UK woman narrowly survives Xbox fire; users report Xbox 360 ‘crashing like mad’

“So, the Xbox 360’s been available for, what, 15 minutes, and already the crash reports are streaming in. According to postings on Xbox-Scene and other fan sites, some early adopters are discovering that waiting on line in the cold for two years to snag a box was the least of their problems: the game consoles are allegedly crashing during a variety of games and reporting a range of error messages,” Marc Perton reports for Engadget.

“A quick look on our forums (more, more and more) seems to indicate he’s not the only one. Several of our members seems to get crashing 360s. It doesn’t seem to be related to a specific game, as we get reports of the Xbox 360 crashing with several games. And it’s not all the same Error-number either (E79, E74, E64, real crashes, …). I quickly checked over at TeamXbox and they also have a large thread and poll about defective Xbox 360s,” XanTium reports for Xbox-Scene.com.

In somewhat related news, The Register reports that a UK woman was “was pulled unconscious from her house by two strangers after succumbing to smoke generated by a faulty Xbox… Anglesey fire and rescue spokesman Dave Evans confirmed the fire was caused by a ‘fault in an Xbox game machine’ left on standby. Back in February, Microsoft recalled 14.1m Xbox power cables shipped into Europe before 13 January, 2004 and in other territories before 23 October, 2003, as we previously reported. MS admitted to ’30 or so reports from users suffering minor burns, singed upholstery or scorched carpets as a result of power lead malfunctions.'”

  1. Reality Check,

Game systems are sold at a loss. Xboxes may cost $700 to produce, but manufacturers make it all back in game sales. Computers are sold with a healthy profit margin (regardless of manufacturer)

  2. Luke – most estimates put Microsoft’s loss on the XBox 360 at around $130. Some not even that much. So, even if the XBox 360 really costs $600 to make, that’s still $2400 less than a Powermac. I don’t see your point. Microsoft have achieved way more than Apple did (in terms of putting PowerPC’s in a box) for *way* less, and yet everyone here is so anal about Apple they can’t see it. Really. This is computer hardware not a religion.

  3. Woah! Thank u! Thank u Evgeny, The tophologist and Reality check! I am a pc user but very found of Macs and apple. I used to think there r some THINK DIFFERENT guys and that was the reason to come here. But after reading and having a lot of fun with all aggresive and pointless opinions in this site I was nearly believing in all Mac users are plain obssesed idiots. But hey u guys showed me there r some clever ones and open eyes there. So still there is some hopes…

  4. so its got faster chips in it, but the software that works with the hardware doesnt work. thats a bargain for $400 man.
at least the apple stuff works. you get what you pay for.
maybe if microsoft were able to produce something near decent software, it would be a good product.

  5. Hi, I just stumbled in here while looking for xbox 360 info on fires (because I work at Toys R Us and have to sell these things). I currently have a PC running Windows XP and I can not wait for the day when I can go out and buy a new MAC.

I’m not ignorant, I’m not a bigot, I don’t care who is gay and who is not, though I am anti right wing. I just wanted to say that as a PC/Microsoft user for the last few years I can honestly say these machines are inferior to MAC’s.

As for the Xbox, it was always a terrible idea (even with the first one). They are basically trying to sell you a computer to hook up to your tv. I prefer Nintendo or Playstation. Just my two cents. Thanks for reading.
