RUMOR: Apple iPhone to feature larger flash memory, more features than expected

Apple Store“According to our source from an Apple affliate (that shall not be named), Steve Jobs left out some of the iPhone’s features out of his Macworld keynote…and at the same time downplayed some the features,” ViM3 reports.

“Why would Steve downplay some of the features? Our source says that since the iPhone would be released in June, Apple did not want to affect iPod sales. Apple has not released a new video player version of their iPod since 2005, despite the update to the 5G iPod in 2006. Here’s the low down,” ViM3 reports.

According to ViM3, Apple’s iPhone will feature:

• More memory than 4GB and 8GB
• User Replacable Battery
• Wireless N Support
• Software – variation of iWork
• iTunes Streaming
• iTunes Store – download using Wi-Fi internet or if you have internet service through your carrier (AT&T in the USA).
• Price / AT&T Service Plans – rebate with a 2-year contract and special iPhone plans from AT&T.

“With just a few more weeks left to iPhone launch, we shall see what else Steve has to show off. Steve is set to go over these new features and a wrap up of the iPhone at the beginning of WWDC.,” ViM3 reports.

  1. Let’s not get too excited now and disappointed later. If the iPhone got even half these extra features, we should be super happy. This appears more like a wish list. I do expect some sort of iWork, though, as Apple can write quality software fast and there is no reliance on AT&T in that area. My biggest skepticism of the iPhone is AT&T getting it right, not Apple getting it right.

  2. Hmm. I see the iPhone premiering with these specs:

    Screen size: 3.5 inches
Screen resolution: 320 by 480 at 160 ppi
    Input method: Multi-touch
    Operating system: OS X
    Storage: 4GB or 8GB
    GSM Quad-band (MHz: 850, 900, 1800, 1900)
    Wireless data Wi-Fi (802.11b/g) + EDGE + Bluetooth 2.0
    Camera 2.0 megapixels
Battery Up to 5 hours Talk / Video / Browsing Up to 16 hours Audio playback
    Dimensions 4.5 x 2.4 x 0.46 inches / 115 x 61 x 11.6mm
    Weight 4.8 ounces / 135 grams

Also I believe the price point is $499 for the 4 GB model and $599 for the 8 GB model. There will be no subsidy as said by AT&T and Apple since Macworld. As for a special plan, well that’s up to AT&T to decide, it is their network. They can either rip off people or actually have a good plan. My guess is rip people off only because it is cell phone company. I havent seen an honest one yet. I said this before and I’ll say it again; the only thing holding back the iPhone is the primitive U.S. cell phone system, which is considered a joke anywhere else in the world. But it makes some fat white man alot of money so it must be the best system out there.

  3. So maybe where we’re really going is, (and this would explain Apples apparent slowness in getting a major upgrade to the iPod out before now): Apple is going to produce just iPhones – the iPhone is or will be the next gen. iPod.

  4. I agree with AP. Remember, it is not ATT, it is SBC. SBC only changed the name. They have horrible service, and very overpriced rates for their other products. Cingular/ATT/SBC is the same company. They will not pass on the savings from not having a subsidy on the the phone to the consumers. Their CEO’s and execs need their bonuses and their Golden Parachute. SBC needs to recover its cost of buying ATT. This is one way they will do so.

There will be no discounted rate. There may be a SPECIAL iPhone service plan, which will be 1) cheap introductory rate for a month, but be very expensive in the long run; 2) REQUIRED to buy an iPhone.

  5. I know it’s unlikely, but what if the reason for the iLife/iWork delay is iPhone versions of both suites? OK, I’m not about to write a document of put together a presentation on a phone, but for some reason people always bitch about there not being a mobile version of word on the phone as one of their ‘it won’t be successful’ reasons.

Still, if it were possible to just hook up my iPhone to a projector to give a presentation, it would be wicked cool.

MDNMW: Income, as in, this phone stands to increase mine in spite of the initial cost.

  6. i was thinking the other day with having 20 gb worth of songs/video… why would I want to buy a 4 gb or an 8gb iphone. might wait for next revision.. and then came this…

i have a feeling they will bump the memory of these models to 10 and 15 gb..

  7. Somehow i doubt all of that will be added. There might be something Jobs is holding back to pleasantly surprise everyone, but that lists seems unrealistic.

I’m personally hoping for 16gb memory and iTunes Store

  8. too sad it is only a wish list. would be nice but apple will stick to the features it promised. and no way there will be any mentioning of the iPhone at WWDC besides maybe a developer-kit for iPhone apps. all of it would be fantastic but only wishful thinking, i guess.

  10. RUMOR: Apple iPhone to feature larger flash memory, more features than expected

Whatever. Just ship the damn thing already.

Although, IMO, being able to include “more features than expected” in a 1.0 release makes better PR than an emasculated first-effort people can’t wait to replace.

  11. I thought perhaps Apple would increase the storage size with the actually released model. 4 and 8GB seemed way to low for what is essentially a true “video” iPod. I like the replaceable battery rumor; I think that is likely, since most mobile phones have replaceable batteries so it is an expectation. Being able to buy songs and other media from the iTunes Store directly from the device would be THE killer feature. It opens the “iPod” to music-loving people who do not like using computers… HUGE.
