Apple’s Mac OS X 10.4.10 enters ‘widespread testing phase’

Apple Store“A tenth and presumably final update to Apple’s Mac OS X 10.4 Tiger operating system is reported to have hit the widespread testing phase, placing within its cross-hairs nearly all of the system’s most vital components,” AppleInsider reports.

“The forthcoming update will be the first in recent history from the Cupertino-based Mac maker to reach the ‘dot ten’ sub version, or Mac OS X 10.4.10,” AppleInsider reports.

“People who claim to be familiar with the test releases have noted on various web outlets that builds presently do not contain any outstanding issues. That should come as no surprise, as Apple is no longer adding feature enhancements to Tiger through its incremental maintenance updates,” AppleInsider reports. “Instead, the company is striving solely to stabilize and optimize the system ahead of Leopard, its next-generation OS due out this October.”

  1. People who use M$…don’t you wish M$ would take your OS purchase and give you ten updates between purchases in a year and a half’s time. Leopard is the next and greatest focus, and Apple still wants to make sure Tiger is even better and up to date. Isn’t it scary and unheard of that someone actually seems to care? No stray ducks out of line…that is why the stock has been going up the mountain and not down the mountain the last 5 years.

  2. I read on a forum by someone who says she has a friend whose friend’s husband who works at Apple was told by an official’s steno that a Tiger update is required because Leopard will be delayed until October, so Tiger needs more iPhone support than they first thought.

  3. The great mystery of ThinkSecret and AppleInsider’s source revealed:
“I read on a forum by someone who says she has a friend whose friend’s husband who works at Apple was told by an official’s steno . . .”

    There you have it.

  4. You think that if Leopard was on time, Apple will not release an update for Tiger to work well with iPhone? You think Apple will force people to buy Leopard so as to use the iPhone? Well Apple is not that stupid, they are not MS making Vista.

  5. AppleInsider reports. “Instead, the company is striving solely to stabilize and optimize the system ahead of Leopard, its next-generation OS due out this October.”

So, going by AppleInsider’s logic, Apple is working on one final sub-release to polish 10.4 just before it’s replaced. Brilliant. ” width=”19″ height=”19″ alt=”raspberry” style=”border:0;” />

Somehow methinks Leopard will hardly be a Vista-class dud, where the old system has to be brought back.

IMO the timing of 10.4.10 reeks of new hardware support, be it the iPhone or new iMacs.

    WWDC will tell…

  6. Good to see it has the Made in America Logo!

Passed your last on to a few people who will get a kick out of it. I warned them not to get the mix wrong????

Now get back to work and stop this silliness!

  7. > I wonder if this could be the “iPhone” update…

iPhone was NEVER dependent on Leopard being on the Mac. After iPhone is released, there will be customers using Tiger, Leopard (in October), Windows XP, Windows Vista, etc. iPhone will no doubt sync with the computer just like an iPod syncs with a computer.

The release might in fact add support for iPhone, but the release would not be something done as a result of a delay in Leopard. Even if Leopard was released in June, there would be plenty of Tiger users (maybe even Panther users) who do not want to upgrade right away who decide to buy an iPhone right away.
