CrossOver Office for Intel-based Apple Macs hits Alpha

“CrossOver Office for Intel Macs has hit alpha 1, and has been made availible for limited public testing. It comes as a standard OS X package, and, while it requires X11, it appears that CodeWeavers is working to eliminate this dependency,” sHARD reports for OSx86 Project. “After installation, users simply click on a Windows .exe file to launch it. CrossOver Office has a sort of start menu which resembles it’s Windows counterpart, allowing users to easily launch installed Windows software. Reportedly, CrossOver Office will also support the creation of a Macintosh application wrapper of sorts. This allows for Windows programs to appear in your standard Applications window.”

sHARD reports, “Cut and paste sharing, as well as Windows applications on the dock, appear to work. While this software is still alpha and obviously experiences it’s share of crashes and kernel panics, this strong feature list is very promising.”

MacDailyNews Note: CodeWeavers’ stated mission is to make operating systems like Mac OS X and Linux into Windows-compatible operating systems. By doing so, CodeWeavers provides a bridge to help users migrate from the Windows software world to these other worlds. CodeWeavers does this primarily by making it possible to use Windows software on Linux and Mac OS X.

CodeWeavers is the leading corporate backer of the Wine Project. Wine is an open source software initiative that is systematically re-implementing the Win32 API under Unix. Wine makes it possible for Linux PCs to run Windows application as if natively.
