Apple today announced that Dr. Eric Schmidt, chief executive officer of Google, was elected to Apple’s board of directors at their meeting today. Eric also sits on Google’s board of directors and Princeton University’s board of trustees.
“Eric is obviously doing a terrific job as CEO of Google, and we look forward to his contributions as a member of Apple’s board of directors,” said Steve Jobs, Apple’s CEO, in the press release. “Like Apple, Google is very focused on innovation and we think Eric’s insights and experience will be very valuable in helping to guide Apple in the years ahead.”
“Apple is one of the companies in the world that I most admire,” said Eric Schmidt in the release. “I’m really looking forward to working with Steve and Apple’s board to help with all of the amazing things Apple is doing.”
Eric Schmidt joined Google from Novell, where he was chairman and CEO. At Google, Eric shares responsibility for Google’s day-to-day operations, and is focused on building the corporate infrastructure needed to maintain Google’s rapid growth while ensuring that quality remains high and product development times are kept to a minimum. Eric’s 20 years of experience as an Internet strategist, entrepreneur and technologist give him a well-seasoned perspective which perfectly complements Google’s needs as a young and rapidly growing company with a unique corporate culture.
Prior to joining Novell, Eric was chief technology officer at Sun Microsystems, Inc., where he led the development of Java, Sun’s platform-independent programming technology, and defined Sun’s Internet software strategy. Google produced Picasa, which I feel is actually superior to iPhoto in a few ways. For one, it produces much nicer looking photo web pages with css. Hopefully iPhoto can incorporate some of these features.

What an incredible resume this Dr. Eric Schmidt has. He must have incredible innate intelligence, very good work habits and good people skills. I think I met him at a Christmas party in Menlo Park in about 1986. He explained to me the idea of a mouse to control a computer. Even I could see that was a good idea.
I have gone nowhere in the mean time and he is on the Board of two of the most amazing companies I know of. The person who hosted that party? He was a young computer science prof. who is now the President of Stanford University. There was so much staring me right in the face in those years and I did not have the vision to see it.
Time to buy some more shares! It is all I can do.

I would not think anything happens to Apple without Steve’s shares voting to approve. Would Steve want to merge Apple and Google? I think a strategic alliance is more likely.

I never agued against the “cherry picked” facts presented in the film, only Gore’s interpretation of them. Al Gore’s understanding, perception, and explanation of the data that he chose to present prove that his motives are dubious at best and duplicitous at worst.
maczealot- Don’t even bother. As soon as you get into a debate on the issue, you automatically lose, because Gore’s views are the same views held by the scientific community.
The documentary is factual. In terms of accuracy (which INCLUDES HIS INTERPRETATION), it was virtually flawless!

I’m a climatologist, trust me, you can find a few scientist that will tell you anything. There are 10 of thousands of scientists who find much of the movie nothing but propaganda. Try not to drink the left kool-aid, and before you think I’m a right winged idiot, I don’t drink that kool-aid either. True science is a-political. The truth in all scientific discovery has been discovered by the few the dare venture into area that most find wrong, current global warming thinking falls into that category. It saddens me up when people ignore the simple fact of global warming based on their personal dislike for Al Gore.
Al Gore doesn’t claim to have discovered anything in the film; he merely gathers the scientific information that is available and puts the pieces together. His sources, sited throughout the film, include the US government and the international scientific community. The only scientists that opposed the facts stated in the film were clearly shown to be under the payroll of commercial entities with conflicting interests such as the oil industry.
Had some raving idiot freak hosted the film, the facts would still have hit me. Heck, even if President Bush had hosted the film I would have STILL sat up and taken notice of the facts.
Gore is only suggesting that people make attempts at reducing their CO2 emissions – for the sake of our future generations, for millions of people who live in coastal towns that risk being submersed, and so on.
and by the way – caring about the environment is bigger than politics. If I was a Republican, I would still care about my kids and the world they will live in. At no time in the film does Gore suggest that voting Democrat will solve global warming – only reducing CO2 emissions will.

I hope Dr. Eric Schmidt can bring some networking savvy to Apple. I think the iLife apps are good but suffer from a fatal flaw. They seem to be designed for an individual user. Allowing multiple users to use the same photo library or music library should be easy. Its not in iLife. Allowing others in your work or house to listen to your music playlists shouldn’t require your copy of iTunes to be running or for you to be logged in. This sharing should be done at a level lower than the application. Apple needs to put Bonjour at the operating system level, not the application level.

I just have to say, this is one of the stupidest things I’ve ever read. How is it “daring” to challenge something that most think is wrong? What kind of “truths” are you thinking of? Just off the top of my head: Copernicus, du Chatelet, Einstein, Bohr, all challenged commonly accepted concepts about physics and developed crucial scientific principles. And a large swath of scientific discovery is through very mundane research into well-established fields of science.

The Earth is not round or spherical, it is a disc and the universe moves around it – not the Earth around the sun. We see only what we want to see. It is called projection and we make things what we make them. What happens is what happens and no matter if you think Global Warming is real or not, the majority belief will make the future. Let ignorance and arrogance guide us. We have lived that way since day one. Besides, what we really need to fear is Apple becoming MS.
