Apple + Intel’s Vanderpool could equal Windows compatibility in Mac OS X

“In a 2003 interview between ZDNet and former Intel CEO Craig Barrett, a question was asked that resulted in a very revealing response when compared against today’s relationship between Intel,” osViews reports. “Mr. Barrett responded by saying [Emphasis added], ‘It will certainly give users a lot of flexibility to have different profiles on the same machine. If people use it for multiple OSes, running in sync on the same processor, it opens up a lot of different use models, and perhaps competitive models in the marketplace. If you are able to say, have two OSes running simultaneously, you won’t have to rely on a single OS for everything. So you could have Mac OS and Longhorn on the same system, using Longhorn for business stuff and Mac OS for personal stuff. But first you’d need to convince Steve Jobs that it’s a great idea.'”

  1. I dont think this would happen like he is commenting. If you culd run a Windows application in MacOSX without actually having Windows on the machine, that would be the better scenario. If you could have the same ease of use without the deficiencies of Windows, it would be a home run.

  2. C’mon guys, Apple didn’t even attend the CES convention. What makes you think that Apple would want something so inferior like XP or Vista on such a beautifully designed Mac?!

I honestly don’t see it happening. I for one would certainly not want any M$ crap on my Mac.

  3. Yeah, that’s a great combination. Windoze can fuck up your HD, and MacOS X can fsck the HD.

People only think they want to run Windoze on a Mac. What they really want is to run Windoze app’s. There’s a difference.

  4. And i might add that folks won’t even want to run Windoze app’s if there’s a MacOS X app which does the same thing. MacOS X app’s are a nicer user experience.

  5. Mix a great OS and a crappy one? But people will do it anyway. I will myself if I HAVE to. (No need for anything on Windows for me yet!)

Consider dual OSes a transitional stage, nothing more. Good when your boss needs to you to have some obscure Win-only app.

And it’s a choice Apple won’t be encouraging, even though its an option that will sell a lot of Macs!

  6. Steve wont allow windows to run on an equal path to the mac os. ie if they have dual booting, or multi-os switching then theres the chance that viruses etc could infect the mac os through the hard-drive. i think youll find eventually that a mac will run windows apps if needed in the Mac os itself.

and folks even then there will be people that choose windows. and theyre the same ones that deserve windows.

Well, that’s a little-bit tricky. You see, Windows apps kind of need Windows to run. Short of an emulator like WINE, you’re out of luck trying to run Windows apps without Windows.

Personally, I doubt you will ever see such an environment from Apple. It will remain an excellent third-party opportunity. I think you’ll continue to see VirtualPC handling the Windows emulation, though I’m sure some other company will come out with a WINE port and charge less and have it work some of the time. Heck, the Open Source Community will probably come out with a free version, if there isn’t one already.

  8. If you have two operating systems on a new Mactel, Microsoft still makes out because one would have to buy a copy of the Windows operating system to run it on one’s mac.
    How does that help Apple?

And if Apple can do it, why can´t Dell do it on a the same Intel chip in a Dell box – both Apple and windows in a Dell?
