iTWire’s Beer: My next notebook is an Apple MacBook

“Whatever else you may think of Apple, it is a company that makes top quality hardware. Now along comes MacBook, an Intel notebook made by Apple, capable of running Windows in dual boot mode, packed with power, with all these plug and play features built-in, and very reasonably priced. I’m in the market for a notebook so what am I going to do? I have been a long time campaigner for mandatory three-year warranties on all PC notebooks. My last two notebooks, an HP and a Toshiba, clapped out on me within two years. I figured I deserved better for $2000. Judging by the mounds of Apple faithful who assure me, I’m fairly certain that a MacBook isn’t going to give up on me within three years. Anyway, at a starting price of $1099 plus the cost of Windows, I’m prepared to take the gamble,” Stan Beer writes for iTWire.

“I’m not a fan of Mac OSX, mainly because I’ve got all this stuff stored on my Windows desktops and it would be a real hassle to move over to an alien world. However, if I can also have a Windows partition on my disk, then I can take advantage of all of the nifty things that I’ve been told the Mac OSX can do without me fiddling around, while doing the work I need to do in Windows,” Beer writes. “Given that I have been a DOS and Windows user for 20 years, the fact that I am seriously considering buying a MacBook should be ringing alarm bells and sending shivers down the collective spines of Dell, Acer, Lenovo, HP, Toshiba and all the other PC notebook makers.”

  1. with all these plug and play features built-in, and very reasonably priced

How can it be PLUG and play if it’s built in? It just “plays”. ” width=”19″ height=”19″ alt=”smile” style=”border:0;” />

Hmm… no core solo models. I wonder what surprises we’ll see tomorrow…

  2. competition:

No coincidence at all. APPL has been experiencing what are called “bear raids” for weeks. The bears — even those working for a certain multi-zillionaire rival — will eventually run out of cash and be stuck with a lot of paper once the stock starts picking up again when the iPod line is rejuvenated. By then, goofs like them — and you — will have been kicked to the curb. Keep on enjoying mediocrity!

  3. ..One by one they fall. Top three computers on Amazon are Macbooks. The black one is #3!! In the top 25 list, 13 are Macs! Apple has hit the home run with the Macbooks.

MW: left. Other Wintel makers are picking up what is left.

  4. rasterbator: I am a translator. I used Translation Memory software and voice dictation software. There is no TM software for Mac and no voice dicatation software worth mentioning either. Windows drives me crazy sometimes, and I do prefer a Mac, but the ability to run Windows on a Mac is a godsend for me and I am sure many other people too. It has nothing to do with childish statements about security or otherwise. Windows has a massive developer base with products for most fields of work. Mac does not. Unfortunately.

  5. Top three computers on Amazon are Macbooks.

    ———

Not that it’s a bad thing that the top 3 are Macs, but looking at those numbers realistically…

    1. Dell computers are not sold on Amazon.
    2. Amazon is offering a $100 rebate.
    3. Not many Pc users buy their computers on Amazon.

  6. One more thing….

Apple computers have been ruling the Amazon top 10 list for more than a year now and Mac shipments from last quarter were still only around a million units..

Bottom line.. Amazon’s top 10 list doesn’t mean much

  7. “Apple computers have been ruling the Amazon top 10 list for more than a year now and Mac shipments from last quarter were still only around a million units..”

And just think of all of the really tall, muscular women from South America who could use a MacBook.

  8. Oh, DEAR! Apple’s market cap has fallen below Dell’s once again! When the competition is this tight you can’t afford a 3%+ drop on a day when the guy who’s behind registers a 1%+ gain. I wonder how much Dell spent of his own cash to make that happen!

Sun and Cisco also bucked the day’s trend and ended on an up-note. The Dow, S&P and NASDAQ all finished about 2/3% down on the day. Anyone who has been following Apple stock is well aware that its moves are far crazier than those of most stocks. It will go down instead of up as often as not on news – good OR bad.

  9. Actually John (and Fred and jer), in the context of the article, the reference to a “security blanket” is wholly appropriate (apart from the word security being used to reference Windows!) as this is basically what the guy is saying: I don’t know mac but I know windows and can use what I feel comfortable with while testing the mac.
I think you are showing early signs of paranoia thinking that every reference to the security blanket refers to those like you who just need to use Windows for the odd crucial app. Maybe it’s just narcissism.
I think the term security blanket applies to lots of windows users who are thinking of switching. I see it every day. “Oh I’ve been looking at switching for a while, but now I can install windows I’m going to give it a try”.
The world doesn’t revolve around you!

MW: needed, John needed to look at the context and stop taking things personally.

  10. Let’s be honest here–the great thing about Boot Camp is that it allows Windows users to try a mac while remaining able to use all that great cracked and pirated bittorrented software they rely on so much, which I’ve had fun sampling the past two months.
