Liberal blogger on switch from Windows to Mac: I’m sold

“A few months ago I told you how, after two decades in the PC universe, I was considering buying a Mac. The immediate trigger was a really bad experience with a new Gateway computer. But there was a broader dissatisfaction with PCs and interest in trying out Macs. Also, in the field I work in — journalism and web design — Macs are fairly dominant. So I got a Mac Mini to test the water and a nice Mac Cinema display, figuring that if I liked Macs the display would migrate with me when I got a more powerful Mac system,” Josh Marshall writes for Talking Points Memo.

“So I wanted to take a moment and report back on what my experiences have been,” Marshall writes. “Basically, I’m sold. I’ve been using a PC at home and a Mac at work for several months now. And I just prefer using the Mac. A lot. Some of it is simple ease of use, the ‘it just works factor’. It runs with few or no problems. And not having to worry about computer viruses is nice. I’m also doing a lot more working with video… When I think about it, it’s hard for me to point to any one thing that I prefer about the Mac. I’m a pretty adept PC user. And I’m usually able to fix or workaround whatever problems crop up. I think what it comes down to for me is basically three things.”

Marshall’s list:
Quality: Quality of the physical product and its integration with the operating system itself, which also seems light years ahead of Windows. The thing’s just made really well and it shows
Integration: It’s hard to point to any one thing that makes too big a difference. But they build on each other. And all told, they lead to a more pleasant and productive work experience. The new Macs have a suite of programs (iLife) for organizing and editing your photos, videos, music, etc. Amazingly powerful and well-designed. Just right there, ready to use, perfect. If you’re working with graphics and video and anything to do with design, it’s just not even close.
Aesthetics and It Just Works: I like the way the Mac looks and the physical presentation on the screen is vastly nicer than on a PC. Also, things just work a whole lot easier. I plug things in and they work.

  1. Tony D’Annunzio: Another Rob Roy, Bishop?
Bishop: You never ask a navy man if he’ll have another drink, because it’s nobody’s goddamned business how much he’s had already.
Judge Smails: Wrong, you’re drinking too much your Excellency.
Bishop: Excellency, fiddlesticks, my name’s Fred and I’m a man, same as you.
    Judge Smails: You’re not a man, you’re a bishop, for God’s sakes.
    Bishop: There is no God…

  2. Of course he likes Mac toys, he’s a liberal, gay, homo, apple sack muncher!

Mac users need to stop guzzling man pudding. Mac users need to stop knee-jerking and circle-jerking. Mac users need to stop the tree-hugging. Mac users need to stop chowing down the baby batter. Mac users need to stop frequenting the bath houses. Mac users need to stop swallowing man sausage. No more packing of fudge, you H-mo gay fags!

Windows rules and when Apple dies, I’ll be happy! I hope you gay Commie Mac fags cry forever once they finally turn out the lights for good in Cupertino!

  3. uh huh, liberal that figures.

nobody but a homo lefty uses macs anyway, he is right at home.

too bad he follows the sheep like all liberals instead of doing what everyone knows is best.

really they only want to change to say they changed something, its never for the better, just like going mac.

only the quality thing is bull, my friend’s dell is built like a tank, not all a flimsy thin apple thing.

liberals and conservatives both use macs, someone is going to say, but conservatives use them to show off the wealth they earned by hard work, thats different from just sticking it to microsoft because your a bleeding heart blogger.

anyway, who cares what a blogger uses, my dell has 10x the gamez.

  4. Liberals tend to mean homosexuals, which tend to like eyecandy products like Mac’s.

Of course BustingtheSkullsofIdiots doesn’t have a sex, it’s genderless. Hairless too, with blue veins visible through it’s skin.

No eyebrows and only three toes.

  5. Microsoft could change their logo to a swastika. Then Ron and 7up can show their true colors at last. As Brown Shirt Fascists.

But then Ron and 7up probably don’t need to wait for Microsoft to adopt what they already have adopted — long ago.

  6. The problem is there are two ron’s on this site. Ron, the normal, everyday mac user… and ron, the homophobe flame baiting mac basher.

I’m guessing that this iteration of ron is the backwoods, deliverance loving ron who squeals like a pig for his cousin/brother/daddy and actually likes living in a shack in the Appalachian mountains.

I mean, give him a break folks. It’s gotta be confusing when your mom calls you over and you don’t know if you’re gonna get a hug or a feel up.

Besides, it’s not his fault that he’s accessing the internet from a pentium 2 machine with a 14.4 modem connected to a dial up party line phone that gets interrupted every time his brother shoots off another toe “accidentally” and they call uncle fester to come over and sew it back on.

He’s obviously living in 1993 and hasn’t been connected to the news lately. Anybody that thinks Windows is gonna win in the long run is deluded.

MDN word is “one”… as in he’s just one more mac hating gay bashing flame baiter. Seems like redmond produces them faster than hackers create new windows viruses.

  7. I looked at his site and I wouldn’t call him a “liberal” blogger, just an “intelligent and reasonable” blogger.

Man, I wish the USA had an intelligent and reasonable president. That would be so awesome.

  8. Subtract gamers like 7up from the installed base of WinDoo users, and there will be only a couple of hundred people left.

Same goes for the Internet: Subtract those who use it exclusively for porn, and only the gamers will be left.

    QED.

  9. Ron, and 7up… 7up your bung? When an animal is threatened, the side effects are ugly. Both you guys need tranquilizers and a nice soft bed, surrounded by nice soft walls. The times, they are a changin’, get with it, or get the f__k out of the way.

  10. Oh, so you liked my Judge Smails comment earlier today, huh Ampar? Here’s another:

Judge Smails: You know, you should play with Dr. Beeper and myself. I mean, he’s been club champion for three years running and I’m no slouch myself.

Ty Webb: Don’t sell yourself short Judge, you’re a tremendous slouch.

  11. Yep lets just keep buying those OSX boxes full of security holes. Black Hat just showed how close to swiss cheese this crappy OS is. Apple is ripe for the picking and this will mark the end of anyone using these pseudo computers for anything but industrial art. We have all seen “it just works” over the last few days as Apple sends zillions of security updates to attempt to stop the bleeding of security problems on the macintosh.

Dell and HP are still the computers of choice for those with a brain. Any intelligent person knows that Windows is fast, secure and runs all the software you could ever want. Or you could stick with playing with iTunes and chess on your mac. Decisions…decisions…

  12. Damnit. I own a Mac, but yet I’m not a liberal, tree hugging hippie. I’m not gay, nor am I a Democrat either. Oh well, I’ll keep it anyway because Windows still sucks ass and always has.

Ok, enough sarcasm…and enough with the ignorant stereotyping already. Not all Mac users are liberal hippies and not all Windows users are Republicans. What computer someone uses doesn’t have a damn thing to do with anything political.

  13. Bloody hell – I’ve never seen so much blatant trolling going on in one place before! Good on you guys; have to admire your persistence, if nothing else. Of course, I say “guys” – but it’s probably just MacDude posting under his multiple aliases again…

  14. Re: Mac Realist,

with a screen name like that, it would seem you have an obsession.. perhaps a better name would be ‘Win Illusionist’…. or ‘Win lapdog’… or ‘Win bitch’, or ‘Win propagandist’, and then you can go post at WinDailyNews.com.

  15. Bush uses a Mac. Or has been pictured using a PowerBook while campaigning.

I was wondering … is there no way to test posters for sanity? Or to insure they are at least … fourteen? There are a couple of posters – like ron – who appear to be neither. You found a way to eliminate the machines, now lets shut down the more pathetic of the trolls.

There’s a new application that identifies the machines from which a poster posts and will block that machine, should the poster using it be blocked.

As a liberal, I believe in Freedom of Speech, but a) MDN is not a governmental body and b) some speech is obviously intended to be despicable. ron contributes nothing positive or useful to this space and ought to be sent away. Some children ought not be allowed to interact with adults. Some need to be spanked and sent to their room without supper.

    MW: way … ron? WAY!

  16. Guys, I just don’t get it. Did I miss something in the review that was Liberal bias? Maybe the title was to prepare some for the website it was on. We are all grown. We all have views. The review was enjoyable. Then someone has to draw first blood (humor not included) on politics. Boring.

  17. Hey guys (and gals)… I need some input.

I am a long time Windows PC user who is just fed up with the whole experience. The viruses and spyware (I still get some even though I have software and updated patches), the errors (even after 6 years of XP being out), the lack of entertainment, the lack of FUN. I also have no faith whatsoever in the next version of Windows – if it ever even comes out. I am in desperate need of change. I use a PC all day at work and DREAD using my computer at home…

After reading through this site for a few weeks, I definitely think that a Mac will be a breath of fresh air for me. Using a computer for simple home purposes should be fun, and the Mac seems to accomplish this.

I have decided on the 20″ iMac. The computer and the OS look AMAZING. The thing is, I read about all these new enhancements that may or may not be coming to Mac soon (new processors, etc.) and I wonder if I should hold off a little longer for the purchase.

I know, I know… I am a grown man who should be able to make his own decisions, but I was just hoping for any input or suggestions. Forgive my ignorance – hahaha!

    Thanks!

  18. Definitely wait, Shady. New stuff next week for sure,

Or, by a used machine for the near term if ya just gotta have it.

But only if you are a tree hugging, pot smoking, Jobs worshipping, communist loving friend of Judy like the rest of us ” width=”19″ height=”19″ alt=”wink” style=”border:0;” />

  19. Sheesh! What is it with you Americans? The trolls are out in force here today. As for the liberal/conservative rubbish, hey, it’s a computer guys! This is getting as bad as the HBO boards – really boring and no fun.

  20. Shady, I would wait. Most likely, next week, there will be updates and the iMac may be included. By then, you can either get a current iMac for cheaper, or a newer iMac for the same price as the previous models (but better!).

In either case, an iMac is a great choice and if you know any students, you may be able to get a student discount. wink wink.

Let us know what happens. Good luck!

  21. Shady,

Absolutely WAIT. It’ll only be a few weeks before the new 20″ iMacs will be shipping, most likely, and you’ll have a significantly faster machine than my 20″ Intel iMac. And mine is fast as hell.

Hope you love your new Mac as much as I do.

  22. I have had a new MB Pro for about 20 minutes now. The only thing that bothers me is that I can’t get my stuff transfered off my Windows machine fast enough to stop using it. I’ve been waiting to be able to make the switch, and the day is finally here. Just another liberal sharing his experience.

  24. Shady — I bought the 20″ iMac back in March — I was going on the road with our iBook and needed to leave a computer for my spouse to use — and I haven’t regretted it.

Chances are the new processors announced will be going in the MacPro desktops; I can’t really see Apple changing the lineup on the consumer iMacs this soon (they’ve only been out 7 months!).

But I’d wait a bit if I could, if only to make sure you don’t have to pay an extra $129 to upgrade to Leopard; see if Steve announces a timetable for Leopard introduction on Monday at WWDC. If it’s less than a couple of months, hold off and you’ll either be able to get a machine with Leopard preinstalled, or it’ll have Tiger but the Leopard disks will be included in the packaging (that’s what happened to me with my iBook). If it looks more like they’ll wait till MacWorld SF (early January), go ahead and get it now — that way you can at least get used to the interface in the meantime.

    Good luck and enjoy your new toy… ” width=”19″ height=”19″ alt=”smile” style=”border:0;” />

You must an amazing person, knowing exactly what everyone else believes, thinks, and does.

At least you are in your own world.

  27. Shady
I waited for years to get “the best mac I could afford” and stopped waiting when the Intel iMac came out. Happy am I. If I were looking now, I would grab a used eMac with at least a 1gig G4 (I got a 1.25gig w/DVD and 1gig ram off Ebay for$350.00 for my grandson) and get the 20″ iMac after Leopard comes out and new processors around 3/07 at latest. The eMac will be new enough to upgrade-or sell-and is great for kids. That would be my strategary. Naw, screw it, I couldn’t wait either. Good luck.

  28. Awesome guys… thanks a lot for your suggestions. I will definitely wait until after the WWDC for more information. I agree that it would be nice if I could wait for Leopard and save the $129. We shall see.

I am so sold already though, so I am getting one no matter what. It looks like I am another Windows convert. And believe me, those numbers are growing every day. It is nice to realize I have a choice…

    Thanks again!

  29. Hey Guys,

MDN is pushing your buttons. They know that it will get a lot more people commenting on this piece than a header saying “Another blogger switches to Mac”.

It’s one of the oldest tricks in journalism to have a sensational header to get people to read the story. It’s a grab! MDN quite often uses the tactics of newspaper tabloids where you assault your readers with a screaming header and then sit back and watch the punters bite.

The best thing to do is ignore the one word “liberal”, and then make a comment on the story content NOT the header. Better still don’t comment at all. That’ll get them to change quick smart. If they don’t then their advertisers will dump them.

MDN word “poor” as in poor journalism.

  30. Shady –

I have a 20″ imac 1.8 G5, so It’s already ‘dated’ as I can’t run (as if I really need to) any intel programs.
But in Sept it will be Two years (already!) and it has run flawlessly. My wife and two teenage daughter share it with all their Itunes, Videos, Ichatting and stuff And my wife and I do what 90% of people use a home computer for – Surf the Web, E-mail, Pay our Bills and manage our budget. With fast switching, and a 20″ inch screen, doesnt require any desktop or underdesk real-estate It is the perfect computer that has function flawlessly. The Local DSL guy I use must have some great spam blocking software, or he is just to small and under the radar for the Spam masters, and with junk mail I NEVER get spam…

Apple has made a computer to good, that it will probably be another 4-5 years before I have to buy another. And It will most assuredly be an Apple. I’ve owned five Apple computers since 1985 And have only had two hardware issues: My Apple IIc had a bad motherboard (replaced under warranty in one day) and my 1999 Imac 350 had the CD drive go bad. It was replace for less than $100 with one that allows me to play DVD (not an option on the $999 model when I purchased it).

So the short of it is – You won’t regret buying a Mac. Any Mac.

    I don’t give a fuck.

  32. One, I’m not a millionaire, not even close.
    Two, I’m a Republican.
    Three, I’m also gay.
Four, I have a few Mac’s, and am hoping to have enough money to live and still buy another one. ” width=”19″ height=”19″ alt=”grin” style=”border:0;” />
Five, I’m a cheerleader who happens to
Six, be majoring in Biology, French and minoring/[major(?)] in Mathematics.

Most important lesson of the day. Quit being bigots and making all these crazy stereotypes. Geez, I break most of them! I should know, I got people saying crap about cheerleaders left and right, people making claims about gay people left and right, and hellllooooo, did anyone notice that this is a Mac website?

O, and Ron, you get the point. STFU. ” width=”19″ height=”19″ alt=”grin” style=”border:0;” /> And everyone being just as stupid as Ron shuddup too.

    Second most important lesson of the day, Get A Nac it’s for everyone. ” width=”19″ height=”19″ alt=”grin” style=”border:0;” /> WWDC 2006 is on it’s way! w00t.

  33. Firstly I’m not gay no way near, a nice wet pussy for me to pound on will do nicely – thnx!

And as my name suggests I am a Mac user with 5 of them running and ready to use whenever I want.

On the subject of cheerleaders, the great Aaron Spelling (R.I.P) was once a cheerleader and yes on his passing recently his daughter Tori, okay not much to look at, inherited Aarons $1.2 Billion dollar house in LA.

So you homophobes up there Aaron was a really rich, gay guy with a family and just to top it off Tori is only one of his kids left from Aarons past marriages as Aaron also leaves a Son. As for Aaron’s political persuasion, who knows except for those who were closer to him – not me!

MDN: do yourself a favor and introduce a policy covering homophobia in that any posts that are exactly that, like Ron’s will be deleted. So Ron if you have something to say, which you have a right to, use it wisely and post something meaningful.

  34. It is amazing but surprising, every time I read about a switch story or hear one from someone I have converted. It is always the same. After a few weeks it starts to click. They understand why people are so fanatic about Macs and they cannot understand why they didn’t do it sooner. And they almost always encourage others to ‘see the light.’

  35. Hey “7up” you’re forgetting something – there are people who actually have to work for a living. If all you do is play gamez (sic) all day. Well, your life is pretty much useless anyway so, a Windows computer really does figure in your life.

  36. Everybody knows that clueless, ignorant Windoze users like Ron and 7up are the homos. I mean, who takes it up the ass more than Windoze users? M$ has been f*cking its users in the ass since day one, and these two homos keep coming back for more. The poundings have clearly come more frequent and gotten more and more violent lately with the constant Vista delays and inability to secure the operating system, so I can see why they’re lashing out at us Mac users. Their asses are as red as a baboon’s. 7up is essentially whoring him self out for video games. What a sad life.

  37. There are fiscal conservatives and there are social conservatives. Anyone can be a fiscal conservative and vote Republican and still have social liberal ‘Democratic’ values. It’s not all black and white. There are shades of grey.

  38. People like ‘Big Boy’ show their lack of intelligence merely by breathing.

Firstly, by bringing up Quisling, you bring up the topic of Nazi sympathizers.

Amongst those who sympathised with the aims of Nazi Germany or profited from their relationship with the Nazi regime were such notable figures as Walt Disney and Henry Ford, who were both vicious anti-Semites. Indeed, both Ford and General Motors maintained factories in Germany well into the progress of World War II.

It’s worth bearing in mind that the USA only joined the war against Nazi Germany because Hitler, for reasons that defy logic, thought it would be a smart move to declare war against the USA. Otherwise, American companies would doubtless have continued profiting from slave labour. An unpalatable truth, but a truth never the less.

Of course, no conversation about Nazi sympathisers would be complete without a reminder that the current President’s grandfather (Prescott Sheldon Bush) was – at the very least – silently complicit in helping the Thyssen family bankroll the Nazi’s military expansion during the Thirties whilst a director and shareholder of UBC which was almost specifically established to act as one of a global network of financial fronts for that family. Whilst none of this was, in itself, illegal until the USA entered the war, it is worth remembering that the Bush family’s ability to move into the oil & energy business was partially funded by the the funds – however minor – paid to Prescott Bush when UBC was dissolved in 1951.

Being a sympathiser by intent is, of course, worse than being an ‘accidental’ sympathiser; however, nobody with Prescott Bush’s intelligence could have failed to realise that he was effectively a minor player in the Nazi’s industrial machine. A defence of “there was nothing criminal in these activities at the time” is, of course, enough to get Bush off the hook in a court of law, but in a court of moral opinion I would imagine that most people would take a dim view of individuals who knowingly profited from arguably the most bestial regime in the history of the modern world.

  39. Well, Mondale, as long as we’re persecuting people for the crimes of their fathers, or grandfathers in this case, you conveniently left out Joe Kennedy as a rabid anti-Semite and Nazi sympathizer. Hmmm, I wonder why?

MDN mw: feeling; I get the feeling Mondale left out Pappa Joe on purpose.

  40. Oh, don’t worry I hold Joe Kennedy in just as much contempt: a man who bought his influence with money earned from what was criminal activity at the time (no matter how misguided the law) and – as you say – a Nazi sympathizer largely because of some simplistic “my enemy’s enemy is my friend” anti-British pro-IRA nonsense.

If Joe Kennedy hadn’t have been one of those most vocal in delaying the USA’s entry into the war in Europe, there is a possibility that several million lives could have been saved including much of European Jewry.

It’s worth noting that if that scenario had been achieved, maybe the modern day state of Israel wouldn’t be so inclined to exhibit an aggressive siege mentality at the drop of the hat as it wouldn’t have the collective memory of the Jewish people being ‘abandoned’ by the Allied powers and maybe the USA wouldn’t have its entire West Asia/Middle East foreign policy defined by what appears to be a prime directive that Israel must be defended and supplied whether it’s right, wrong, proportionate or whatever.

The thing about the Kennedy family however is that there appears to be an ever dwindling number of them (bizarre considering the number that Joe and Rose started of with) and the remaining ones don’t seem that interested in going into public life. However, the Bush family is another matter as there seems to be no end of born-with-a-silver-spoon, fake good ol’ boy offspring that seem to be able to convince middle America that they have their interests at heart.

Personally, I think the Constitution should have another amendment that says that only two consecutive generations of any family should be allowed to have a representative in public life and then they have to take a break and remind themselves of how real people live. But that’s never going to happen.

  41. Looks like Microsoft won’t have to work too hard because Apple CEO Steve Jobs is reportedly sick. Just check out the firestorm of blogs and print media articles reporting on Steve’s dizzy, coughing, stumbling keynote at WWDC06 that he handed off to his other execs to finish for him when he couldn’t continue.
