Apple today debuted the company’s new .Mac webmail. It’s got a whole new look, updated features, and it’s available today. With its smart use of the latest web technology, the new .Mac webmail will remind you of the Mail application on your desktop.
In the new .Mac webmail, you’ll find:
• Drag-and-drop functionality
• A message pane
• Quick Reply
• Address Book integration
• Message previews
• Message flagging
• Keyboard shortcuts
Unlike most webmail services, Apple’s .Mac webmail uses IMAP. So you can rest easy knowing that your .Mac mail will be just as you left it, no matter where you log on next.
To get the most out of the new .Mac webmail, make sure you’re using the recommended version of Safari, Firefox or Internet Explorer:
Mac OS X: Safari 1.2 or later, Firefox 1.0.4 or later
Windows: Firefox 1.0.4 or later, Internet Explorer 6 or later
Then just sign in and get started here.

MDN should change the link they are offering:
FROM http://www.mac.com/WebObjects/Webmail.woa/
TO http://webmail.mac.com
This will take care of the lock-up problem that many of the readers are experiencing when they follow MDN’s link to the new webmail.
At the same time, Apple can look into resolving why MDN’s link causes the lock-up problem.

If you click new, dont type anything and click save as draft you get an error message “TypeError – Undefined value” and I don’t see a way to get out of creating a message.

Works great for me. No problems and I really like what I see. For me .Mac provides a great and simple solution to synching several computers so I have the same address book, bookmarks etc.
One thing I didn’t see though… the Address Book on .Mac still doesn’t retain the group affiliation that exists in the desktop Address Book. That really limits the usefulness of the .Mac address book for me.
All in all though I am happy with .Mac. I am glad to see that Apple is taking an interest in making it better because it could be so much more!
I agree with macromancer. Popups with audio are despicable intrusions on our privacy and work flow, especially when they manifest while we’re at work. The “congratulations, you have just won” series is among the worst. Another was from a site called Shmooze with the sound of a cow going M-O-O-O! They must have gotten too many complaints because the latter is no more. Hopefully browser developers will come up with a way to block this trash.
What is the deal about neglecting to mention other browsers? Firefox is a relative Johnny-come-lately compared to Camino, OmniWeb, even Opera. Did they not test or optimize for other browsers? I would expect others to work. If not, Apple should have fixed it. If so, Apple should have listed them. Does Firefox on the Mac pay a fee to Apple for that? I think it’s insulting to those developers who were steady in developing alternate browser support for the Mac.
Same as GW3. I can log in, but the welcome screen wouldn’t go away, until I refreshed the page. Then I couldn’t select and read any mail. Dragging only selects text.
After choosing the 3 pane view in preferences, I could see a preview pane, however, could not preview any mail.
I have used webmail.mac.com as well as the other link provided above.
After trying to create a new folder, the ‘done’ button didn’t do anything.. Refreshing the page made the window go away, and I now had my new folder, but I was back to the 2 pane view.
Thanks Kerry,
Works for me now after going through Apple to get to .Mac.
Overall the new feature is good and I’m sure it will improve. It certainly beats anything out there for consistency between a mail app vs web access.
Works fine with Camino ver. 1.0.3. Why no ability to filter spam like with Gmail?
I use .mac because I feel as though I am contributing further to a company that I like. Sure, there are better email clients out there, but none that are Apple hosted!
I also agree with macromancer. These audio pop under ads are horrible. But I blame MDN just as much as the companies that make them. MDN isn’t forced to use those kinds of ads–they choose to. We can choose to boycott the companies the ads are for, but we can also choose to boycott MDN for allowing them! Enough already.
I am not getting any pop under ads. What browser are you guys using? You can also add clicksynergy.com and others of their ilk to your hosts file and point them to 127.0.0.1, and the ads will be replaced with a genereic error message.
