Apple Store Gateway? Apple plans secret Salt Lake debut within two weeks

“In a move that showcases the state’s growing popularity as a site for retail expansion, Apple Computer plans to open within the next two weeks its first Utah store in downtown Salt Lake City’s Gateway shopping center,” Lesley Mitchell reports for The Salt Lake Tribune.

“Apple, which is counting on a dramatic grand opening, is not responding to any questions about the new store, which will carry computer hardware, software and related products such as iPods. But Gateway mall employees confirm the store, hidden behind tarp and wood barriers, will open sometime before the end of the month. Several of the company’s most avid fans believe opening day in Utah will be Nov. 25 – the day after Thanksgiving,” Mitchell reports. “‘Apple tends to be really secretive – it’s kind of like Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory,’ said Scott Bitter, partner with MacDocs in Salt Lake City, an Apple retailer and repair outlet. ‘They tend to keep things under wraps until the absolutely last minute. They like to be as dramatic as possible and really put on a show.'”

  1. Wow, until this thread I forgot that my first experience with Apple computers was in 1979 with my mormon friend’s family who had an Apple ][, and then upgraded to the ][+ the next year. The father was writing a very long technical book and I’m sure it saved him a tremendous amount of time using an Apple instead of a typewriter.

I remember first using a computer as if it were last week, playing some Adventure game for days on end. And then Microsoft Olympic Decathlon arrived — the most computer fun evar.

Oh well, that was a long time ago and I was in grade school. We grew apart soon after.

  2. dooce.com was a crackup…and done on a Mac (just to be slightly on topic, not that I really give a crap).

She sounds like my ex-mo ex-wife, who’s still my best friend, and to whom I forwarded the link, and who has responded with a voicemail laughing her ass off. We enjoy every moment of watching Mo’s get their noses tweaked.

  3. I for one am happy Apple is not afraid of the Mormons. Try being a Jack Mormon in the land of Mormons. It will be good to have a place to send the Apple non believers. (Microsoft Mormons) I am constantly asked buy everyone if I will fix there computer. I tell them sure Buy a MAC. Now I can lure them to the Gateway and give them a MAC Baptism. after I and the Mackastic priests teach them about our Profit Steve.
Maybe we can start a MUG here in UTAH.
Finally a reason to get up in the Morning.

  4. a 3 hour drive? you folks don’t know how lucky you are. to get to my ‘local’ store is a 30 minute drive, two hour flight, 30 minutes on the train, then 10 minutes on the underground (would cost me the price of a 60GB 5G iPod to do it). there is one closer but it’s even harder to get to (a seven hour drive at least)

  5. What’s funny is Salt Lake City is only about 30% Mormon – it’s the rest of the state outside the city that’s overwhelmingly LDS. So the stereotypes the state “enjoys” are especially not applicable to SLC itself.
