Typically unoriginal Microsoft hires ‘Daily Show’ comic for Windows Vista ad campaign

“The rivalry between Microsoft Corp. and Apple Computer Inc. apparently extends to the cast of ‘The Daily Show,'” Todd Bishop reports for The Seattle Post Intelligencer. “Microsoft has reached a deal with Demetri Martin, the comic behind the fake news program’s periodic ‘Trendspotting’ feature, to star in a marketing campaign for the upcoming Windows Vista, according to a story Wednesday in the trade publication The Hollywood Reporter.”

“The report comes after Apple tapped the Comedy Central show’s ‘resident expert,’ John Hodgman, to spoof Windows PCs in its latest TV commercials,” Bishop reports. “Microsoft wouldn’t confirm or deny the story in The Hollywood Reporter. The report, citing anonymous sources, said Martin would be ‘the face of a massive multipronged campaign’ for Windows Vista, the next version of the flagship program, set for retail release next year… Microsoft spent some $200 million on advertising for the 2001 launch of Windows XP, and company executives have said the Vista release will be the biggest since Windows 95.”

  1. I think you have vastly underestimated the creative ability of retarded puppies everywhere by making that comparison.

Will Demetri live long enough to make this gig? I’m surprised they didn’t choose Carrot Top.

  2. “Further proof, if you needed any more, that Microsoft follows Apple around like a retarded puppy.”

yes, unfortunately everyone, bar a very few, just see the puppy.

A work colleague of mine said that she believed that Windows popularity was due to the fact that Microsoft had made the computer more accessible to everyday users. I told her that actually it was Apple that did that, and she didn’t believe me.

  3. Biggest launch since Windows 95? What a waste THAT would be on a “re-skinned” Windows XP, when MS could spend all that ad money to create a worthy OS. Windows 95 was actually revolutionary when compared to Windows 3.1, the predecessor. If MS think it can make up for a real “revolution” with marketing dollars, they will be sadly mistaken.

  4. I like Demitri Martin alot. His standup comedy routine cracks me up. It’s a pity he’s on Microsoft’s payroll. I hope he’s not promoting something he doesn’t believe in for that would make him a cash whore. On Microsoft’s part they should have chose a retarded dog instead of Demetri because the BS he’ll have to cook up won’t be believable and a retarded puppy just looks so cute!

  5. “oor, politically repressed, retarded pups, in here spouting off-topic, with no provocation whatsoever.”

    LOL

…so I’m not allowed to mention Rush Limbaugh or Colbert, or you will, uh, call me names? I know these are awkward times to be a “conservative”, but I think you need to turn your “touchiness” dial down a notch or two.

Colbert is from the Daily Show, so that was totally on-topic.

Rush is a big mac fan, and an embarrassment to pretty much everybody with a brain, so I would say my concerns about him are valid and on-topic.

By the way, could someone explain to me what “conservative” people are conserving these days? The long-term financial welfare of the USA? The lives of our troops? American jobs? Our European alliances? The environment? Civil liberties? The status quo? I’m just curious.

  6. “A work colleague of mine said that she believed that Windows popularity was due to the fact that Microsoft had made the computer more accessible to everyday users.”

More accessible than if it had no OS installed, I guess.

The real reason for the “popularity” is that PC makers have had no choice of what they ship their machines with.

    MW: truth

  7. “The report comes after Apple tapped the Comedy Central show’s ‘resident expert,’ John Hodgman, to spoof Windows PCs in its latest TV commercials,” Bishop reports.”

Hodgman never made an appearance on The Daily Show until AFTER the Apple ad campaign started – unlike this article claims Apple hired him BECAUSE of his status on The Daily Show.

Sorry MS Haters, but you can’t believe every word you read. Not all anti Microsoft propoaganda is fact, I’m sorry to say. The Daily Show hired him pretty much FOR THE PURPOSE of having a laugh at the Apple ad campaign.
