Apple’s Mac OS X and Safari gain share, Firefox slips

“Mozilla Corp.’s Firefox browser lost market share last month, Web metrics company Net Applications reported Wednesday. But Apple Inc.’s Safari continued to gain ground, an indicator of a slow but sure uptick in Macintosh sales,” Gregg Keizer reports for Computerworld.

Keizer reports, “In January, Firefox accounted for 13.7 percent of the browser usage market, Aliso Viejo, Ca.-based Net Applications said, down slightly from 14 percent the month before. The dip was the first since May 2006. Since then, Firefox’s share has risen continually month to month.”

Keizer reports, “More conspicuous than Firefox’s slip, however, has been Safari’s steady march. The Apple browser, which is based in part on the open-source Konqueror, boosted its share to 4.7 percent in January from 4.2 percent in December. A year ago, Safari held 3.1 percent of the browser market. ‘The more interesting trend is on the Safari side,’ said Vizzaccaro. ‘It looks like it’s taking share away from browsers in the Windows environment.'”

“Net Applications, which also tracks Web users’ operating systems, said that the increase in Safari’s share has been matched move for move by a climb in Mac OS X use. In January, the combined PowerPC- and Intel-based Mac OS X share was 6.2 percent, up from December’s 5.7 percent. ‘Both Safari and Mac OS X are heading in the same direction — up,’ Vizzaccaro said,” Keizer reports.

  1. I was a little shocked and amazed when ad aware and spybot started picking up malware on my girlfriend’s PC after she had been browsing using FF2. I’m now having her use opera for her browser whenever possible.

BTW, she is getting a Mac once her windows system dies.

  2. According to <in case you didn’t know>
    “alot” is not a word
Rather, it is used by those who want to advertise their level of literacy, like a T-shirt that says “Hey, I’m stupid!”

Reminds me of those who write “…etc. etc.”
    A bit redundant redundant ” width=”19″ height=”19″ alt=”wink” style=”border:0;” />

  3. Safari is a nice browser, but it often fails to display pages that use Java. Symptom is that the window opens but most or all of it is blank whote space. When I choose Debug>Open Page With>Camino, Camino displays the window properly. So, what is Safari’s problem? Anyone have an answer?

  4. Firefox is quite good, but…

    1) Safari is faster
    2) Safari works with Keychain and syncs all of my online passwords with .Mac
    3) Safari’s bookmark system is vastly superior
    4) Pithhelmet for Safari is a better ad blocker than Ad Block for Firefox
    5) Inquisitor for Safari ROCKS!

  5. FYI: Last year, Apple Inc. reluctantly allowed the iTunes group inside Apple to use Firefox instead of Safari. The users claimed that it simply worked better for their purposes… Whether this is still the case, I do not know.

Hopefully, Safari will be able to incorporate what ever it is that users liked better with the Firefox experience.

Personally, I use both. I have found that video seems to stream better over Firefox on older Macs. As a long time Apple stock holder, I want to support Apple in every way by using and promoting as many of their products as possible, provided that they are as good or better than other solutions.

Verdict? Take your pick, they’re both great, just different.

  6. Yeah, but Safari won’t even work on ebay anymore. When the hell is this going to get fixed…I have to use Firefox.

Not true. I buy and sell on eBay and visit the site quite regularly. Safari is my only web browser.

  7. Safari’s number one missing feature, IMHO, is a simple search function. Number two would be a better way to add new bookmarks. Firefox’s approach is much easier to use.

Firefox, though it has many nice features, will always be an ugly duckling (no matter what kind of skin you dress it up with) until it finally becomes a true OS X-native app from the ground up.

  8. alansky,

To search any web page loaded in Safari:

    1) Start typing and you’ll be directed to the word on the page. Your typing will be shown in the status bar, lower left.

    or

    2) Hit CMD-F and type in what your searching for

    m

  9. Late to the party…

    “DeppityBob,
Are you using a Mac or a PC? The autofill feature works fine for me on Firefox.

    Running a Mac, of course.”

I’m using a Mac, of course. Maybe they updated the autofill since the last time I used it?

MW: The “fact” is, it still beats IE!
