“Vista only hit the shelves yesterday, but Microsoft’s new operating system has already sent shockwaves through the PC retail industry,” Tracey Cooper writes for The Register. “Want to get your hands on an Acer desktop bundled with a copy of ‘Genuine MS Windows Vista Premium?'”
MacDailyNews Take: We’d rather undergo a lobotomy performed by Anna Nicole Smith with a rusty corkscrew, but thanks for asking.
Cooper continues, “Get prepared to fork out a wallet-thrashing £9,999 for the pleasure, if prices down at PC World are anything to go by: With Vista retailing at only £219.99, the addition of the operating system has pushed prices sky high with the desktop itself ringing in at a whopping £9779.01 [US$12,667.73].”

OK, confused a little here. Is it the young skinny Ann Nicole? The later with the weight? Or the skinny again? And will she be topless and gagged?
yasss first post!! vista sucks!
My friend:
In the UK you get hald a pound for a dollar;
In America it costs $2 dollars to buy a UK pound;
9,779.01 british pounds is actually just about US$ 19,500 american dollars.
Think about.
In your motherland. In the hip British Island —
— in the United Kindow . . .
Real people with real I.T. jobs pay US$ 19,500 for a computer capable of running Windows Vista.
We love Windows.
We hate Apple.
Long Live the Queen
and our overlord Steve Ballmer.
P.S.: Not even the Beatles like Apple.
I don’t know if they checked the prices before or after the systems hit the shelves, but right before the store opened up on Tuesday to sell those new Windows Vista machines, the prices were all set at $9,999.99 at Office Depot. The reason? So people could not get a jump on prices before the machines actually hit the shelves. It almost sounds to me like this is a similar situation. And this so-called journalist saw this and immediately reported, rather than doing a bit of research first. Modern journalism is such a joke.
Check out dulls pricing for customizing a pc, it actually costs more to load xp. About $50 us and marked very clearly “dell recomends WinXp” There is no recomendation for vista
This is your year Apple don’t blow it… Lick-em with Leopard.
Typo or not, Windows Vista will require a higher end computer to run adequately. That means PC’s in the price range of current mid-range Macs, like the iMac and MacBook Pro. So no more super-cheapo $399 systems, if you want to run Windows Vista in all its “glory.” Apple, on the other hand, can push the price of the low-end Mac down by $100 and have a sub-$500 computer that can run the Mac OS X Leopard fully enabled. Such a system may be a future Mac mini, or a new system that evolves out the iPhone technology.
It looks like Microsoft has given Apple a huge edge in the future low-end personal computer market, by releasing Windows Vista with its high-end system requirements.
I’m looking forward to running Vista… on my MBP 17″ Core 2 Duo G.
G is the version that has N, but is locked by Apple.
Unlike most, I love trying out the latest and greatest. I’d be snobby if I just wrote it off without knowing much about it. So… Vista here I come. Well, maybe in a couple months when I can grab one of the OEM versions. The price is too high for me. 🙁
Zune Tang, Zune Tang??? Are you there Zune Tang?
Zune Tang told me just this morning that he would willingly pay $20,000 for a Dell running Vista. Apparently its the only operating system with parental controls. I heard Bill say so on the tele just the other day.
You gotta expect to pay for all that fabulous WOW factor innovation stuff.
Actually, I heard Bill is backing down on that statement now. He is now saying its the first operating system since 2005 with parental controls. Or was it the last operating system with parental controls. He seemed a bit flustered there for a minute. Perhaps he meant panty control. No, that’s a feature of Zune music transmission. Squirtability. Yes thats it, Squirtability is the new panty control for Windows Vista/Zune integration.
Actually I think its all a lot of nonsense. I havent seen Vista yet. Someone said it was like a pig with lipstick on. Now that would be cool. A made-up pig. WOW WOW WOW WOW. They really know how to get you excited over there in Seattle don’t they…
And, Gee, they must have made an absolute KILLING in London. With all those people queued up to buy Vista at midnight on launch date. So many people. Bill was there. Steve was there too I hear. And Steve’s Mum. A veritable busload of people arrived apparently. Some bus with Seattle plates showed up and all these people poured out and stood in the pouring rain pointing little brown boxes at each other and going WOW WOW WOW WOW.
There were a few empty seats on the bus though I noticed. Still we won’t say much about that. Perhaps they needed the space for all their Vista packages.
A pig with lipstick. Now that really is innovative. Who would have thought of that. WOW. I mean WOW WOW WOW!!!
I’m an Aussie so that works out around 30 grand. Suddenly a Mac tower with 16 gig of ram seems reachable.
Man if this is true, and Mac/PC prices are starting to level out, then Apple better get some games on the boil pronto.
I’ve got a G3 I bought in 2000/2001. It runs Tiger like a dream. No upgrading of ram, nothing. Ok now is probably the time to upgrade my machine. Only because they are now intel and a lot of the older software will need to be UB.
But it’s funny how one of the first reasons people scorn Apple is because of the price. At work I use a G4 500mHz (the first G4 they made) it’s still ticking today after almost 10 years. All my PC co workers have to be upgraded every four years to keep up. WTF? You get what you pay for. Hopefully the tide is turning.
Here’s a radical idea, Apple should GIVE at least one Mac to every school in, ok not the world so let’s say the US, that will give the kids a chance to at least play with the thing and open people eys a bit. Oh and don’t forget the Mac will run Vista as well, if you realy need, for a lot cheaper.
@TowerTone… Too funny. I would rather see a young skinny Anna Nicoleand a-bottle-full-in-front-of-me than have a full-frontal-lobotomy, Hic….
The Register a sleazy online rag
…”Get prepared to fork out a wallet-thrashing £9,999 for the pleasure, if prices down at PC World are anything to go by:(SHE MAKES IT SOUNDS AS IF SHE GOT OFF HER ASS AND WENT DOWN TO THE SHOP … NOT !!) With Vista retailing at only £219.99, the addition of the operating system has pushed prices sky high with the desktop itself ringing in at a whopping £9779.01 [US$12,667.73].” —–
So minus the £219.99 for Vista it’s a bargin at £9559.02 [$18,532.07]
Typo.

At work we trashed all our G3s when the G4s came out. You’ve gotta be dreamin’ to say it runs OSX like a dream. Do some benchmarks and get back to us on that. Boot time? Apps open at once? Copy/burn CDs & DVDs…. even basic things would be hard to call this a dream machine…
On a personal note, I’ve got a super old Gateway 2000 – circa 1994 – that runs XP pretty well. It was relegated to surfing the web and word processing a couple of years ago. I’ve since given it to my niece for her education programs…. still runs.
A dream machine this 1994 box is not, but it still works as does your year 2000 Mac.

MPC guy,
my wife uses a 2000 iMac G3/400 DVSE, MacOS 10.4.8, on a daily basis. It’s not screaming fast, mind you, but completely usable.
A 2000 iBook G3/300 is a different story, due to the small hard drive, limited memory and lack of fast interfaces. Still, it’s in use.
But a real G3, aka Tuppermac, at least if it’s ≥350 MHz, has no problems at all, running with the Tiger. You can max out the RAM at 1024 MB and put in an 80-120 GB hard drive. Also, most G3s can be tweaked to run a bit faster by simple re-jumpering of the processor. No, I wouldn’t exchange my C2D iMac against a Tuppermac, but you can still get work done on those nine-year-old machines. Boot time is under one minute; not as fast as an Intel Mac, but okay. And here’s the best: Panther will still support the G3s! Go try Vista on a Pentium III!
Yeah Ok not exactly a dream compared to the current models but I’m basically saying the thing still works pretty well and does all things mentioned albeit a lot slower. The fact that it runs Tiger at all is great.
It seems that the gullibility of some knows no bounds.
Hagar…..
Good for you. It’s awesome when we get so much life out of our machines. I love that mine have lasted me so long as well – whether a PC or a Mac.
I believe the dude your defending was referring to his machines running like a dream. To which I replied he’s got the be dreaming himself!!!
You said I should try Vista on my PIII. I don’t really see the point, as I’ve got a 17″ 2.33 GHz Core 2 Duo G computer to use. Why even bother trying to use a 12 year old machine with the latest and greatest!
And…
Are you really suggesting I steal back the computer from my niece? That’s just mean, bud!!! MEANIE!!!
Ralp….
Yeah… I love using Tiger as well myself as well.
Whenever I use XP, I find myself missing so many things about OSX – Expose, Spotlight, etc.
Anyway…. apologies if I came off too harsh.
G’Day to you man!
