Red Apple iPod coming soon?

“A bold global charity initiative from U2 icon Bono could see the introduction of a special edition red iPod from Apple,” T3 reports.

“Late last week rumours surfaced that a red iPod is in the pipeline. This began following a post on Popbitch which claimed that U2 front man Bono was overheard ‘in Dublin’s Michelin-starred Patrick Guilbaud restaurant discussing a new charity red Amex card and red iPod,’” T3 reports.

“Bono today unveiled the aforementioned red Amex card as part of Product Red – a new brand of red merchandise created to help fight the global battle against HIV,” T3 reports. “Although Apple hasn’t officially been named as one of the partners in this new charity scheme, we’ve heard that an announcement could soon be on the cards.”

  1. “Spark” is right. It’s getting bloody well enough money even now.

Personally, I think “AIDS” has always existed. We just didn’t have the medical understanding or technological sophistication to be able to classify all the different maladies that AIDS causes as, well, . . . AIDS.

Anyway, I think it’s interesting to note that if “AIDS” didn’t exist, many health experts say that they would classify Lyme Disease as the number one public health threat instead.

    Something to ponder.

  2. misanthrope

    Two points regarding your post:-

    1) It’s not just about raising money, it’s about raising awareness.

    2) This isn’t about a big donation. It’s about establishing a permanent income stream.

And SB, you told your Aunt where to send her money? Well, you’re up there with Bill Gates in generosity, aren’t you.

  3. SB:
“If it didn’t affect mostly poor, gay, and minority victims, it would have likely been cured by now.”

    1. You left out children.

    2. Blacks in Africa are the majority, they are not “minorities” there.

    3. There’s no “cure” for the influenza virus which effects pretty much everyone, so there’s no reason to expect there would be a “cure” for the AIDS virus regardless of who it effected. Viruses are very, very difficult to combat, especially ones that lay dormant for a long time, and mutate like the AIDS virus does.

  4. treating aids is about politics.

    and money.

    and awareness.

    and religion.

    and minorities.

and africa. ( yes, it mostly effects blacks in africa. youthink if it mostly effected whites in North america there still wouldn’t be a cure? )

yes, virals are hard to cure, but they can be difinitively treated. flu vaccines work….but aids is much harder.

38 billion over two years is nothing. Iraq costs 177 million a day. but at the same time millions die of heart attacks, and yet you an still buy a big mac.

what we spend on health care in the US is nothing. yet people pay fortunes to HMO’s and get lousy care.

Bono could probably donate more then he gets raised, but you cant put a price on awareness. and he is high profile.

there, I should have pissed off everyone now, feel free to shoot the innocent bystander.

  5. twilight moon:

Yes, I left out children, but they’re in all of the above groups.
Blacks are the majority in Africa, but that’s not where the money comes from – it comes mostly from “white” America.
And look at those numbers from the Bush administration – surely represents the evil, hateful right, doesn’t it?
Look no further than lovely Billy Clinton who stood by and watched Rwandans get slaughtered…compassionate and intelligent liberals? LMAO.

    DaveH:

You take the cake – another 19 year old living at home that knows so much…
Well son, no, see, my aunt was gay and just died at 100. We did if “for” her after she passed last fall.
    Idiot.

  6. you’re absolutely right, innocent bystander

If you go to http://www.costofwar.com and click “Aids Epidemic” you can see that if we used all of the money we wasted on the war in Iraq so far, we could have fully funded AIDS research and treatment for 23 years! The cost of AIDS research is very small compared to what we’re spending in Iraq. But there’s not enough oil in Africa to warrant the US investing that much funding there (from this admin, at least).

  7. “HIV doesn’t cause AIDS anyway.”

    I tire of that statement.

    Serious Question:
Can you get full-blown AIDS without first getting HIV? I don’t know of a single case where someone got AIDS without first getting the HIV virus. It is the HIV virus that casues AIDS – you can’t get AIDS without FIRST becoming HIV+. If I am missing something, please explain. Seriously, maybe I am being ignorant on this issue. My understanding is that HIV is an ABSOLUTE prerequisite to AIDS and that you can’t get AIDS with out first becoming HIV+. If I am wrong, please explain – seriously.

If Apple wants to offer a red iPod wth part of the proceeds going to AIDS research, then more power to ’em. Any help is better than no help at all…..

  8. Murder junkie,

I am a paramedic, and in school it came up frequently.

yes. in order to have AIDS, you have to be HIV+ first.

some people are HIV+ and never get AIDS.

the problem is they can’t definitively prove that the two are related. there is no actual link that is currently proved between the two.

there is alot of anecdotal evidence.

this is a major debate. I don’t know the answer.

    Ib.

  9. Yep, as some people have already caught on… that picture is actually from Colorware. It’s the Ferrari red “painted” iPod.

Still think it would be cool though. I’m a big fan of bright red.

  10. We all live at home SB. That’s why it’s called home.

And you think I’m 19? Well, I’m truly flattered. It just goes to show what a good skincare regime can achieve.

You’re still wrong though. Product Red is about people, not politics. HIV hasn’t been cured, but then neither has influenza. I hope you’re equally indignatious about that multiple strain quickly mutating family of viruses still being able to kill people. No? Why am I not surprised?

And don’t try patronising me SB. Not until you’ve come up with a cohesive argument that satisfies your original idiotic presumption anyway.

  11. Dave, Dave, Dave.

I don’t need to argue. AIDS is political, like it or not. Why? Because some people associate it with the “evil gay people” that get and spread it.
You don’t see many of the same people with “Support our troops” stickers on their cars sporting AIDS ribbons, do you?
Why? because some folks see this as a “different” disease that “those people” get.
Are you that blind? I’m not saying I agree with these boneheads, just that the topic of AIDS is way different than let’s say, breast cancer.

I like the idea. I have an AMEX card, and 7 iPods in my house.
I’ll get my RED AMEX and a RED iPod!

I support it. Quit trying to use your liberal mind-bending tactics to twist what I’m saying.

  12. innocent bystander:
    RE:AIDS

“the problem is they can’t definitively prove that the two are related. there is no actual link that is currently proved between the two.”

I would have to say that they must believe there is some causal link considering one (HIV+) is a prerequisite for the other (AIDS)…..Although like you said, some people get HIV and never develop full-blown AIDS. But I would venture to guess this is possibly a minority of the cases (I don’t know the stats and I am not a Doctor)

    Thanks for the info though……

  13. SB

I see. The bumper sticker thing gives it away. You’re an American, and we are approaching this from different starting points and will never agree. I will concede that from your perspective HIV is political, because everything in the USA is polarised. In my opinion it’s not a healthy system, and I think it prevents a lot of progress, especially when it spawns ignorance like in the example you describe. But there’s nothing I can do to change that.

Here in England the big switch in people’s attitudes to AIDS happened when Freddie Mercury died. People didn’t condemn as the press expected, they sympathised. Fifteen years later, and HIV is not the gay plague it was percieved as in the 80s. Infection rates in Africa are the big problem as we see it now, but we don’t see it in a distant way. The Bliar Government and it’s grandstanding about debt relief and cheap antiretroviral drugs is in response to a massive upswell of pressure from the British people.

I don’t know, maybe we just feel responsible for Africa, having caused so many problems there in the past. But when the pressure to act comes from the people it outweighs mere politics.

Product Red will go down a storm here. It will raise an enormous amount of money, and keep the message fresh in people’s minds. It’s a great thing, and it’s going to help a lot of people across the world.

BTW, I’m sorry for my flippant comment earlier about your donation. Sometimes I should think more before clicking the Submit button.

  14. Dave H.

If you had explained that you are in the UK, it might have saved us all a bit of back-and-forth.
In the US, we are hugely divided at this moment in time.
Left vs. Right and a lot of us in the middle somewhere.

My POV was of the situation, not my feelings.
    To name more examples here:

    1) Morning-after pill
    2) Death penalty
    3) Assisted suicide

Those aren’t politics, but are certainly politically-charged topics.

We’re different here, I guess. Whether it’s good or bad, I can’t answer, but trust me, my opinions are based in observation, not my feelings.

Freddy Mercury was one of my all-time favorites, and I saw Queen in Pittsburgh in the 70’s. It remains one of my favorite memories.

Hopefully, we’re in better understanding of one another now.
