That piece of crap OS. I have a laptop with OS 9.2.2 on it and everyone once in awhile I turn it on and watch it crash, crash, crash, freeze, crash (trying to use Photoshop or other thing than email) just to remind myself that:
a) OSX is great
b) Apple can make crap.

To Shannon – I agree. Apple needs to do more. Apple seems to be building more walls with its technology instead of being compatible with others.
Shannon et al.: is that all? Boy I was worried. On Windows you can’t video iChat in conference, or use Aperture, or GarageBand.
Skype: is Beta on Windows. Will be available on OS X as well.
On Macs there are alternatives. You can’t use “this and that *program*”, sure, but I can use “those others programs” to support the same feature.
The issue is not with the Mac or its OS. It is with third-party people willing to support it. Give it time and these limited support from some vendors will start to vanish. Only, do not expect to have those Mac-only applications (iDVD, Aperture, iMovie, etc) to come on Windows any time soon.
Concerning new users, Apple stores report as much as 50% in some location of customers stating it is their very first Mac buy.
Nowadays, even hinting at possible FUD about Apple gaining share is silly: out of planet Earth.
Concerning Windows switchers using immediately Safari? Really, are you kidding me? Switchers at first will use those apps that they were using on Windows, ie, in the case of browsers, Explorer, Firefox, or the like. Certainly not Safari. Judging new-users rate on OS X on the raise of Safari is… well, I am speechless. LOL.

World-wide increase: 49%
Europe increase: 67%
Indeed: just existing Mac users replacing their Macs. Absolutely. Wall Street must believe that as well|: no gain on market share, just old Mac users replacing their Macs. That is why AAPL is over $70 now.

I am encircled by ex-Windows users asking me about their new Macs. Cannot go to places without seeing someone with a Mac. At work is simply phenomenal. Even MUGs, google for that, are seeing an increase of memberships.

Being compatible with Windows does not mean building technology walls around. Means not ENTERING the existing technology walls that Microsoft has built around itself to keep its customers entrapped in.
Break out free buddy: stop considering lack of Microsoft Windows compatibility a lack of openness. It is exactly the opposite.
Apple is compatible with everybody else not using proprietary Microsoft only technology.
Sure, the end result for the user might be the same, but have facts straight. Microsoft is incompatible with everything. You have to adopt their formats and protocols to be compatible. And then, all those NOT using Microsoft protocols and format CAN”T be compatible with you.

These statistics aren’t very accurate. Linux has a larger market share then Mac. In the United States these numbers are more true. Mac’s market share is largest in this arena. The English and German speaking (Don’t ask me why German) crowds tend to visit certain places like goggle in larger numbers then other languages which would explain these numbers as well as other sites, so depending on how market share was determined could explain this. Mac has a very small OS user base outside of the United States. Linux has a larger world-wide user base. Linux on the desktop makes up about 6-7% and 3-4%. Most of the rest being Microsoft Windows line of OS. You can take a look at IDC & Garner reports (technology market researchers).
