Don’t forget the most important requirement, a .Mac account…
Yawn….
Anyone still awake?
Yeah, about that: Apple should de-couple that from .Mac and make it part of MacOS X. There’s no excuse for the OS not to ship with a good backup utility. The backup-to-iDisk feature can be an incentive to rent a .Mac account, but renting software, especially something which should be part of the OS, is just plain wrong.
You don’t rent Backup. You need to pay for a year of .mac to get it, but if you cancel your .mac account you can still use Backup to burn to cd/dvd or another drive. You will however lose the ability to backup to iDisk.
You can download Backup from:
http://www.apple.com/support/downloads/backup.html
It says a .mac account is required, but you can backup to CDs, hard drives etc without it.
Geees Rainy,
If they take it away from.Mac and add to the OS there will be nothing left in .Mac seeing as how they just dropped Virex last year and it is all a bit lean at the moment.
Most of the stuff on offer is pretty average for the money asked. Hopefully the ITEM list and quality products will increase with time???
Steve,
I tried downloading Backup 3, which is still asking for a Mac Membership just to download it…. any way round this?
Also of note (and not mentioned in the release notes) is that Backup 3.1 is now a Universal Binary. Version 3.0.1 ran under Rosetta on Macs with Intel processors.
Can’t you get a free 60-days trial licence of .Mac and get Backup?
