  1. This is excellent news! Xcode is a great product.

I spend most of my time designing and writing Windows software (gotta pay the mortgage) but it is a pure joy to go home and work in Objective-C under Xcode. Apple (or more correctly Next) has built the best development environment for making software that I have ever used in 25 years of experience.

It is as well-crafted as any of the best Apple hardware!

  2. XCode is certainly one of the best environments I’ve used to write code in.

It tends to keep on par with Microsoft Visual Studio which, bizarrely for an MS product has a great reputation. There’s a few areas where it’s not quite up to Visual Studio’s standard, but in other areas it kicks it’s arse. Interface Builder, for example, is light years ahead of Visual Studio when it comes to designing your user interface – actively helping you obey the user interface rules.

I use XCode every day, but only to edit Perl scripts for the web site I’m employed to develop. It’s disappointing not to be giving it a proper work-out – no time at home any more to work on my own projects…
