The broken glass front is weird looking….
The photos on Flicker don’t dont do it for me. They failed to capture the general ‘sexy’ feel that the apple design has. However, in the photographer’s defense, he was probably in a hurry to get in there and buy a new mac, and then in even more of a hurry to get it home and fire it up.

It’s cool to have a “real” apple store in toronto, the yorkdale one is tiny.
I hope that “carbon computing” doesn’t have their sales hurt too badly
by this corporate store, they are an awesome independant mac retailer
only a few miles from the Eaton Center.

Tom Strong: Sure, because Toronto has a very high person-per-square-foot compared to most of the rest of Canada. Apple is putting stores where there’s the most people that will be customers.
There is more money per person in Calgary AB then anywhere in Canada.
You would think that would count for something.
I grabbed a few quick shots to give people a “feel” for the new Apple Store in the Toronto Eaton Centre. It’s much more spacious than the first Apple Store in Canada at Yorkdale Mall (just 30 min north of this one).
I don’t have stats to prove it, but I bet Toronto has at least double the average of Macintosh market share (whatever that really is). So it would have been nice to see a real statement rather than the two conservative shops Apple has opened in Canada so far.
But hey, they’re better than nothing, right?
You won’t get a store in Edmonton AB any time soon.
They will have to get the literacy level above 15% first.
I agree, Calgary should get an Apple store as well, as should Vancouver, Winnipeg, and most especially Montréal. (The vibe in Apple store and the vibe in downtown Montréal would go very well together).
Halifax would be another spot, but I don’t know it well enough to say whether it should go there as well. But I’m not in charge of Apple’s Canadian retail strategy, and I don’t have the market-share numbers to really make the strategic choice.
I guess Toronto is a start; hopefully we’ll see more Apple stores before too long.

That mall in Laval is apparently the largest mall in all of Quebec.
I heard somewhere it is the biggest mall in eastern Canada, over three hundred stores spread out on one level, that’s a lot of walking!

West Edmonton Mall, still the largest entertainment and shopping mall in North America and the third largest in the world, receives over 4 million visitors per year. International travel agencies offer discount deals for tourists to visit and shop ’til you drop. A great place for an Apple Store!

West Edmonton Mall encompasses 5.2-million square feet of total floor space, 800 stores (including 8 department stores), a 360-room hotel, and 110 restaurants and eating places. A full-scale amusement park with 47 different rides, an ocean-wave swimming pool with sand beach, an aquarium, a miniature golf course, and a wedding chapel.

Apple closed their corporate office in Calgary several years ago.
Simply not enough reason for it to exist there as the penetration of Apple into anything beyond publishing and education was nil.
There was no justification for it as nearly none of the big businesses in town had anything but Windows.
An Apple store in Calgary might find similar conditions to the corporate market and so simply not be sustainable regardless of how much money there is.
Apple puts stores where there’s a decent population (Calgary is still too small) and a rasonable user base (Toronto surpasses Calgary there)

How many existing Apple retailers are there in Calgary? or Edmonton? How big is/are the store(s)? Ratio of population to # of stores?
The GTA is the largest population centre in Canada, and when you toss in the surrounding areas, you get a whole whack of people. There are a number of existing retailers as well (for now, but that’s another discussion). It’s not about how ‘rich’ the residents are, it’s about how many and if they actually BUY Macs. (Calgaraians always seem quick to point out the money in their town, even if none of it is their’s). My part of Canada (near Toronto) has 500,000 people in 4 closely spaced cities, along with a reasonable amount of Mac users from what I can tell. We have 1 Apple dealer. (A good one, too)
Calgary, Alberta is home to the head offices of the Canadian oil companies (exploration and production), and is closing in on 1 million citizens.
With a highly educated population, a lot of disposible income and probably the largest city in Canada in areal extent – it is the ideal place for an Apple store.
There are a few really good Apple certified retailers in Calgary, so the city is well served already. But a corporate store there would certainly lift the image of Apple in this rather conservative-mided city.
Calgary is the fastest growing city in Canada.

The two newspapers publish with Macs, but they’re System 9, if that.
I think they’re running into problems. Many of the hand cranks have fallen off the sides of the beige boxes, and no one makes replacements, anymore.
It’s true that Edmonton has a lot of well educated visitors to the West Edmonton Mall. Tourists don’t buy computers. Most locals are so stupid they don’t even use Windows.
The best thing coming out of Edmonton is the highway heading south to Calgary AB.
I would say patience everybody.
I feel a little embarassed/greedy at having 3 Apple Stores in the Toronto area (open/opening), with 1 only elsewhere, but it wasn’t my idea

Assuming the Mac user population is reasonable, it would seem to be a no brainer for a store in Calgary, Edmonton, Vancouver, Ottawa. I would expect several for Vancouver, Montreal, in fact. I would also expect one for Winnipeg, Halifax. But it will take a couple of years. Remember prior to the Eaton’s Center we only had one store for all of Canada.
Remember that Apple went through a rough patch so all of the weak, lukewarm dealers, generally, have been weaned out. This means the remainder are both committed and strong, what with Apple’s recent resurgence. Assuming y’all have a dealer nearby, we’re fairly well served in the meantime, generally.
On the other hand, I felt pretty hard done by when Buffalo (a much smaller city relatively nearby) got an Apple Store long before Canada did. So I understand.
Buffalo, now there’s a town with money! Used to stop in there when I was on the road, as was reasonably easy to park the big truck at the Galleria. Seemed to me that store had mostly Canadians shopping in it when I was there. (Prior to Yorkdale store) Was only place to get iPod mini for a while as none were available in Canada. Naturally, I am sure all purchases were declared to Customs on the way back in!!!
Reply to Relieved. I am talking about Carbon Computing, in Kitchener. Seems to be a reasonable store, as they do sales and service, and are Mac/Apple only store. I have bought some accessories there. They have lots of stuff set up to try, as they have followed Apple’s lead in this (I am assuming, as I havn’t been to their T.O. store). Much prefer dealing with them to dirtying myself at Future Plop and (not the) Best Buy!
MW-wife, as in my wife wants to know why we have 4 Macs in the house, plus 2 at my mother’s house! ( I think I need help) The debate about whether we have junk, a museum or a shrine continues.

Look to the “Core 2 Duo” to run 20% faster than the Core Duo at the same MHz, and to the “Core 2 Duo Extreme” to kick some major AMD butt.
…G5 can kiss its butt goodbye once “Core 2 Duo” comes along, especially with “Core 2 Duo Extreme”. 4MB L2 cache, higher performance per Mhz, higher Mhz, more efficient, 64 bit, SSE, SSE2, SSE3 and SSE4 support (who needs alticec).
I wonder what this replacement for the “PowerMac G5” will be known as?
