“A proposed deal between Apple and digital media company Gracenote could soon see the iPod maker serve up song lyrics through its ubiquitous iTunes Store,” Katie Marsal reports for AppleInsider.
Marsal reports, “The move would be part of a larger industry-backed push to stifle proliferation of unauthorized websites that currently dominate the market, often offering inaccurate lyrics and never compensating artists for their work.”
“Gracenote and Yahoo! kicked-off the effort earlier this week in announcing a licensing deal allowing Yahoo! Music to offer legal, licensed song lyrics from hundreds of thousands of songs to its customers,” Marsal reports.
Marsal reports, “Speaking to Reuters, [Craig Palmer, president and chief executive officer of Gracenote] revealed his firm is in discussions with various other music partners, such as Apple’s iTunes. ‘We wouldn’t be in the business to launch just one service, so stay tuned,’ he said.”

What’s to stop the ‘unathorised’ sites anyway? Surely they can look at the authorised lyrics and just update their own to make them accurate?
Long overdue. The iPod could be the perfect karaoke machine.
ChrissyTwo,
Amazing what people will post when hiding behind the anonymity of the internet. Would you be saying the same thing to Chrissy’s face? Or would you back down like the little pu$$y that you are?
I agree this is overdue, but better late than never.. this is one of the last things I think from holding me back from buying iTunes only over CD: lyrics (along with no DRM and higher bit rate).
amen, cubert!
on topic: lyrics via itunes would be cool, maybe in the form of an official apple widget. although the unofficial widgets are pretty good as well.
You’d think that the lyrics sites would update their lyrics by looking at a CD, but it’s not always that easy. For instance, what about bands that don’t print their lyrics? Or how about bands that don’t print all their lyrics, or use crazy fonts or otherwise make it hard to read what they’re saying? Or what about when you download a song but you don’t have the lyrics because you used iTunes or (and no-one does this), you used another program? So lyrics sites do have a reason for existence.
Paul Harvey, the argument will no doubt be that if you can offer a convenient legal service then people will use that rather than a hit and miss illegal one – same as with the music stores themselves.
I liked the “ubiquitous iTunes Store”. This guy GETs IT.
For those of you who don’t,
ubiquitous : adjective : present, appearing, or found everywhere
This should help Bob Dylan’s sales.
About fricken time!
iKaraoke!
Don’t know what lyrics would do that much good unless Apple actually allows a preference (check box) to actually put them UP ON SCREEN like the visualizer. The new PS3 plays AAC and MP3s and it ignores lyrics as well. So much for karoake capabilities… ???
@TMF… I almost choked on a pizza roll that was so funny.
Twisted Mac Freak,
Early REM, too!

I second your sentiment to C2 ..
The real ChrissyOne adds so much to the ambiance here at MDN ! .. I love her wit, and cant tell you how many keyboards i’ve messed up reading her posts !
Its a shame that there are immature people out there who feel the need to post under other peoples handles !

Love your interpretation of lyrics !
Good idea. It would be fun to have lyrics.
How about opera librettos, song cycle and Lieder texts, too!
Also, Apple needs to tweak the iTunes database format and add some fields for classical music aficionados.
A Separate field for soloists.
A Field for multiple movement works: Symphony #13 – I. – II. – III – IV., etc.
It’s long overdue.
…and of course, everybody’s favorite:
“There’s a bathroom on the right…” — CCR
Here‘s a fun collection.
The lyrics could come rolling over the screen in a semitransparent way, with a ball jumping from word to word in a karaoke-ish way, all via iTunes ! I would love that !
And PLEASE add a record button in iTunes som I can record radioshows !
