“Samsung Electronics said on Sunday it has changed the graphic designs used in its latest handset model ‘Skin,’ after it was found to have copied Apple and Microsoft artwork,”Cho Jin-seo reports for The Korea Times. “The electronics giant admitted plagiarizing designs of the handset’s graphic user interface. Many graphic designers and other Internet users on various Web communities such as http://www.appleforum.com over the last two weeks have accused the firm of stealing the designs.”
“‘There were a few mistakes while we were developing the new product,’ Chung Kook-hyun, chief of Samsung’s corporate design center, told The Korea Times by phone. ‘We have already fixed the designs and I believe that the old models are not being sold in the market anymore.’ Chung said he did not identify how or by whom the copied icons were put into the new cell phone. Samsung said that it recalled the Skin phones from retailers nationally, and users who already purchased the phone can update the graphic menu by downloading software via the company homepage,” Cho Jin-seo reports.

I agree with Billy Bob. DL is being way way too ridiculous about his over sensitivity to what really is kinda funny. I’m quite sure that people over there make fun of the way people over here talk. Big whoop.
Besides, how is it offensive? In what way does it offend people?
It doesn’t.
Samsung has never had a good relationship with Apple. This will make it worse. Now I know I will need to upgrade my Samsung a670 since hell will freeze over before it ends up on the iSync list. 🙁
Which Verizon phone is the best on Apple’s iSync list?
Billy Bob,
Excluding the insult, your response was in line with my comment. Hmmm. Well, no. I should have left out the klan thing … my bad.
macromancer,
kindly butt out. This is not a poll and it is none of your business. My comment called for some sensitivity but was far from “way way too” ANYTHING. Except maybe the klan thing.
Yes people in Asia tend to say offensive things about westerners – including folk like Billy Bob (worse about folk like him) – and I’d expect you to be insulted by some of it. I know I am, when I hear it. They are generally sensitive enough to keep it between themselves. How does a few (hundred million) clodish orientals make it right for you to make fun of a few (Billion) who are not clods?
How is it offensive? It suggests they are too stupid to speak the language correctly. As if the speaker can speak EVERY language correctly. The reason they get “r” and “l” “wrong” is due to the lack of one or the other in their language. Japanese have no “l” and they hear it as an “r”, the Chinese just the opposite.
Closer to home, for most of us, would be the eeuw (not exactly) sound in French. If you were not brought up around French speakers you might not even hear/recognize it. My HS French teacher noticed when I came back from college able to make the sound! She was majorly impressed. I’d worked it out in a speech lab – your lips act like you are saying “ooo” and your tongue like you are saying “eee”, and the right sound comes out. Until you get that right, you sound like a chimp to a Frenchman.
macromancer,
Making fun of how people speak another language is offensive. People unfairly judges other people’s intelligence by how well they speak another language. So, it is offensive. It’s only funny to people who have never lived as a minority anywhere.
YYEEEEEEEEEEEAAAAAAAAHHHHHHHHHHHH! — We no have-a anyting good to say to YOU, round eye!!!

Okay, G.I.?
Oh, that icon! Pure coincidence. Nothing to get excited about. Could’ve happened to anyone.
It still looks like a nice GUI for a phone…
DLMeyer,
I’m an English teacher in Japan and my wife is Japanese. The Japanese people are always joking about their English pronunciation, and there are even some TV commercials that joke about it.

you, yourself, and … you again?
The Japanese I’m familiar with, all in the rural north, might joke between themselves about such things but were never happy to have NON-Japanese making fun of them. Of course, I haven’t discussed it with them in a few years. And they (and I) are ALL well over 40 these days – brought up in a different time. The younger Japanese I’ve met much more recently are no different … make fun of themselves with a smile but accept “insult” with a face of stone.
Do you make fun of strangers over there? Twice? Thought not.
