UK woman narrowly survives Xbox fire; users report Xbox 360 ‘crashing like mad’

“So, the Xbox 360’s been available for, what, 15 minutes, and already the crash reports are streaming in. According to postings on Xbox-Scene and other fan sites, some early adopters are discovering that waiting on line in the cold for two years to snag a box was the least of their problems: the game consoles are allegedly crashing during a variety of games and reporting a range of error messages,” Marc Perton reports for Engadget.

“A quick look on our forums (more, more and more) seems to indicate he’s not the only one. Several of our members seems to get crashing 360s. It doesn’t seem to be related to a specific game, as we get reports of the Xbox 360 crashing with several games. And it’s not all the same Error-number either (E79, E74, E64, real crashes, …). I quickly checked over at TeamXbox and they also have a large thread and poll about defective Xbox 360s,” XanTium reports for Xbox-Scene.com.

In somewhat related news, The Register reports that a UK woman was “was pulled unconscious from her house by two strangers after succumbing to smoke generated by a faulty Xbox… Anglesey fire and rescue spokesman Dave Evans confirmed the fire was caused by a ‘fault in an Xbox game machine’ left on standby. Back in February, Microsoft recalled 14.1m Xbox power cables shipped into Europe before 13 January, 2004 and in other territories before 23 October, 2003, as we previously reported. MS admitted to ’30 or so reports from users suffering minor burns, singed upholstery or scorched carpets as a result of power lead malfunctions.'”

  1. mike “Hey we can dislike gays and shut up about it and you can BE gay and shut up about it. How’s that?

No.. gays don’t like that deal..”

Deal. Providing straights shut up about their sexuality too. So no talking about your wifes/husbands/kids, no hinting to co-workers that you fancy some piece of eye candy in the office, nothing on TV showing anyone being vaguely interested in anyone of the opposite sex, absolutely nothing in the news about which celeb is dating which other celeb, no talking about weddings, and definitely no banging on about how you couldn’t work out whether that prostitute in Thailand was a man or a woman, but God you hope the latter because you quite fancied her.

Shit. Looks like there’s only computers to talk about. Lucky we’ve got MDN really, isn’t it?

  2. “Which reminds me of a favourite sport Australians like to play – Where’s that country? Show Yanks a map of the world and ask them where a country is. Then die laughing as they point to Russia when asked to point to the U.S.A., or Australia as Iraq.”

I’ll play that game stewie, and watch you piss your pants as this dumb yank points out countries that you blokes didnt even know existed.

Then you can apologize for being so stupid as to make such rash generalizations about an entire country of people.

  3. hammy: any point you’re trying to make is not worth the effort if you, regarding yourself as all enlightened and knowing, insult others like you do. You are obviously no better than those you wish to put down and might consider taking a more generous spirited approach when you’ll more than likely get/earn more respect.

  4. Once again, another product not adorned with the Apple logo gets torn apart by the MDN vultures. This is truly investigative journalism at its best. Yet another example of Apple fanatics’ “short man’s complex” graces these electronic pages. MDN and its members can’t help but bite at their competitors’ ankles, while screaming their elitist remarks at the top of their lungs. I read this site often and typically I just let it slide, but now I think I’ve had enough. I didn’t want to do this. I ignore the MDN commentaries for this very reason. Oh well, here we go.

I’m a Mac user. I love my Powerbook, but I can understand why others didn’t choose to buy a Mac. Different people prefer different things. Windows is not all viruses and spyware, as you all would like to believe. If you browse the net like an intelligent person you won’t run in to hardly any of those. Anyways, I’m consistently embarrassed by the extreme bias and childishness of this website and its members. You act like this is the first time a computer-based product has crashed. I have a Powerbook and it crashes, albeit less than Windows, but it still does. All of the consoles I’ve owned have crashed some time or another. Conversely, all the people I’ve spoken with who have an Xbox 360 (as in an audible conversation, not internet rumors) love it to death. The odd aspect of this debate is that many of you are talking up the PS3, which is made by a company you all were boycotting because of the DRM issue (another Mac irrelevant news article).

This is the only news source I rate lower than Fox. For goodness sake, what does this article have to do with Apple? I shouldn’t even have to be writing this. If I wanted Xbox news I’d venture to an Xbox site. But I don’t have an Xbox 360 and hardly do any of you. Could you all just stop giving Steve Jobs textual fellatio for one second? A company tries to ship a product for Christmas sales – big deal. Welcome to capitalism! Jobs did the same thing with the iPods and iMacs this season. The console was rushed so there were bugs still in the system. What a surprise! You all talk like the release of Mac OSX never happened.

To all you Mac elitists, stop acting like Steve Jobs is one of your “friends with benefits.” You’re infringing on Laurene’s territory. He’s a businessman out for cash like everyone else. He just happens to be the underdog and therefore must stay innovative all the time to make money. I’m sure if I were reeling in MS dollars I’d do the same thing Gates is doing. Why would he change a product that most people would buy anyways?

This site is like a venereal disease. It keeps attacking others trying to have a good time. You all make the crazy bible thumping evangelists look unbiased and sane. You all give Mac users a bad name. Can you honestly sit here believing that the other 87% or so of the population is wrong for choosing windows? You’re worse than those indie “scenesters” who think Death Cab For Cutie is the best thing since MTV. Give it a rest. Attacking others’ possible mishaps is childish and should be unnecessary for Mac users. Let the product speak for itself instead of ripping the heads off others who try to compete. Maybe once Apple enters the video game console market they can comment on Microsoft’s aforementioned endeavors, but until then MDN, please stick to Apple related content.

P.S. You all need to learn to write. The only person exempt from this is the Russian. Quit masturbating to your iPod Video porn and type with both hands for goodness sake!

P.S.S. Shadowself, did you know that 76.3% of statistics are made up on the spot? I’d point out more invalid arguments but I’m tired and want some sleep before turkey day.

  5. Why o why am I not surprised by any of this???

    A typical Microsoft product launch.

Never test the thing, poor build quality, saturate the market with crap and treat all your customers like shit.

Now, what Sony needs to do is make this a public as possible and really fuck up Microsoft.

  6. Someone posted a comment on a CNet article something along the lines of ‘Now you know why PowerMac G5’s are so big. Now you know why there was no PowerBook G5.’

IBM STILL doesn’t have a handle on heat issues with Power4 based chips. Micro$oftopoly went cheap with 2 standard PC-type fans and a water-cooled heat sink. Obviously heat management is an issue with these chips as well.

  7. I just heard a news broadcast on the radio this morning that there are “scattered” reports of crashes on the new Xbox console when playing games. Considering the bias the news media has for protecting things Microsoft, it’s not hard to conclude that the problem is more widespread than a mere mention on the news.

  8. From the article: Xbox 360: The console does not turn on
    http://support.microsoft.com/kb/907588

The MS tech article constantly refers to the ‘Ring of Light” which can be used for system diagnostics ” width=”19″ height=”19″ alt=”grin” style=”border:0;” />

Perhaps rename it to “RING of SH!T” Depending on the color and smell of your RING of SH!T, you can tell how FSCKed you XBox 360 is!!!

    Later fellow Mac zealots ;o)

    LG

MDN Word: hold – Hold on tight for the flurry of returns MS!

  9. games suck anyway. they’re for sad idiots. they suck your life away. if only i could have had back all the time i’ve wasted on games what could i have done? what could i have created? xbox? who needs it. what’s it doing here? there’s more to life than this….

  10. For Xbox Live, you’ll need to create a gamertag associated with a Microsoft Passport [you have one if you have a hotmail, msn or Xbox.com email account] and, of course, a credit card. “You will not be able to disassociate your Passport account from your gamertag, nor your gamertag from your Passport account.”

If you or the child for whom you’re setting up an account is under 18 (as signified by either the existing Xbox Live account or the Passport account), activation will require two Passport accounts and two valid e-mail addresses (one each for parent and child).

If you’ve changed your gamertag, you cannot play your old Xbox under your old gamertag unless you open an additional account with your old gamertag.

I’m not sure how this works, but how is a multi-kid family billed – per gamertag? Multibiliing? Activation link.

  11. Let’s just try the “MDN Impartiality Check” here for a moment by simply swapping the names “Apple” and “Microsoft” in this story:

“For the past 18 months Microsoft has tried and failed to get a single 3GHz PowerPC working in their $3000 professional workstation. They have also been plagued with bad luck on initial product launches, with Microsoft forums teeming with complaints of iMac G5 power supply and screen failures, iPod battery life and cracked and scratched screens. What a jok Microsoft is! However, today Apple showed their design and innovation lead by launching a gaming console with *three* 3.2GHz PowerPC cores for only $400! Apple forums show a few initial teething problems, but this is to be expected with such a revolutionary step forward. Given the initial sales figures, the handle of cases represents only a small percentage, blown out of proportion by the media’s anti-Apple bias.”

Hmm. As I thought. More biased journalism from MDN. Good for a laugh as always though! Keep it up MDN!

  12. MDN isn’t a journalism site. MDN COMPILES stories they believe Apple and Mac fans will enjoy. For fun, they add the “MDN take” which is called an “EDITORIAL”… perhaps you’ve heard of that in the newspaper? Ever read one of those?

So why is this story here? Because the majority of Apple fans HATE Microsoft. Some of us find it very funny when Gates has egg on his face, like now with this subpar “next generation” game console suffering the same fate as most things Microsoft.

The fact that people believe this site to be a true, traditional news-gathering site (with reporters out in the field, etc.) shows just how dumbed down the Internet has made people. Of course, those posting those comments probablly LIKE Microsoft, so their IQ is questionable at best.

THIS IS NOT A JOURNALISM SITE. LEARN THE G.D. F@*ING DIFFERENCE ALREADY.

  13. RC

The PC industry has been stuck at around 3.8 GHz for a while now. What’s your point? Apple can’t make a 3 Ghz chip? The whole industry has been trying to get over the same hump…

It might interest you to know that, actually, Apple’s not a chip company.

  14. >>It might interest you to know that, actually, Apple’s not a chip company.

Neither’s Microsoft. What’s your point? I just find it ironic that Microsoft can get three 3.2GHz cores in a $400 games console, whilst Apple failed to get one 3GHz core in a $3000 workstation. Yet everyone here wants to mock MIcrosoft for a few initial teething problems on their Rev A release. Something which plagues Apple with practically *every* launch of their Rev A products.

  15. Reality Check,

You raise a good point. We just like to jump on Microsoft as a joyous pastime. The Xbox 360 actually is very impressive and jam-packed with technology. My iMac G5 is slow, and I, for one, am wating anxiously for the day when OSX has the speed and snap of a Wintel computer without having to have 2 processors inside. Intel should solve that problem. Bottom line is that the Xbox 360 is pretty freaking amazing. I expect it will do pretty well unless it burns down the Smithsonian or something like that.
