Game industry researcher: Apple-Nintendo merger unlikely

GameDaily BIZ’s James Brightman spoke with DFC Intelligence president David Cole, who closely follows the video game industry, to see what he thinks of all this Nintendo-Apple talk.

“That does sound pretty crazy,” remarked Cole, referring to the rumor. “You know for years and years it was like Nintendo and Sega were going to merge any day… Obviously Nintendo has done really well in terms of their profitability and their market value has really held up—if you go back and look at how their market value has held up over this past generation compared to, say Sony and Microsoft, who have seen drastic declines in their market value. And if you consider that Nintendo was considered sort of the loser in the last generation, and now they’ve got the opportunity to go into a new generation and restart their market share… clearly, it might not be the best time from their side to be looking to sell.”

Cole didn’t deny that Apple could be interested in Nintendo, however. It’s just not likely that Nintendo would agree. “[Apple] could start reaching out to see if Nintendo is interested, and then they say no. That would probably be the most likely scenario that I would see,” he said. “You know, companies are always talking with each other… which can lead to rumors and speculation. It just goes on all the time. The chance of something actually getting finalized is a totally different ballgame.”

Cole also noted that he “wouldn’t be terribly surprised” if Apple did become more active in the games space.

  1. Just posted something about PM G5’s having problems with thheir liquid cooling system and the best way to get Apple to fix it and it gets deleted. Amazing. MDN doesn’t even want to help it’d own readers out. Shame.

  2. MDN if you really care about your readers, then THAT is the kind of news you SHOULD be reporting. Possible problems and how to go about getting them fixed. Noticed no article about the discoloration on the white MacBooks as well. MDN needs to report about Macs – warts and all. Some of this bad news may help someone get their problem resolved. Obviously MDN doesn’t give a shit about it’s readers and turns a blind eye to potential and real problems. Chalk one up for integrity in journalism for MDN!

  3. pog – true. But when you find something that some people may need to hear about and post a link, what’s the big deal? My intention was not to hijack a thread – just post some info that otherwise some people may have not seen.

  4. Even though the DS is obviously the product of a snow g3 ibook mating with a gameboy, the whole nintendo idea is stupid, and it is funny to see someone being offered as an analyst to state their opinion about monkey shit someone else was just pulling out of their behinds.

The dumbest part is that Ninentendo very, very clearly is the polar opposite of Apple when it comes to pricing–Apple wants to concentrate as much as possible on the higher end, while Ninetendo’s entire pricing system is based on offering systems that are years behind spec wise, but priced aggressively–example one being the $129 DS lite vs. the $200-$250 PSP, or the below $300 Wii v. $400 360 or $600 PS3.

  5. Forget Nintendo, buy EA instead!

EA is the AOL of gaming.

What’s with these “journalists” seeding all this misinformation? Are they trying to goad Apple into screwing itself up? First Apple’s doing a new PDA, then a cell phone, then buying Disney, and now this. WTF? What’s wrong with Apple focusing on what they’re good at?

  6. “You know, companies are always talking with each other… which can lead to rumors and speculation. It just goes on all the time. The chance of something actually getting finalized is a totally different ballgame.”

Nintendo recently announced that the Wii would use the Opera web browser. Opera is one of the few browsers that passes the ACID2 test. And so is Safari. Both work on the PPC, which the Wii is based on.

Perhaps Nintendo spoke to Apple about putting Safari on the Wii, and that is where this rumor started?

  7. Not such a bad idea really. When you think of the apple stores that product would fit in nicely, it is small and well designed. It would bring more people into the stores and Apple could make money off both the retail and wholesale side.

  8. “and ½ … MDN did run the story days ago. You need decaf… or just get the hell off the site if it moves you to vent your spleen on every thread”

Hmmmmm….just checked all the archives for June – no mention of the story. If it’s further back, let me know. And ½……errr Mac Yak or MDN is it?, I don’t vent on on every thread. And no I will not just get the hell off this site as you suggest. Why? Because I don’t give a fuck about what others like you think of me. Post something relevant and get flamed, that’s just the way it is here – I suppose I have FINALLY learned my lesson on that one. All my posts from now on wil be “GO APPLE!” “Rock On Steve!” “Apple can do no wrong!” – no room for discussion, just all positive Apple posts from now on. Were just one big happy family.

”© = still needs help, no matter what character their twisted psyche hides behind”

Yeah, and Mac Yak is a name I hear everyday as well, as if no none uses handles on this forum. I totally agree, anyone who disagress with MDN needs psychiatric evaluation. Conform or be ostracised! Heil MDN!

  9. © : I’m curious as to what’s going on here. It seems like not only your stuff got deleted, but some of whatever was being said about you did as well. What’s the deal & what did you post about the G5? I own one and enquiring minds would like to know.

  10. Wasn’t going to come back to this thread, but made one last look. Odyssey67 – I posted a link to a story about liquid cooled PM G5’s leaking. Some of the comments from the readers of the article (at the article page) were helpful in how to get Apple to fix the problem instead of denying it. It was a recent article as well. I figured if someone here was having the same problem, they would know it was NOT an isolated incident. I noted in my post that it was off topic, but as you well know some people around here don’t like reality. Here is the original link (this thread is old enough that MDN may not censor it at this point):

    http://arstechnica.com/journals/apple.ars/2006/6/12/4301

You see, here at MDN Apple NEVER makes a faulty product, so posts like these get deleted. Most of the other major Mac news sites had no problem running the story (it actually might HELP someone). Note no coverage of discolored MacBooks either (although I haven’t checked yet today 06/15)

Hopefully this post will be here when you get back.
