Apple patent shows LCD display that simultaneously takes pictures while showing images

“We could soon see a new kind of display screen from computer maker Apple – one that simultaneously takes pictures while showing images. The clever idea is to insert thousands of microscopic image sensors in-between the liquid crystal display cells in the screen. Each sensor captures its own small image, but software stitches these together to create a single, larger picture,” Barry Fox reports for New Scientist. “A large LCD screen filled with image sensors would be ideal for videoconferencing, Apple suggests, as participants would always appear to look straight into the “camera”. The technique could also add a camera function to a cellphone or PDA without wasting space, and light from the screen should help illuminate a subject.”

“The more sensors there are, the wider and clearer the image. Sketches accompanying the company’s patent show as many sensors as liquid crystal cells in a screen. If some of the sensors have different focal lengths, switching between them would make the screen behave like a zoom lens,” Fox reports.

  1. And to lastonestanding’s point.

The actions of current governments in monitoring citizens is VERY different to the COVERT monitoring suggested in 1984.

The other issue is that 1984 was making the point that the government was using its powers to ensure people conformed. At the moment the purpose is to locate people that are planning violence against others. Yet I do acknowledge we as citizens have to be wary and ensure it doesn’t “evolve” into people that just have different views to what the goverment likes. That is why I was appalled at the respone in the US to the illegal phone tapping of US citizens by the US government. Seems Americans are happy to give up their freedoms in the name of freedom (fries).

Want to make a hoopla about the invasion of government on your privacy and rights? Don’t complain about this tecnolgy here – complain to your representatives to ensure that the US Presidents (of any colour or animal – although when it comes to illegal wire taps the Republican Presidents seem to be the experts) doesn’t get away with doing what has been done. And leave the cool inventions to those that

JUST DON’T make the hoopla here – this is about technolgy, not politics – I only mention above, because I wanted to suggest that if you are worried about these things, make the point where it counts (in letters and votes), not on here.

  2. Put the same sensors on the back of the screen. Project what’s behind the monitor on the monitor. Your Mac seems to vanish. StealthMac! Enderle would probably knock it over and hurt himself as prophesied.
