Planned home PC purchases surge, Apple Mac looks primed to benefit

“Good news for personal computer makers: Consumers plan to buy a lot of new PCs in the next six months. And Apple Computer (AAPL) could be one of the big beneficiaries,” Patrick Seitz reports for Investor’s Business Daily.

Seitz reports, “The IBD/TIPP Home Computer Purchase Outlook index, which measures buyer intent, jumped 17% to 23 in December from November. The index ranges from zero to 100; the higher the index score, the greater the likelihood of PC purchasing in the next six months. The newest figure marks the second highest reading for the index since January 2004. Only July’s 23.4 was higher during the three-year period.”

Seitz reports, “For its latest survey, TechnoMetrica conducted a random telephone poll of 1,001 U.S. households Dec. 4 to 10. Among households surveyed in December, 27% said they were likely to buy a new PC within the next six months. That’s up from 22% in November. About 28% of likely PC buyers said they planned to get a new computer within the next three months. The majority, 65%, planned to get a new PC in four to six months. The rest were unsure when they’d buy.”

“Interest in Apple’s Macintosh computers is surging… Apple has gotten a lot of mileage from its switch to Intel (INTC) processors and the new ability of its computers to run both the Mac and Windows operating systems. Apple also has drawn kudos for the stylish designs and unique features of its Mac desktops and notebooks, analysts say,” Seitz reports.

Seitz reports, “Dell was the most preferred brand among likely PC buyers this month, with 43% of votes. Hewlett-Packard (HPQ) was No. 2, with 13% picking its HP and Compaq brands. But Apple was a close third with 12% of likely buyers. That’s the highest brand preference rating for Apple that the IBD/TIPP poll has recorded since TechnoMetrica began tracking the brand in July 2003. Dell was stronger with laptop PC buyers, garnering 47% of likely buyers in the product category. HP was slightly stronger with desktop buyers, at 15% across its two brands. Apple was stronger with notebook PC buyers, with 15% picking Macs.”

“Among likely PC buyers, 53% said they planned to get a laptop or notebook PC. Notebook demand has outpaced desktop PC demand for 11 straight months, according to the IBD/TIPP survey,” Seitz reports.

MacDailyNews Take: Buying an OS-limited Dell, HP or any other PC is a ludicrous choice when Apple Macs will run everything. As always, it’ll take the great unwashed quite a while to get the message; that they’re still parroting “Dell” in their pavlovian responses is a tribute to Dell (and Microsoft’s) marketing. However, slowly, but surely, the times they are a-changin’ – for the better.

Come gather ’round people
Wherever you roam
And admit that the waters
Around you have grown
And accept it that soon
You’ll be drenched to the bone.
If your time to you
Is worth savin’
Then you better start swimmin’
Or you’ll sink like a stone
For the times they are a-changin’.

The line it is drawn
The curse it is cast
The slow one now
Will later be fast
As the present now
Will later be past
The order is
Rapidly fadin’.
And the first one now
Will later be last
For the times they are a-changin’.

  1. It’s hardly surprising they ‘think Dell’ when every newspaper, every Sunday supplement, has Dell brochures falling out.

And the prices! They seem so cheap! Why go anywhere else?!

Seems to me that when Apple’s ready, it could and should do some of this too.

  2. Now, let’s just imagine that Apple releases a product or two that really starts to turn heads. The iPod has been quite a phenomenon, but there are SO many directions Apple can bloom.

Apple adoption will accelerate. Can’t wait.

  3. You seen any photos of Zimmerman lately? eh? Regardless of those cute reversal predictions of his … he ain’t suddenly reversing from old to young … and neither am I.

Just hurry the fark up Apple, will ya please?

  4. R: It has been a fun ride. I switched over about the same time you did – just after Steve-o came back.

I’ve produced 2 TV shows that caused the local cable company to restructure their pricing for shooting commercials and infomercials. I did both on my (as Mr. Haney from “Green Acres” would say) ‘genuine G4 867 Quicksilver love machine – direct from Cupertino – land of the silicone wonder kid.’ I made both shows at home using my Mac and a Canon GL2 camera.

Both got Neilson ratings. I’m not trumpeting my own horn because neither show got me anywhere that made me rich or famous, but it meant that I could do what used to only be done by companies with big studios and expensive equipment.

I say this just because Apple changed my life. Oh, And I love the anticipation of new and exciting products.

The unwashed masses will take a long time, but hopefully they will get here.

Go Apple! BTW, I still only have my G4 tower. I can’t wait to get a new MacBook.

    Oh, and Merry Christmas! ” width=”19″ height=”19″ alt=”raspberry” style=”border:0;” />

  5. What kind of lame survey doesn’t even report the margin of error (i.e., standard error)? The change from last month is almost certainly too small to be outside the margin of error (so, it’s not meaningful). But the accompanying graphic shows that the trend over the last year is clearly positive and large of enough to be real.
Time to buy more Apple stock! It’s cheap right now…

  6. IOW, 12-15% market share for Apple going forward. How sweeeet it is!

I hope Vista doesn’t derail the momentum. The uniformed sheep with think it is the greatest thing ever.

Until they discover their new “Vista Ready” Christmas PCs can’t actually run Vista…

Until they find out all their reason-for-owning-a-PC apps break under Vista…

Until they get hit with malware, just as before…

Until they figure out what a shitload of empty promises MS serves, and how greatly MS profits off them..

Eventually even sheep learn to run from the wolves.

  7. I have to wonder how much of the Dell market we should actually want. Ever talk to some of these die-hard Dell buyers? They don’t really get computers. They’re the type whose computers never work correctly, but they don’t know the difference. Schooling the pathetically computer incompetant would be a miserable experience.

  8. The “study” says 15% are interested in Macs.
What percentage of those will have the guts to slap down their cash and take a Mac home? I know quite a few people who SAY that they really WANT a Mac, but are afraid to take the plunge.

After all, we ARE talking about people who are used to being told what to do, see, think, like, buy…
    Windows is the only OS.
Office is the only “real” business software suite.
Macs are toys that are only good for graphics.
If it’s not HARD to do, it’s not real work.
Viruses, spyware, crashes and malware are an integral part of the computing experience…

We’ll see what the real numbers work out to be.

Relax Jatt. Most of us get the point. Some folks around here are bit too literal minded…

  9. “The slow one now
    Will later be fast”

How right MDN, we’re all waiting for Apple to ship Mac Pros with dual quad core processors and better video cards.

A universal binary version of Photoshop and Office wouldn’t hurt either.
