MacService introduces a new storage upgrade service for the newly released Apple TV media controller. For as little as $195 the internal storage capacity can be increased to 160GB, allowing over 200 hours of video, 36,000 songs, or 100,000 photos to be stored on the AppleTV. You can now store all of your movies, music and pictures on your Apple TV without having to stream it from you computer. All pricing includes a new hard drive, professional installation, roundtrip shipping and data transfer.
How it works- MacService sends a courier to your location to retrieve your Apple TV. Once it arrives back at MacService, a certified technician installs the new drive and transfers the data over from your old drive. After the upgrade is completed, your Apple TV is tested and sent back to you, along with your old drive. All upgrades are completed within 24 hours of arrival.
MacService is a leading provider of mail-in repairs and upgrades for Mac and PC laptop computers.

can I send my wife for upgrade?
Apple just get their … in gear and sale Apple TV with 160Gb out-of-the-box.
I think Apple wants a cheep box for starters to open up the market. That is why they don’t have a 160 gig box. Give it one generation and then every $TV is going to be 100+ gigs and there will be 3 flavors with internet video streaming and everything.
wait one gen.
@macschemer
If you send your wife to me by courier, I’ll ‘service’ her for free!
Buh-bye to the warranty though, I’ll bet.

don’t kid yourself. AppleTV is a Cash Cow.
wives come with a warranty? Nobody tells me anything!
This will void your warranty. Buyer beware.
I wonder if the cronjob will undo the upgrade? That would suck if you tossed $195 for nothing and lost your warranty.
But why upgrade? I just purchased my apple TV yesterday. It streams flawlessly. I can access all of the movies I’ve already got on my computer at home. There’s no need to do an internal upgrade, just stream your content.
The only hitch I found is I couldn’t figure out how to stream my photos. So, I sync’d the photos, and then I stream the music, movies, and TV shows.
Unless I’m missing something, there is no need to upgrade the internal HD on an apple TV.
You can upgrade your wife but it will cost you half of your yearly income for an undetermined amount of time. Depending on what your state contract allows for.
Drinking is cheaper.
no warranty on wifes, but will cost you a fortune to trade in.
there are two copies of the OS in the Apple TV. One is used and what most people modify. The second is used to revert to original periodically incase a virus or something corrupts the OS.
The HD size is completely separate
I don’t think this is necessary. At first I was pesismistic about a 40 gig drive on the TV. Now that I’m using one, I don’t really care about storage as I stream everything except for photos. All I have on the TV is pictures and music (for the pictures in slideshow mode). I’m running an Airport Express and streaming from my G5 over 802.11G. No lag, no problems. I’ve sent 720P and less over the network. So unless you want to copy all of your data over, you don’t need much storage space.
One thing I would like to see is to access media data from the Airport Extreme USB port. If I hooked up a 500GB or 1TB drive to that port and used it to store media files that were accesible from TV that would save me from having to keep my computer on. But since it doesn’t sleep anyway, it doesn’t bother me.
I think Apple was smart only putting 40 gigs on the TV. With the 802.11N they clearly intended to stream most if not everything from your computer.
Oh, and one more thing…. the opening video sequence you see when you initially set up the box is sweet. The only way to access it is to unplug it and plug it back in. It’s so cool apple should make it available on command.
I know, I know…. it’s geek porn. I’m so ashamed.
For as little as $195 the internal storage capacity can be increased to 160GB.
Sounds fishy. $195 for 160 GB? Whose drive? Why does it say “for as little as”? Sounds to me like $195 gets you a teeny tiny upgrade. I’ll bet you pay up to $300 or $400 for a 5400 160GB drive.
I can’t find the TV place on their site to check.
I agree with others. Why store your media on this device? Streaming works. The only thing I’d like to see is a gigabit ethernet connector on it. Of course, the airport extreme needs it too. While 802.11n is nice, its only equivalent to 100BaseT ethernet. Gigabit is the only way for HD to stream.
I use the tv hard drive for photos only and a few songs also…the rest from computer or internet is streamed flawlessly. In fact, it’s kinda a nuisance to sync data, simpler just to stream it. I don’t get the whole “the hard drive is too small” controversy.
Price (reality) Check,
And for £30 I can buy a dvd player. What’s your point?
I don’t think Apple are assuming that anyone is going to realistically buy an Apple TV without already having an iTunes setup (Mac or Pc) already. The XBOX solution may be cheaper than buying everything even remotely related to Apple TV, and yes it allows movies from the Net directly but not a huge amount of people have a Net connection and no computer.
Also, you don’t have to have an aiport extreme, you could plug it in via ethernet, the Apple TV needs wireless in the same way an XBox does.
The one thing Price (reality) Check fails to mention is .. The main drawback to the X-Box 360 “Elite” is …
it runs WinDoze !! (Cant wait for the anit-virus companys realize theres a whole new market in MS gaming devices)
Besides … somehow it seems that using the word “Elite” with anything connected to MicroShaft is an oxymoron !!
