, if this doesn’t warrant being mentioned at WWDC next week, then what does?
Something even better warrants being mentioned at WWDC, that’s what…

” width=”19″ height=”19″ alt=”wink” style=”border:0;” />
My bet is that Steve will intro the re-designed iMac at WWDC.
“So, if this doesn’t warrant being mentioned at WWDC next week, then what does?”
Clearly, the majority of the time will be spent on Leopard. This increases the probability there is some big stuff in Leopard to talk about.
We also know there is an AppleTV software upgrade coming next week. Maybe there is something for developers in this space. There is also the possibility of an iPhone/iPod OS X SDK.
Slim chance of major .Mac changes.
As for hardware, it increases the likelihood that the iMac will undergo a major facelift. Slim chance still of another Mac hardware product like a Macbook mini?
John – Leopard.
They’ll no doubt go over the features we know about in more detail plus talk about new stuff and do a recap of the company as a whole so it’s gonna be pretty long as it is.
S s l lo o o o owww This mor ninngg
Took 4 minutes for MDN to load. Every other site is as usual.
If you decide to sell your house, make sure the ad says it has bi-directional stairs.
Now all that has to happen is for Leopard to come out, and I’ll be buying one. I’m *really* tempted to get one now, but I can make myself wait a few more months to save the $129 for Leopard. Besides, that’s a few more months that the money in the bank that’s designated for the new laptop can earn some interest.
Besides, it doesn’t look like Amazon has the new models yet, and surprisingly enough, Amazon had the best pricing on the previous models once sales tax and shipping are factored in.
GET MATTE SCREEN INSTEAD OF GLOSSY, SAVE YOUR EYES!!![/B]
Sure glossy screens may look better and not hurt your eyes for the younger years because your not experienced, but later on you realize what a mistake you’ve made when your paying for contacts and glasses.
What’s up with glossy screens? Well scientists have shown that with glossy screens there is TWO IMAGES, the one your looking at and the reflective one. So your eyes automatically keep refocusing on the two images, creating eye strain which later causes eye problems not to mention the rubbing of your eyes, headaches and irratibility.
Sure you can TRY to pick optimal enviorments to prevent reflections in the screen, but a laptop is designed to be portable!
Eventually what will happen is you’ll just come to accept the design flaw and pay the penalty later on.
Matte screens were a lifesaver for us long term CRT users, matte screens are OVERWHELMINGLY PREFERED OVER GLOSSY
Despite blind fanboism altering the results, thinking that everything Apple does is right, the Matte screen poll results still seriously outnumber Glossy screens.
Perhaps we longterm users know something and wish to advise others not to do the same thing? Pick matte unless you absolutley need glossy. You’ll thank me later.
http://www.macpolls.com/?poll_id=527
I bet YoungMacMan OldFourEyesNow thinks the SeeClearly Method™ is valid as well.
‘ younger years because your not experienced, ‘
‘screens there is TWO IMAGES, ‘
‘the one your looking at’
‘optimal enviorments’
I give up!
I have been on a glossy screen for 2 years, and don’t often have a problem… they are already so much easier on the eyes than CRT, whats the fuss? I thought it was the radiation on the CRT?
My God. It’s full of stars…
They say LED displays are more power efficient. Any idea how much of an impact this will have on battery life?
i’ve read many people complain about the glossy screens. i love my MB’s glossy screen (compared to the previous ibook’s matte display), but then again, i use it indoors virtually all the time. interesting that there’s a choice with the new MBP’s, though.
Enough with the bold already.
Matte or glossy preferences are down to the user. If someone is concerned they should go and look at the models in person before buying.
The online store is having issues with the pricing. The base model was 1849 at one point. When I went to checkout the price corrected. Shame I almost bought one right there.
” width=”19″ height=”19″ alt=”wink” style=”border:0;” />
It has been mentioned on the rumor sites that only 15 inch or lower panels can be build with LED backlights. I bet once they become available in volume the 17 inch screens will be updated.
Nice to see the hi res 17 inch screen.
Santa Rosa is a big deal. A case redesign would be cool, but with everything going on it is not surprising that Apple are putting this on a lower priority.
Now I have to start saving. Maybe by the time Leopard comes out I can get a 15 incher. Boy won’t my wife be happy 😮
FIrewire 800 back!
4GB RAM and 160GB Drive is fantastic. I’ve got the original MBP Core Duo, and this new model addresses all the weaknesses of the original. I wonder about the heat. And one last thing: is this Core2Duo the Santa Rosa chip?
MacBook Pros are too expensive in an age where you can get something comparably equipped for half the price. It’s too out of reach for the average consumer.
Wow, the astroturfers are out in force.
Is it just me, or does the fact that every post from YoungMacMan forward is in bold print mean something is hosed up with MDN’s website?
iFlaki whining. There’s something new.
“MacBook Pros are too expensive in an age where you can get something comparably equipped for half the price. It’s too out of reach for the average consumer.”
THEN DO IT. AND STFU.
And mull over this, douchebag. “Average consumer.” MacBook PRO. Get it or was that too fast for you?
Spark: I wonder about the heat.
My 17″ Core 2 2.33GHz gets warm, but not hot.
iMaki: MacBook Pros are too expensive in an age where you can get something comparably equipped for half the price.
“Comparably equipped”? So far every single time anybody came up with this kind of claim they all failed to actually produce such a miracle machine!
iMaki: It’s too out of reach for the average consumer.
A MacBook Pro is a heavy-duty workhorse, not a leisure pony.
iMaki,
Do tell where I can purchase a 1″ thick, 17″ widescreen laptop (running OS X) for $1300, won’t you?
I’m calling your bluff.
</b>I’m with DogGone, enough of the BOLD already! One guy (thanks a lot, YoungMacMan OldFourEyesNow) screws up his typing, forgets where he is, whatever, and we are locked into Bold HELL … plus he doesn’t know the difference between LCD and CRT. Sheesh!

Yeh sure, why go to the expensive upmarket restaurant which is selling the rarest steak money can buy when McDonalds have a 2 for 1 offer on Big Macs?
Idiot.
</b> There. I fixed it.
I’m seriously considering a 15″ MacBook Pro to replace my aging G3 iBook…This might be enough to push me towards one now.
” width=”19″ height=”19″ alt=”smile” style=”border:0;” />
“starting at JUST $1999”
LOLZ!
Turn bold off</b>
i’ve read many people complain about the glossy screens. i love my MB’s glossy screen (compared to the previous ibook’s matte display), but then again, i use it indoors virtually all the time. interesting that there’s a choice with the new MBP’s, though.
You need to get the hell out of your parents basement, because in real world conditions, glossy sucks big time.
Apple is transitioning to all glossy displays on laptops because matte screens have a resolution/quality limit.
This issue of MBP’s might be the last or next last of Apple’s laptops to feature matte screens.
I almost bought a MB a week ago, but the glossy screens turned me off completely.
Now multiply the MacPoll Matte screen preference by all the potential MB buyers out there and Apple is LOSING 44% of potential MB sales by taking this mandatory glossy screen course of action with their product line.
I could understand if there was a few crybabies out there, but Matte screens are overwhelmingly prefered to glossy.
Apple should offer people a choice, not everyone needs high resolution with vibrant colors, rather choosing less eyestrain having to sit in front of a computer all day.
</b>
No?
<strong>
Maybe?
By upgrading to the high-resolution 1920×1200 pixel display, you’ll enjoy a workspace with 30% more pixels than the standard model, or as many pixels as the 23-inch Apple Cinema HD Display. You’ll have more space for palettes and windows, and you can watch 1080 HD video content at full resolution.
>
Apple should offer people a choice, not everyone needs high resolution with vibrant colors, rather choosing less eyestrain having to sit in front of a computer all day.>
They do.
THey should fix the headline to this story.
These are NOT the industry’s first LED backlit laptop displays.
APPLE WILL HAVE A HIGHER MARKET CAP THAN NOKIA IS LESS THAN 15 DAYS!!!

No, not necessarily…

What is amazing is that this was announced before the WWDC, they must have ALOT coming next week at the conference……..

The MDN news crew must have been collectively hit by a bus. I can’t remember such a slow news day.
Here follows a chat I just had online with an “Apple Expert” from Apple’s website when trying to research the LED displays. Clearly the expert doesn’t seem to be correctly informed or there are new specs on the Cinema Displays that no one is mentioning:
You are chatting with Tom, an Apple Expert
Hi, my name is Tom. Welcome to Apple!
Welcome to the Online Apple Store!
Just confirming that the 17″ displays, regardless of the HD res or not, do NOT have LED displays.
with new MBP
The LED is in the Apple Cinema displays not the computer displays.
Cinema Displays are now LED based? I didn’t get that from the MBP release.
Yes, only the 23″ and 30″ at this time.
So are you telling me there is no LED display for the 15″ MBP?
Correct or the 17″
from Apple’s website:
The new 15-inch MacBook Pro is better for the environment, thanks to its new mercury-free display. Backlit by light emitting diodes (LEDs), the display weighs less and is more power efficient than the cold cathode fluorescent lamps (CCFLs) which most notebooks employ, and provides full brightness immediately after the system is turned on
what is correct?
That the computer displays are LCD and not the LED
contrary to what the website states? I’ll use this for reference later.
sorry, just checked with the specialists and they said the newer 15″ MacBook Pro was also LED.
and your statement that 23″ and 30″ Cinema Displays are LED based? – Cinema Displays are now LED based? I didn’t get that from the MBP release. Yes, only the 23″ and 30″ at this time.
sorry, just checked with the specialists and they said the newer 15″ MacBook Pro was also LED.
Yes, you said that. What about your statement about the Cinema Displays. Are they also LED based since the website doesn’t state that.
I said also so yes the newer HD displays are LED.
Thank you very much. Go AAPL!
You’re welcome.
Thank you for visiting the Apple Store. We appreciate your business.
What? No complaints about the graphics card? Where are the usual negative posters?
David, you do understand that it is you who has it wrong?
There are no Apple displays that are “LED based”.
The displays have LED dacklights. There is a big difference.
You seem to be the only person who thinks that Apple claimed that their MBP’s have LED displays. They didn’t.
Page 2 contained the upgrade to HDMI port. Unfortunately, page 2 became lost and no one notived to mossion.
Choose “Glossy LCD” on the $1999 15″, and it knocks $150 off the price! Strange!</b>
Okay, enuf of this LED stuff already…
All mac displays are LCD, even the new macbook pro 15″. LCD is the technology behind each pixel.
The only difference is that most are BACKLIT by flourecent lamps apart from the new macbook pro 15″ which are now BACKLIT by LEDs.
The difference is pretty minor, small saving on battery life and a minor win for the environment when you chuck it in a landfill (no mercury).
(sorry about the capitals, but we’ve already seen what happens when someone tries to use bold font!)
Some people just live to complain. No matter what you give them, they complain about what they didn’t get. Screw ’em.
It is interesting that Apple makes no mention of the new LED-backlit displays on their website.
Thanks for the clarification. I should have said LED-backlit instead of LED-based. But am I wrong about the Cinema Displays? I just want to make sure that I am the only person confused about this and not Apple people disseminating misinformation. Geez, I sound like a “wonk”.
I miss the very portable 12″ size..
Alansky, go to the link and read the paragraph on the top right side under the picture of the 30″ display titled “More than beautiful”.
“I can make myself wait a few more months to save the $129 for Leopard.”
Dude! That’s one tank of gas! You gotta be kidding.
</b>
Fixed?
The bold type has ruined my eyes. Thanks a lot.
I love my glossy 17″ MBP.
Ugh. I want to apologize to MDN for the idiots that post before their brain is engaged. The uninformed and helpless are out in numbers today, drooling on themselves, and breathing through their mouths. I am proud to see the Mac users out there setting them straight, but how do the dolts stumble upon MDN anyways? Is there a link from some Windows Vista forum or something? Well, my sign-off today will be, “There’s nothing a Windows machine can do that a Mac can’t do significantly and noticeably better.”
</strong>How does this compare with the new LED-backlit Dell laptop that was mentioned on MacRumors yesterday?
no HDMI port !
Even DULL are planning on giving laptop connectivity to large Flat screens in HD.
This is just a spec refresh
—
AppleTV you mean~
It is not the industry’s first LED backlit laptop. The highest-end Lifebook has had an LED backlit display for months now.
Oooh, now my new MacBook Pro is already outdated. :(((
i knew it was gonna happen, but still it’s a somewhat sad thing.
I’ll get over it though. I’m soo very happy with my first Mac. :::)))))
What I want to know is “for sure” if the 17″ is an LED but it just doesn’t say so.
David, “for sure” the 17″ does NOT have the LED backlight.
can someone tell me if the new higher rez display ( 1920X1200 ) can be reset to run at 1680×1050 if I find the higher rez to be too small ( screen elements I mean because of the higher resolution ) I’d like to get it but fear that it will kill my eyes and I won’t be able to adjust it. If I can back it off I would be very happy and not have any reservations. Please email me if you have any dirt on this!!!! Thanks

Peter Michael Lozzi,
“There’s nothing a Windows machine can do that a Mac can’t do significantly and noticeably better.”
I couldn’t agree more!
Please guys can you tell me if this is or has Santa Rosa? Thanks
Anthony:) AKA Awesome
“Yeh sure, why go to the expensive upmarket restaurant which is selling the rarest steak money can buy when McDonalds have a 2 for 1 offer on Big Macs?”
I think IMaki’s saying why pay twice the price for the same steak.
Answer because you like the restaurant’s decor compared to the one which serves equally good food at a good price.
>”They say LED displays are more power efficient. Any idea how much of an impact this will have on battery life?”
Well, I have heard estimates that the displays themselves are up to 20% more power efficient – how that clocks up in battery life is always a combination of factors (CPU load, DVD drive running etc. etc. – all the usual things). All said, I’m sure it will squeak out some more time before a recharge. The real big deal is the color accuracy of the LED screens. They also have a 180˚ viewing angle, which means you can still see all the color and saturation when looking at it all the way from a parallel vantage point – sweet.
The 2.2 GHz, 15-inch MacBook Pro for $1,999 is not a bad price considering what you get. It is a “Pro” model after all…
Nice update! 😀
>”can someone tell me if the new higher rez display ( 1920X1200 ) can be reset to run at 1680×1050 if I find the higher rez to be too small ( screen elements I mean because of the higher resolution ) I’d like to get it but fear that it will kill my eyes and I won’t be able to adjust it. Here’s the dirt – if the native resolution is 1920 x 1200 and you scale it back through prefs it will look blurry – PERIOD. You need to run it at it’s native resolution – that’s how many physical pixels the screen has. Adjusting through prefs to a lower setting will make things blurry. Go to prefs and lower the res on your current setup and you’ll se what I mean. You’re only going to get full clarity at the native res.
^^^ Although there has been talk of Leopard being resolution independent, in which case it would not be a problem.
Please guys can you tell me if this is or has Santa Rosa?
Yes. Hence the full 4GB RAM utilization.
(The extra flash memory buffer supported by the chipset is a crutch to compensate for Windows problems, so it is not needed on a Mac which boots within a few seconds anyway.)
I think IMaki’s saying why pay twice the price for the same steak.
Answer because you like the restaurant’s decor compared to the one which serves equally good food at a good price.
It was very clear what he claimed there. Unfortunately he was and you are unable to actually produce a machine that’s actually comparable to a MacBook Pro at half the price.
Not in some features, in all of them!
The reality is that PC notebooks which are halfway comparable usually cost at least the same as a MacBook Pro.
As I said earlier: A MacBook Pro is not a toy like most of the PC notebooks. It’s a heavy duty tool for professional use.
“equally good food”
“the same steak”
Like say, McDonald’s vs. Morton’s? The same steak?
You are either delusional or you have no standards for taste.
You completely missed the point. The two different meals in quality and taste are not the same. The decor is a bonus.
</B> End of bold
” width=”19″ height=”19″ alt=”smile” style=”border:0;” />
mmm bold
“The two different meals in quality and taste are not the same. “
That’s the point, the steak is the same. With the Mac perhaps you get white tablecloths and linen napkins, but you get the same Steak.
SO if it’s the quality of the meal you want, you go for the cheap place around the corner with the great chef.
If it’s pretentiousness you value, and you feel superior because you pay more for the same thing, you go with the Mac.
“The decor is a bonus.”
Nope, it’s all there is that is different.
I was on the Dell web site today – never did find the 2.2 and 2.4 GHz Core 2 Duos, do they only offer them in the very high end? I know you can buy a $1k laptop there – if you want a 1.6 GHz system with 512 MB of RAM and an 80 GB HDD that weighs a pound more than a MBP – or you can add faster processors more RAM and a bigger HDD and pay just as much. So as usual you can get a cheaper PC but you get what you pay for – not much. Get a refurb MBP if you can’t afford a new one instead of wasting your money on a PC laptop!
MDN magic word “middle” – don’t get caught in the middle of PC hell, get a Mac?!?
That’s the point, the steak is the same. With the Mac perhaps you get white tablecloths and linen napkins, but you get the same Steak.
Simply post a link to a machine which is actually comparable to a MacBook Pro at half the price to prove your point.
You can’t? Well, you’re not the first to fail at it. (Nor probably the last.)
The benchmark is not to find any PC at half the price, it’s finding an actually comparable one at half the price (or at the very least substantially lower).
“but you get the same Steak.”
You are delusional. A Big Mac and a NY Strip are the same steak?
STFU, you stupid little ass before you embarass yourself more.
“Nope, it’s all there is that is different.”
That doesn’t even make sense. Do you need a Verb Buddy?
What a dumbass.
There goes our downpayment. Damn!
many thanks for the valuable information

I don’t know what all the fuss is about it says illuminated keyboard on both models 15 and 17–just to let you know
I love reading all the posts from people that plan on making the big move from MBP original or Rev. A to this revision. I just ordered the top 15″ MBP to replace my poor leprosy-stricken iBook 700mghz G3. The back light died completely about six months ago, so I converted the notebook into a franken-book with an external LCD screen. I put off a new computer until I finished grad school (just a little present to myself). To say the least, I think I just might notice a difference in performance over the status quo.
I just would like to see the pro line go to a single quad core processor. I enjoy my core duo 2 but a quad core would inspire me on a new purchase. Just a hope..
Great piece of kit, ….how well are the 4200rpm HDD going to handle video media??? I do use externals but every now and then need to used the internal as a safety…I hold my breath…….
To the jester who whined about no HDMI: it still has DVI. If you have a TV worthy of HDMI, then chance are that you already have a DVI<->HDMI cable. If not, you can get one for <$20. M-x acquire-clue
