Fox to sell handful of select TV episodes on DirecTV; 2 shows to be available before network airing

“News Corp.‘s Fox Entertainment Group on Thursday said it plans to make some of its cable and broadcast television shows available to DirecTV viewers for a fee,” Herald News Daily reports. “The owners of the FX cable network and Fox Broadcasting will begin selling episodes of FX‘s ‘The Shield’ and ‘Rescue Me’ up to two days before they air on the network for $2.99 per show to DirecTV customers who own new digital video recorder from the satellite TV operator. Fox will sell access to episodes of ’24’ and ‘Prison Break’ for six to seven days after the initial broadcast for 99 cents.”

“Media companies have begun offering more of their programing over the Internet and on digital media devices following Apple Computer Inc began selling episodes of Walt Disney Co.‘s ‘Lost’ and ‘Desperate Housewives’ last year for its iPod digital music and video player,” Herald News Daily reports. “DirecTV is controlled by News Corp.”

Even though this is a weak effort from Fox (not portable, limited time runs, shows that expire), it’s just more evidence that Apple has changed the world again.

  1. 3 bucks to watch before the air date!!??? If you can plan that far ahead why not just set your recored in the first place? Don’t think I need to spend 3 bucks just so I can spoil the show for everyone who waits for broadcast.

  2. I’d love to get the Shield and Rescue me, but I wouldn’t pay $3 bucks just to watch it before it airs. I don’t care when it airs, if I did, I’d be watching it already, and could easily wait a day or two instead of paying for it. I want episodes/seasons that I’ve missed, and I want to be able to go back to them for however long I want to. What are they thinking? O’ well, it is Fox, the station that killed Firefly, Wonderfalls, and now Arrested Development.

  3. Don’t think I need to spend 3 bucks just so I can spoil the show for everyone who waits for broadcast.

Sounds like inducement enough for many! There are desperate souls who want to be in the know”, even if it is only how some TV show ends.

  4. These are the same idiots who cancelled Arrested Development and market their idiotic reality TV programs. Foxs is now just a whole bunch of suck.

    Bad Reality TV
FOX News (or is this also bad reality TV?)
    Cancelling good shows

The numbers just don’t add up…

  5. allgood2 and alan smalan are RIGHT!

Fox SUCKS. Any network that genuflects to put on the utter REALITY CRAP that they do, while simultaneously cancelling such great shows as FIREFLY — a show, by the way, that has upwards of an 85% conversion rate when the DVD’s are shown to people who think they won’t like it — deserves to F-CKING DIE!!!!!!!!!

Even their “renowned” sports coverage is becoming infected with their crass bullshit! F-CK Fox.

  6. Does $3 give me a show that lacks commercials? Can I keep the show on my PVR for an unlimited period of time (HD space permitting)?

I’ve said it before, deals like this one and CBS’ inDemand deal are fine in their own way, but they should not come to the exclusion of iTunes. Nor should iTunes be used to the exclusion of inDemand (or the like).

Bottom line, it’s good to see companies experiment like this, some models will work, some won’t, but we’ll never know until we see some long term numbers.

    MORE CHOICES = MORE BETTER

    Tomorrow, new Battlestar Galactica. Hurray!
