RUMOR: Apple considering licensing iPhone OS X, multi-touch?

Apple Store“There’s a very large lake in Northern Utah that has almost as much salt as should be necessary for this rumor, but as it comes from one of our people from Apple behind the lines, there’s a chance that we might see some of these details in the future,” Matt Hickey reports for CrunchGear.

Hickey reports, “While checking the validity of a totally different unsubstantiated rumor, our contact dropped something of a bomb on accident. When asked if he or she could confirm our rumor (which we’ll get to later today), he or she responded that he or she saw something about it in an email, but didn’t read it, as it didn’t pertain to his or her job, and was late for a meeting at the time. I asked what kind of meeting, and he or she said, ‘Licensing for the iPhone.'”

  1. This is the problem with a world where people make no distinction between words like ‘then’ and ‘than’, ‘for’ and ‘of’, and a host of other words! No one can be sure what was meant because people are so rarely grammatically correct, let alone precise.

  2. Alfie,

Original thoughts, ideas, and dissension are not anti-american.

If I remember right, didn’t the people that came over here from Europe come to get away from persecution for thinking differently? Hmm, think so. This is stolen land anyway, so stop with the anti-american shit, it gets old. Especially from people who recite verbatim the shit they hear from Fox News and Cowboy George in the White House.

Apple is right where it should be. Why you’re here is beyond any of us.

  3. “Oh, and by the way, Apple are a hardware company. If the “rumour” doesn’t fit in to the idea of Apple selling more hardware (Macs, iPods, iPhones, AppleTVs) then it is just crap. It is a simple but accurate test.”

I don’t disagree. I’m just saying that if the phones all share the common denominator of OS X, it starts to make more sense which computer to buy to the consumer.

Of course, Vista is also giving that same, gentle shove. ” width=”19″ height=”19″ alt=”raspberry” style=”border:0;” />

  4. Not really, it doesn’t make a difference as the iPhone will be a closed (Apple controlled) platform. They are stand-alone devices, the only interaction they have with another OS is via an application (iTunes) to copy across content and contacts. There is no benefit to iPhone (or iPod) users to be using a Mac as opposed to a PC, so what difference does it make?

Apple are a hardware company. They are not Microsoft. Apple believe in making an integrated product – this was reiterated by Steve Jobs at MacWorld (the quote that said “people who make software should make their own hardware – Alan Kane (?)).

It makes no sense for Apple to license Mac OS X or iPhone OS X to anyone. It doesn’t help Apple, and it doesn’t help their products.

If you license software to any hardware, you end up with Microsoft.

  5. “.. I’d say the Bay is one hell of a place to be..”

    Got that right, nick …
    btw .. whats the latest on the A’s moving to Fremont ? ” width=”19″ height=”19″ alt=”LOL” style=”border:0;” />

  6. What’s the big problem with other phones licensing Apple’s technology ?

Would you be happier if they used stripped down Windows instead ?

It would make perfect sense to license some Apple technologies to third parties. The benefits would go way beyond the income generated, it would diminish the Windows stranglehold and would provide more devices that integrate well with Macs.

It’s only a phone, but it’s a better phone if it works the Apple way.

  7. Little Lost Alfie, I’m glad I live in a city that has lots of people who think, act and live differently. I wouldn’t want to live in a world where everyone was the same (kinda reminds me of a ground breaking commercial in 1984).

Free your mind and your ass will follow (with apologies to George Clinton)

  8. There’s a very large lake in Northern Utah that has almost as much salt as should be necessary for this rumor

There’s a very large cattle ranch in Wyoming that has almost as much bullshit as this article.

Steve Jobs does NOT license ANYthing. Never has.

Sure there’s a very remote possibility (never say never), but the no’s have it for anything realistic.

  9. “What’s the big problem with other phones licensing Apple’s technology ?”

There are a few problems. 1. Apples makes less money that selling an iPhone; 2. The integration between hardware and software isn’t as complete / solid, so the product is poorer; 3, That could damage the wider Apple brand; 4, Because there is no lock-in to the Mac platform, or benefit of using Macs over PCs on iPods or iPhones then Apple doesn’t necessarily gain anything from it. The same is NOT true of stand-alone Windows devices.

“Would you be happier if they used stripped down Windows instead ?”

I don’t care what other people do. I do care about Apple being a healthy, profitable company. Apple’s objective is not to replace Microsoft / Windows, but to provide an excellent, better alternative. Apple is not Microsoft.

“It would make perfect sense to license some Apple technologies to third parties. The benefits would go way beyond the income generated, it would diminish the Windows stranglehold and would provide more devices that integrate well with Macs.”

iPhones integrate equally with PCs and Macs. The income generated is less than selling an iPhone. There would be little benefit to Apple, whichever way you look at it.

“It’s only a phone, but it’s a better phone if it works the Apple way.”

I agree, which is why Apple is going to sell you an iPhone, where they design the hardware, the OS, the software and the interface to work perfectly.

  10. Apple hasn’t licensed FairPlay yet, so why would Apple even consider licensing iPhone? The only answer that makes any sense is that Apple patented the heck out of iPhone’s technology, and so there could be licenses for the various technology portions of iPhone.

However, Apple’s track record under Steve Jobs says otherwise.

Apple will license iPhone the day the moon hits the earth.

  11. Don’t challenge me, sh!ttards. I’m too good.

    Nick Holla:

    “@ Alfie

Just curious, where do you reside?

Coming from the bay area (also known as the homeland for Apple) and have had the priveledge of traveling the country on tour with a hip hop show, I’d say the Bay is one hell of a place to be.”

Nick … you’re a dipshit. No, not because you live in San Francisco, but because you like “hip hop”. Hip hop sucks, and people with taste not in their ass realize this. Nice try. And thanks for playing.

Ohhh, P.S. — Where do I live? Answer: NOT San Francisco.

    P.P.S. — It’s privilege. Learn to spell.

    Shawn:

“Original thoughts, ideas, and dissension are not anti-american.”

Shawn, you obviously were educated in San Francisco. That’s why you’re too stupid to realize that “American” begins with a capital “A”. Of course, in your blind hatred for things that really matter and for efforts abroad that serve to actually, you know, PROTECT YOU, it’s understandable how you could’ve been distracted and accidentally written “anti-american” not once but TWICE. Either that, or — like Nick — you’re a dipshit. Or a socialist. Either way you’re an “anti-American” steaming pile.

And come on, “stolen land”??? You gotta be kidding me. You live under the protection of the greatest, freest, most prosperous government and economic system in the history of man and you endorse treasonous slander from a sagging blowhard windbag harpie like Pelosi and you’re trying to educate ME!??!??? BWAAAAHH-hahahahahahahahhahahhhhhhhhhhhhhh.

Oh, and Shawn, P.S. — “Communist leanings” and “Anti-Americanism” should not be confused with “Original thoughts”. Again, note the capital “A”. As in “Asshole”. As in, “You”.

    sfsteve:

“Little Lost Alfie, I’m glad I live in a city that has lots of people who think, act and live differently. I wouldn’t want to live in a world where everyone was the same (kinda reminds me of a ground breaking commercial in 1984).

Free your mind and your ass will follow (with apologies to George Clinton)

    MW=sun
Kiss me where the sun doesn’t shine!”

Dearest steve: The multiple ass references fooled me for a second, but then I remembered where you’re from and I realized that anyone named “sfsteve” is probably not only a homosexual but also an unoriginal empty-headed douchebag from . . . San Francisco.

Demand any special rights lately? March down California Street with your feathers on and a ballgag stuck in your mouth yet this year? Help Pelosi and Murtha abandon the Iraqi people lately? Get all those guns banned in violation of the Second Amendment today? Any sit-ins for Mumia this month? Succeed in getting all of the members of the military that protects you thrown out of the city limits yet? Pass out more Glory Hole location maps this week?

Yaah, you’re right, what the hell am I thinking? An Apple store belongs in San Francisco. You’ve convinced me. Of course it does.

    NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOTTTTTTTT!!!!!!!!!!!!

P.S. — sfsteve, I’d kiss you where the sun doesn’t shine but I don’t want herpes/syphilis/AIDS/gonorrhea/warts/ass juice on my breath. I’ll leave that to you and the “fellas” down at the bathhouse.

    Ben Dover:

“Come on Alfie, SF isn’t so bad.

Someone’s gotta keep Vaseline in business….”

Ben Dover — you make a good joke. I think Unilever sells more Vaseline in San Francisco per capita than any other gay city in America.

  12. Awesome! I got a response!

So, I was actually educated in Los Angeles, where I currently live. Also, I have a bachelor’s in marketing and a MBA in management. Man, I’m dumb.

I chose the way I write on purpose – I know what should and shouldn’t be capitalized – I just don’t always adhere to the rules of the language. I know them well btw, I was asked to become a literature major because of my writing and I used to write for a magazine.

Anyway, on to you and your musings…I’m not anti-american, I’m pro thinking and questioning. Obviously, you are from somewhere in the heartland where white is right and the president is akin to a god. Right? I’m just bright enough to realize that much of what we hear should not be taken absolutely – we should wonder. I think you should know by now that things aren’t always what they seem – i.e. Newt Gingrich, Mr Moral Compass himself had an affair with an aide, left his wife, and married her. Man, I wish I could be as straight and narrow as him! I’m such a heathen huh? Man, I should practice that kind of morality and Christian belief!!!!

The soldiers aren’t exactly protecting anything at the moment except your president’s ass. If they were protecting us, they’d be in Afghanistan searching for the person responsible for 9/11. But, they’re off playing war games because baby Bush wanted to impress his daddy. Good call. I feel bad for those guys over there listening to the rhetoric from these clueless greedy pricks in office. It’s just sad. And, we have blindly ignorant people as yourself that eat it all up and then re-elect some guy who’s not smarter than my friend’s 5th grader into the most important power position in the world. Good call slick!

Do you even understand what Communism really is? Or do you base everything off of what McCarthy and Mr. Cross-Dresser Hoover said way back when? Or do follow what Reagan said with his brilliance? He, by the way, did nothing to stop the Cold War – right place, right time. He was just as bad as Bush has been.

And, finally, yes, this land was stolen. Stolen from people who already lived here because they looked different and believed different. I’m sorry to anyone that I offend right now, but that is just the Christian way. If you don’t think like us, you’re sub-human and you’re just plain wrong. That seems to completely contradict the point of a peaceful religion like Christianity. Anyway, yes, again, the land was stolen. And then the country was built on backs and shoulders of people of color because white people just felt entitled because they had more guns.

Anyway, I think I’ve made you look stupid enough today. I think everyone else did a commendable job as well. Don’t fuck with us. We’re smarter than you. Logic always trumps false comments and scare tactics Mr. Cheney. Thanks for being around so that we have someone to bring the reality of the true ignorance in the country to us. It simply is amazing how some people act and think.

Go play with your sister or something mountain man.

  13. “on accident” = british colloquialism, perfectly ok.

Apple OS and licensing, the question would never have arisen if Steve hadn’t been forced out of Apple, remember the dates folks!

Apple is a design company, or a solutions company. NB they aren’t a hardware company, all (at least the vast majority of) manufacture is sub-contracted. They can work with partners but only if the partners work together to create insanely great products. If partners wanna go down the maximize profits route (as most do) the Steve’s Apple doesn’t want to play that game.

Craigslist is another oddball in the eyes of The Street, not seeking to maximize monetization. There are higher ideals in life than dollars in the bank (and I don’t mean real gold!).

Would Apple license OSX or iPhone OSX, well yes if there was trust. Who would you trust? Moto – no (remember their mathlib that degraded OS performance), Siemens – don’t think so, Sony – no, Nokia – maybe, LG – difficult.

    Why bother?

  14. @Shawn

Tis oft said but ’tis true, the more that you know the more you realize there is that you don’t know.

Those who have overwhelming confidence in their academic ‘qualifications’ and those who are generally most ‘successful’ under the current predominant system have IQs (the popular measure) in the range of 80% – 90%. Indeed it is their blindness that enables them to push on regardless.

Qualifications are by definition limitations; http://www.thefreedictionary.com/dict.asp?Word=qualify

Knowledge is but a step on the path to understanding, I wish you well on your journey.

    @Alfie

I am reminded of the quotation, best not argue with idiots because they drag you down to their level and beat you with experience.

BTW, this comment contributed to handsomely by Saint Roche organic red wine ” width=”19″ height=”19″ alt=”grin” style=”border:0;” />

  15. Alfie gets it. Great posts. He sounds a lot like the IT guys at work.

They love the Palm phones with Windows Mobile. Windows Mobile! Right now their testing Motorola Q’s. The great thing is both phones use Windows Mobile. That’s the magic of licensing. Motorola, Palm, and more importantly, the end user benefits from the magnificent choice which is Microsoft Windows Mobile. If Apple had a product worth anything they would license it too, but market share talks, and nobody want their Windows wannabe crap anyway.

Thank you, Microsoft for licensing your well designed, forward thinking and easy to use software to well designed, forward thinking and easy to use phone manufacturers. It’s a match made in heaven.

If only Microsoft could develop technology to clone Dick Cheney into a super army of God fearing freedom fighters. The world would be a much better place. Thanks again, Alfie.

    Your potential. Our passion.

  16. Shawn while you are so eloquent in your “brow-beating” of Alfie.. it wasnt a fair fight ! .. Alfie has no weapons !

And Alfie, I am reminded of the old saying..
“Better to have people think you a fool.. than to open your mouth and remove all doubt”

Nice debate guys, but this is the wrong forum !

  17. i know i kind of came off as an asshole there about my education…i wasn’t trying to. i was just trying to show the guy that i wasn’t an illiterate jerk off or anything. i know there is a great deal of info i don’t know. please forgive that and understand i do know i don’t know everything. thanks!!

  18. Too late, Shawn. You’ve earned my wrath . . .

Dear Shawn; Since you’re the only one of the three crawling & babbling chimps who dared to respond to me, this is all for you. Apparently Nicky boy and gaysteve have thought better of dealing with those who are LESS BIASED than they are. Like me.

    “Awesome! I got a response!”

Don’t confuse MDN with your constantly-ignored listing on Match.com.

“So, I was actually educated in Los Angeles, where I currently live. Also, I have a bachelor’s in marketing and a MBA in management. Man, I’m dumb.”

You said it. Oh, and shouldn’t that be written “. . . and AN MBA in management.”?

    SNAP!

“I chose the way I write on purpose – I know what should and shouldn’t be capitalized – I just don’t always adhere to the rules of the language. I know them well btw, I was asked to become a literature major because of my writing and I used to write for a magazine.”

Yaah right, and I “USED to” be a NASA astronaut, right after I “USED to” sell used cars, which was right before you “USED to” actually study. Any literature major would know that you should’ve written “I purposely chose the way I write” or “I purposely chose the manner in which I write.” And even a remedial SpEd bus student knows that “USED to” is lazy use of the English language. Maybe you forgot all that, right before you decided to futilely post here in response to my brilliance.

“Anyway, on to you and your musings…I’m not anti-american, I’m pro thinking and questioning.”

Thinking? Doubtful. See immediate point above.

“Obviously, you are from somewhere in the heartland where white is right and the president is akin to a god. Right?”

WRONG, dipsh!t. Your arrogance is as debilitating as your poor sentence structure. You should take an extension course or something. Actually, though, you’re half right (even a stuck clock, you know?): I’m on the “right” coast. That’s eastern seaboard for you “literature majors”. Oh, and by the way, it speaks volumes that a dickwad such as yourself would just naturally assume that I’m white. Why, genius? Because let me tell you, I’m not the one going around on internet forums trumpeting how I was “asked” to be a literature major. You’re what’s called a reverse bigot — just as bad as the losers on the far other end of the spectrum, the right-wing uber-Christian wackos. Which leads us to our next dissection of your literature-based analysis . . .

” . . . Newt Gingrich, Mr Moral Compass himself had an affair with an aide, left his wife, and married her. Man, I wish I could be as straight and narrow as him! I’m such a heathen huh? Man, I should practice that kind of morality and Christian belief!!!!”

WTF?!?!? Way to use a straw man there, scarecrow. And again, nice to see your prejudices exposed: Just because I espouse pro-American thoughts and sentiments you assume I’m a “Christian”. Wow, you’ve not only managed to upset and pigeonhole ME (and thus garner my wrath) but you’ve also revealed your anti-Christian bigotry as well, no doubt angering thousands of other MDN readers, too. Jolly good show, jerkoff! Also, note that “Christian” has a capital “C”. Oh look – -you actually got that one correct! Golf clap for you.

Oh, and not that it’s any of your business, but NO — I’m not a Christian. Not that there’s anything wrong with that. But you lose. Again.

    (Continued below)

  19. The One-Sided Battle of Wits with Shawn (continued):

“The soldiers aren’t exactly protecting anything at the moment except your president’s ass. If they were protecting us, they’d be in Afghanistan searching for the person responsible for 9/11.”

They ARE in Afghanistan, touchhole. Stop listening to Air America every day (ooops . . . sorry. That one’s gotta hurt). And by the way, he’s YOUR President too, assclown. IF you even bothered to vote, that is. I know how the anti-American demonstration schedule in San Francisco is so booked these days, you might have even found time to picket on election day and missed your date with the poling station.

And no, that’s not a gay reference. Though seeing as we’re talking about Frisco, it’s actually kinda funny. Yay me.

    “Good call slick!”

    Thanks, Superfly!

“Do you even understand what Communism really is?”

No, but I’m hoping a “literature major” can fill me in.

By the way, I never mentioned communism, fool. I said Socialism. There’s a difference. Literature major? Are you sure you weren’t asked to be a Poli Sci major?

“And, finally, yes, this land was stolen. Stolen from people who already lived here because they looked different and believed different. I’m sorry to anyone that I offend right now, but that is just the Christian way. If you don’t think like us, you’re sub-human and you’re just plain wrong.”

No, only if you don’t think like ME. And again with the anti-Christianity shots. Way to tick off still more MDN readers, crotchrot. You really should lighten up, you Philistine. Get it? Christian. Philistine. Look it up, you literature major wannabe.

“That seems to completely contradict the point of a peaceful religion like Christianity. Anyway, yes, again, the land was stolen. And then the country was built on backs and shoulders of people of color because white people just felt entitled because they had more guns.”

I’m just gonna throw something out here for the whole class to consider . . . yaah, just gonna take a wild guess: Are you anti-Christian? Seems like it. Bigot. Oh, and what the hell’s wrong with guns? A lot of people are using them right now to provide you with the safety and security to say and write your anti-American slander at this very moment in a free society. Assuming you’re an . . . American, that is. And please tell me: What the hell have you done to serve this country? And no, clown — belittling the actions of everyone else doesn’t count. Unless you work at The New York Times.

“Anyway, I think I’ve made you look stupid enough today. I think everyone else did a commendable job as well. Don’t fuck with us. We’re smarter than you. Logic always trumps false comments and scare tactics Mr. Cheney. Thanks for being around so that we have someone to bring the reality of the true ignorance in the country to us. It simply is amazing how some people act and think.”

Shawn, you wouldn’t know logic if it flew out of your mother’s ass and bit you on the face. You and phlegm like you share at least one common trait: You allow your biased hatred for a man to poison the very tenets that form the basis of what this country’s all about. You put your party’s well-being and it’s thirst for power to tax us all even more and to social engineer us all and to turn us all into anti-Capitalist brain-dead greeners far ahead of what’s good for the safety and security and continued growth of the nation.

Calm down, comrade. You’ve got nothing to worry about. Your much-respected San Francisco is in no danger of developing any semblance of common sense or realistic, balanced patriotism. So you’ve still got a place to go and feel comfortable, you socialist literature major you.

“Go play with your sister or something mountain man.”

My sister’s actually cute. Hell, I might even do her if she weren’t my sister. And I’ll bet she’s cuter than your boyfriend.

    You lose.
