“The Texas man who jumped-started the effort to get Windows XP to dual-boot on Intel-based Macs posted the winning solution on his site Thursday, and said the contest’s cash prize of nearly $14,000 had been won by a pair of Californians,” Gregg Keizer reports for TechWeb News. “In January, Colin Nederkoorn of Houston began taking donations for a prize to be awarded to the first developer who came up with a way to boot an Intel Mac into either Mac OS X or Windows XP. Within days, he had raised thousands. Nederkoorn had a selfish reason for the contest: He wanted to downsize from two machines — a PowerPC-based Mac and a PC running Windows — that he was using at work to just one, an Intel MacBook Pro he’d ordered as soon as Apple debuted the new systems.”
“Two men collaborated to come up with the solution, said Nederkoorn. Although he said they lived in California, he wouldn’t disclose their names, saying that they wanted to remain anonymous for now,” Keizer reports. “To produce a dual-boot Mac, users must customize a Windows XP installation CD by burning a new disc that includes the custom bootloader files. The Mac must also be partitioned — a disk partitioning utility is included with the machine — so that Mac OS X and Windows XP can co-exist on the same drive. Nederkoorn was very satisfied with the solution. ‘The Mac runs Windows extremely well,’ he said… ‘There are driver issues right now. There’s not a good video driver for Windows XP,’ he said. ‘And the Mac crashes when you shut down Windows. People are going to need to talk to each other and share [information]… I think this could be a big boom for Apple,’ Nederkoorn agreed. ‘On a dual-boot, Windows is directly accessing [Intel’s] Core Duo [processor]. I’ve never had a laptop this fast.'”

MacDailyNews Take: As we asked back in early June 2005, using “Dell” as a stand in for all Windows box assemblers, “Why buy a Dell when Apple ‘Macintel’ computers will run both Mac OS X and Windows?” Wait until Wall Street figures this one out. With a few issues left to iron out, it’s almost time to shut down the company and give the money back to the shareholders, Mikey.

Make one thing clear, Apple will NEVER support this. They wont stop it, but you think you can bring in your mac running windows into an Apple Store for support? You’ve got another thing coming.
Just because some hacker got it to work, doesn’t mean Apple’s going to fall in line with Dell, Gateway and HP… Apple is still apple, and if you wanna pay $1299 for a fancy looking PC, then you’re just wasting your time and your money.

Maybe there’s a prise if I can run Visicalc on the Macbook Pro
This is pure nonesense. I came to the Mac to AVOID windows. I don’t give a rat’s ass if someone is forced to use windows somewhere and thinks it is cool to run that crap on a mac.
Intel sucks, windows sucks and windows on a mac sucks even more…
Why are people freaking out if a Windows can be booted on Mac??
Just as MDN suggested, why would people buy Dells, when they can buy macs with both Windows and Mac OS can be used???
I need to have 2 computers in my home. Generally, i would like to use a mac only, but for my gaming needs, the need to use windows-only application like AutoCad forces me to have a pc.
But, now with can imagibe the possibiltites??? I need only one computer, use the supperiority Mac OS, and still play windows games and windows application.
Although, i thought at first, a simluator would be the solution, this is even better!!
“We will no longer invest in Mac OS X, because Macs are being made to run Windows, by far the dominant OS. All future releases will be Windows only”.
On the contrary, more people will embrace the Mac platform as a result of this news. Do you realize how many Windows users are eager to leave the Wintel platform because of issues like security, viruses, etc? What on earth would make you think people would buy an expensive piece of hardware only to install Windows on it? Why wouldn’t you just buy a cheap Wintel box for that matter? Why even buy a Mac?
Many of the people I speak with on a day to day basis are encouraged when they hear this news. It allows Windows users to slowly leave their Wintel machines and safely try a Mac without compromising functionality. Their Windows investment remains safe, they retain all their Windows software and still have the ability to network and use business specific applications designed for Windows. Once Apple has it’s foot in the door, it’s very difficult to return to the Windows platform. Consider this is a door opener. The hard work of getting their foot in the door is accomplished by allowing users to run Windows natively on a Mac. Not much different than the iPod halo effect. You get a taste of the Apple experience when you own an iPod.
The Apple experience is something all Wintel mfg’s dream of but could never accomplish in a lifetime. If Apple could get new users to the platform, albeit unintentionally, the chances of these new users adopting the Macintosh platform over Windows is extremely good.
The notion that some will buy a Mactel just to run Windows, is a flawed argument. More will buy Mactels for the Macintosh platform (OS) and use Windows as a sideline. Do any of you Mac fanatics doubt this?
Does anyone want to wager on this? I’ll bet my MBP this increases Apple market share provided the dual boot is user friendly and all the hardware, printer, network issues can be resolved and made to work seemlessly between both platforms.
Anyone?
Good Good!!
I can feel your anger, let the hate flow, and more and more will you become my slave.
Soon you will be calling me MASTER
Heck, I could not get Windows to run a Dell.
WTF Y WOULD U EVER WANT TO USE SOME SHITTY ASS WINDOWS CRAP ID RATHER NOT USE ANYTIHNG.
I think instead of running Windows on a MAC. MAC users should ask Developers to make MAC versions of there Software.
I see no Future for Microsoft. They have missed the Window.
What goes up must come down!
“Welcome to Windows Mac users, it’s not as bad as you led to believe.”
This is a crass statement. Where I live people still speak a 3,000 year old Celtic language. It’s like telling them that English isn’t as bad as they thought… and you thought any of them DON’T know English?
I defy you to find a Mac user that has had no experience of Windows.
Most of us have had a skinful of Windows to last us a lifetime. We use Mac and OSX because it is light to Windows’ darkness. It’s productive, not counter-productive etc etc. If you know both, you know what we mean, if you only know Windows, just TRY the Mac.
Windows on a Mac will not make a SINGLE Mac user switch to Windows.
It will (probably) make HUGE numbers of Windows users switch to Mac.
GO Apple.
Trolls and MS PR department away, back into your mire…
theres another reason to, for any web designers out there like myself, i NEED to see what my designs, specifically CSS code looks like in various browsers and platforms, i have to check them on IE for windows, and Firefox for windows.
theres no getting around that.
while virtual PC would be the best if it ran at native speeds this solution does allow someone to use a mac for all there design work and boot windows and use it at native speeds for testing.
I’ve heard through the grapevine that one of the men who developed this in California uses the moniker Mr. S. Pjobs…
I’m pleased to see that some of the folk here see this as a positive thing for the strength of Apple overall. Personally, I wouldn’t run Windows on my Mac(s) for anything; I don’t need it for work or play, it represents a scourge that should be (and probably will be) eradicated from the mainstream of computing. Web/server-based applications not dependent on OSs will eventually begin to take away from the strangle-hold that M$ has on businesses large and small, but it will be a long process. Anything in the interim that helps strengthen Apple and increase it’s overall share in the computing world is positive. The rest of you crybabies can whine all you want, there is a change in the wind and some momentum behind this; just accept it.

‘There are driver issues right now. There’s not a good video driver for Windows XP,’ he said. ‘And the Mac crashes when you shut down Windows.”
That’s a new one for Windows users: the computer crashes AFTER you used it.
This issue not addressed yet is how many people like to reboot versus keeping their computer and applications going? I reboot my Mac only when needed: a software update that requires it, or, rarely, when things just don’t seem right.
Otherwise, I want my applications constantly open and ready at any time for me to do the following: examine and modify my calendar, finish a writing assignment, reorganize my notes, reload a website with current information, send an email, respond to an instant message, listen to music, enter my business information into a spreadsheet, etc.
Oh good, now Windoze can run on even more personal computers.

I like your thinking.
While I applaud the efforts of those who got XP to boot on the Intel Mac, I’ll wait for a good virtual application. I have no desire whatsoever to boot my machine back and forth. I prefer to launch XP when I need it without having to leave OS X.
Dudes!
I got Linux to run on my analog wristwatch! think of the possibilities!
and by the way ITS NOT OVER. IT would be over only if:
this soution was provided by Apple or M$, and XP was for sale on the apple store!
this is a third party hac, and will never be supported!
I understand that many people need to run XP. But how about using a remote desktop program from your Mac to access an XP box located somewhere in your LAN instead. They don’t need to mess around with OS-X. The program is downloadable from M$. Just curious. I would not want to tamper with my Mac.
One really good reason for me to want to boot Windows on a future Intel Mac of mine would be to run programs like Auto CAD. I’m training to be a structural engineer and basically the only CAD program that is used widespread in the industry is Auto CAD. Also structural analysis software, and other engineering and science software is commonly only available on Windows.
So there are a lot of very good and useful reasons for me to want to boot up in Windows now and again, but obviously I would do absolutely as much as I can in OS X!
So people that say ‘why would you ever want to use windows’ are basically very lucky, but unfortunately we are not all in that situation!
Also DarWine would be a really nice solution, but it looks a long way off at the moment!
My 2cents.

Personally, I’d like to see a video iPod that can play Betamax tapes.
