Apple: Why stop at just one iPod?

Apple Store“Who needs more than one iPod? A tiny Shuffle, midsize Nano and cavernous video iPod might look cool lined up in a row, but there’s little practical reason to purchase multiple units,” Rachel Rosmarin reports for Forbes.

Rosmarin reports, “Even so, Apple thinks once you’re in its retail stores, you’ll cave to the soft sell. In recent weeks, signs have gone up in Apple stores asking shoppers, “Why stop at just one?” Apple has not acknowledged the new marketing campaign, or responded to calls asking if it will spread to their Web site and other advertising, but sharp-eyed bloggers have snapped photos of them in stores.”

“Even though iPod sales may be softening, the company’s still on track to beat–by a long shot–the 8.53 million iPods it sold in the second quarter of last year. The average analyst estimate for how many iPods Apple will sell in the same quarter this year is 10.9 million,” Rosmarin reports.

Rosmarin reports, “And market research firm iSuppli says the personal media player market still has a lot of growth left in it. The company forecasts 216.9 million media player shipments in 2007, up from 178.1 million in 2006. By 2011, more than 268.6 million units should ship. Apple is also poised to maintain its 70% market share…”

We know many iPod owners who use an iPod nano/iPod shuffle for running and working out and take their video-capable iPods on the road.

  1. eight total for four people:

2-1st Gen Mac-only (both of which still work great and hold a decent charge, BTW)
    2-1st Gen Shuffles
    2-2nd Gen Shuffles
    1-1st Gen Nano
    1-5th Gen video iPod — 30Gb

Although 3 are mine, I usually only use the 2nd Gen shuffle.

  2. -Dad (me): 3 total: 2 shuffles (one gum stick for cycling & dirty work; the other a silver matchbook) & 1 U2 iPod hooked to amp for guitar practice.

-Mom: 2 total: 1 iPod Nano Project red for everyday & 1 iPod white 20G for kitchen speakers.

-Daughter 1: 1 iPod, a 1st generation that has been replaced by Apple a couple of times (I think it was 5gigs) the last time it was replaced it came back a 2d gen model. (she is going to get a nano as soon as she saves her money and not spend it on clothes)
-Daughter 2: 1 iPod, 15gig white, not sure of the generation. (a hand-me-down from Mom)
    -Son 1: 1 iPod Nano 2G silver
-Son 2: too young for one yet…

    -Business:
in 2005: 10 iPod Nanos 1st gen (the credit card ones) to special clients. They were such a hit that I decided to do it again this year.)
in 2006: 20 iPod Nanos 2G Silvers all engraved with personal thank you’s to special clients, vendors and staff. (everyone loved them)

So that’s 3 for me personally, for the family: 8, and I have personally purchased all but one-half of daughter #1’s iPod.

  3. I have 2, a 3G 30GB ipod, and a 1GB Shuffle (1G). The latter became mine when I bought my better half a 4GB Nano.
The shuffle is great when commuting to work, just skip songs until I hear something I want to hear at that moment. The 30GB iPod is for longer trips or xfering files.

  4. I have had one of every ipod since beginning, and currently have a shuffle for gym, nano for work and a video for when on long train or bus rides.

Also i have 16 imediate family memebers with the latest nano’s

but i am the only one that knows and uses the power of the mac!!!

  5. I own 3. A 10 gig 2G (The kids use it now.)
a 4 gig 1g mini (Wife uses it at work)
and 4 gig nano 1g (Mine and we use it on the road)

I would like to get a 60 gig to use with the iPod HiFi to use as THE home stereo and to hold all my podcasts, songs as well as the rest of the family’s. Also, it would be nice to use to play vids for the kids in the car, in a hotel or such.

  6. I just want to know why Ms. Rosmarin said “cavernous video iPod.” What?

I’d also like to know who her source is “Even though iPod sales may be softening…”

One is an opinion and the other is a repeat of something reputed months ago.

    So much for Forbes!

  7. I like having an iPod shuffle around, even when I have a big iPod too. It’s “limited” in just the right way. I have the old one with the USB plug. I think that’s a good combo. A shuffle for “moving around” activity, where you don’t want to look at a screen and you don’t want a hard drive in there. The big iPod for everywhere else.

  8. I have a 30 GB as my personal jukebox to store all of my music at home and a Shuffle for going out , running, etc.

I was going to stop at the 30 GB, but I got a couple of Shuffles as gifts for my brother and dad, and I looked at it and tought “this one is really cool!” And the price is good too!

I thought I was a little wried for haveing more than one, but, hey, I’m not alone!!!

  9. I( can see it now, in a couple of years as iPod sales begin to cool, and there are say 400 million of them out there, the MS pundits will croon, see iPods are dying like we predicted, now Zune can rule!! LOL ” width=”19″ height=”19″ alt=”grin” style=”border:0;” />

And Microsoft announces (in year 4) how Zune is in it for the long haul and will break 4 million in shipments!!! Also, stores complain that they have no place left for all the unsold Zunes.!!! ” width=”19″ height=”19″ alt=”grin” style=”border:0;” />
