Vista sends PC prices sky high

“Vista only hit the shelves yesterday, but Microsoft’s new operating system has already sent shockwaves through the PC retail industry,” Tracey Cooper writes for The Register. “Want to get your hands on an Acer desktop bundled with a copy of ‘Genuine MS Windows Vista Premium?'”

MacDailyNews Take: We’d rather undergo a lobotomy performed by Anna Nicole Smith with a rusty corkscrew, but thanks for asking.

Cooper continues, “Get prepared to fork out a wallet-thrashing £9,999 for the pleasure, if prices down at PC World are anything to go by: With Vista retailing at only £219.99, the addition of the operating system has pushed prices sky high with the desktop itself ringing in at a whopping £9779.01 [US$12,667.73].”

  1. that makes choosing a computer easier, if cost is the deciding factor. Macs = value for money and exquisite. PC = Expensive and nasty. Has Microsoft shot themselves in the foot, will Gates and Bullmore finally be seen for what they truly are, not to mention liars.

  2. I just tried to configure a machine on the UK apple online store, and at £9,428, the specs are:

    Two 3.0GHz Dual-Core Intel Xeon
    16GB (8 x 2GB) RAM
    NVIDIA Quadro FX 4500 512MB, Stereo 3D (2 x dual-link DVI)
    750GB 7200-rpm Serial ATA 3Gb/s
    750GB 7200-rpm Serial ATA 3Gb/s
    One 16x SuperDrive
    Apple Keyboard & Mighty Mouse
    Mac OS X
Apple Cinema HD Display (30″ flat panel)
    Five USB ports
    Two FireWire 400 ports
    Two FireWire 800 ports

Something seems to be way off in the pricing of that PC.

  3. Doesn’t look like a joke to me. I see no disclaimer at the end saying anything about it not being serious. Whatever as I’m like MDN and wouldn’t buy it anyways at any price. If anything that will give Apple another point to make people make the switch. The one point that kept people away from Macs might actually have them buying them now if PC prices are going higher because of Vista’s high prices. Microsoft is greedy so I wouldn’t put it past them to charge much higher prices to the OEM manufacturers who bundle Windows with there systems.

  4. John: Its The Register and also a British site. The Brits don’t generally need disclaimers to tell people they’re not being entirely serious, they just get it.

Trust me: The 9,999 pound computer is a mistake on the part of PC World.

  5. did a quicky price check with full premium business whatever VISTA machine (closest to Tiger) at Dell. $2.8K vs $2.3K for equivalent-ish Mac.

Not included of course is the the new adware/spyware/antivirus crap still to bought…..

  6. A lobotomy performed by Anna Nicole Smith with a rusty corkscrew???

Well, that girl doesn’t know how to use a corkscrew. In fact she doesn’t know what a corkscrew is. And I doubt she can perform an amateur lobotomy even reading some books. Hell, I don’t think she knows what a book is, and, just in case she knew, I doubt she knows how to read.

The only thing she knows is how to count….money, that is (wonder how far can she count)

  7. I’ve seen the first wave of Dell PC ads. I see in the banner “Dell recommends Vista Business edition”. One scans the specs of the obviously low-balled desktop or laptop to see “Vista Home Basic” is bundled. So if you want a more “serious” edition, prepare to pay much more. Apple does it much simpler: Workstation or Server. Life’s too short…

  8. Here’s the link for Gates on The Daily Show:

It’s not really worth watching though. Apple and Mac OS X never come up in the interview.

If you read the comments on below on that same YouTube page, you’ll see some astronomically ignorant idiots defending Gates. Such as:

“PC’s are for people in the real world who need their computer to work like everyone else’s. Macs are for nerds that just want to be different.”

    and…

“If it weren’t for Gates you’d all be writing this on paper.”

That last one is my favorite. I have trouble believing that the philistine that wrote it can possibly be over 12 years old.

  9. Hey Jon Stewart, what was that all about? I was watching it and couldn’t figure out why he bounced like that.

Anyone notice there’s an ad for Vista right here next to this comment box? At least there is here…peculiar
