I agree. Showing a hip teen guy using the iPhone to video-chat with another hip teen girl on a MacBook using the iSight camera via free home WiFi would have brought iChat and video conferencing to the masses.

Apple still needs Windows XP and iPhone versions of iChat. Despite that, by teen kids are all dropping MSN for Skype now they all have broadband and web-cams, plus the Skype emoticons are better and Skype crashes less. The conversations are just as dull.

You, calling anyone a “condescending bastard,” are typical of the MDN blinder-wearing crowd.

You want condescending? Other than the iPod Hi-Fi, I can’t think of two products I am less interested in owning than the AppleTV and the iPhone.

    Grotesquely over-priced crap.

Actually, the above remark isn’t “condescending.” It is the truth. Apple’s string of successes ended with the so-called “Hi-Fi.” “Apple, Inc.” has been transformed into a greedy, over-priced producer of hyped-up techno junk.

They used to make interesting computers…

    avail to watch?

  4. How can anyone be sure this is a full version of OSX? From the pictures I saw, it looked like embedded versions of the main applications. If it is truly a generic install of OSX, how come you can’t exit that glitzy menu crap, and get to the dock and regular OSX desktop? I don’t like the idea of having to purchase this device solely for use as a telephone. Yeah the feature is nice, but you should be free to purchase and use this device as a tablet pc, an mp3 player, a movie player, or a PDA if you wish, without having to commit to a service contract for yet another phone service. I understand that the shape and size make it perfectly usable as a cell phone, but I don’t understand why it needed to be powered by OSX, just seems like overkill to me, for something being branded and used primarily as a cellphone. I hope Apple will allow people to buy these and use them as more than just phones.

  5. Nobody can be sure that it is a full version of OS X. In fact, chances are, it’s a light version. Why would you need DVD Player, iDVD, iMovie etc. on a palmtop computer? However, it is still Mac OS X. Steve answered that very question and showed a slide why Mac OS X is the brain of iPhone. It has got sync, network, multitasking, power management in the foundation and on its top, it has CoreAnimation, CoreAudio, CoreGraphics and developers should be able to easily create killer apps with Cocoa. Apple doesn’t have to reinvent the wheel. It may look like it’s overkill now, but wait until developers start to customize apps for it.

As to why you can’t turn off the interface, iPhone is marketed as a consumer product. It’s not designed as miniaturized desktop computer which would make things complex anyway. The screen is only 3.5″, the Dock would look like sh!t on it especially if some real estate is taken to provide the virtual keyboard. And your rant about using the device solely for telephone, are you kidding? It’s still an iPod and it still works as an MP3 player, camera, photo slideshow, movie player and PDA. Those features work without needing buy into a mobile phone service.

So much for your sense of smell. I own/operate a audio recording & multimedia firm. I’ve been a Mac owner since March 1984. My occupations have overlapped or dovetailed with Apple since 1982.

I love my iPod. I think the “Hi-Fi” is an insult. I think the low-quality music and low-resolution video available from the iTunes store are a complete rip-off. Anyone foolish enough to buy a movie from iTunes (rather than buy the DVD) deserves to watch their lower-than-cable quality movie on their hi-def screen.

And I don’t have/won’t have a cell phone. I prefer to move human evolution forward rather than backward.

You’re one of those Apple asskissers, aren’t ya? I can sense your lack of objectivity a mile away.
