“Samsung Electronics will branch out into the online music business, a field long been dominated by Apple of the U.S. Choi Ji-Sung, the head of the company’s digital media division, on Friday told reporters the firm is preparing a service program similar to Apple’s iTunes in collaboration with domestic and foreign partners. It is to be launched soon,” The Chosun Ilbo reports. “Choi claimed Samsung MP3 players were better than Apple’s but so far lacked the music service. Once Samsung has its own, its players will be a match for the iPods, he added.”

Kim Tae-gyu reports for The Korea Times, “Samsung president Choi Gee-sung, who is in charge of the firm’s digital media division, made the remarks during a press conference late last week. ‘We are now in talks with our partners to debut a service program like iTunes of Apple. Our No. 1 priority is to help customers use our products with ease,’ the 54-year-old said. ‘Our items show healthy performances in China and Southeast Asian countries where iTunes services are not provided,’ he added.”

Way too late. Samsung should focus on making flash memory and other components for iPods, there’ll be more money in that for them than wasting time and energy fighting an already-lost battle with Apple’s iPod+iTunes juggernaut.

AGREED. Makes no business sense. They should direct their energies somewhere profitable.
The new iPod Nano uses Samsung Memory Chips. Do you really think they want to hurt their best customer?
I predict Samsung will lead the market in Korea only.
Now we know why Apple canceled that Memory Chip Deal with Samsung.
Magic word “Degree”
Sounds like Samsung has been reading the MSFT playbook:
Choi Ji-Sung announces they are preparing…
It is to be launched soon….
its players will be…..
‘We are now in talks with our partners…
IT’S NOT READY YET? YOU DON’T EVEN HAVE AGREEMENTS W/ RECORD COMPANIES IN PLACE? What is this, Vapor-ware? Don’t even bother announcing something you’d LIKE to do in the “Future”. Unless you have something market ready & rolled out in this industry, you’ll be done before you get started.
…give me a break! Go Home! Your mother is calling you!
That’s one thing that blows away the competition, when Apple announces it’s newest product, BAM! it’s already on the Apple store ready for sale. You want it? go buy it! Ya gotta love that Instant Gratification.
In the ,90’s MSFT could get away with hoisting an idea up the flagpole to measure the market’s interest without even having the code written yet, but hey it was a monopoly and could get away with this practice.
Sounds like some Tech exec. has an ego problem.
Much more important is for Samsung to conduct an internal transplant at Apple to exchange its design and idea genes.
If Apple keeps up its blockbuster product lines and removing them while they are at their peak (iPod mini) Samsung do not stand a chance with this.
But then Apple may go bust of course (hoho).
Running an internet based music store is complex and not very profitable (especially for our competitors). We have done pretty well with the iPod devices since we let PC users join the party. We are not copying the work of others. We are creating things that make peoples lives better and more fun.
Thanks to all our devoted fans. We’ve got some really exciting products coming that will blow your mind.

I think this is great.
Keep the pressure on.
Context.
The comments by Samsung regard the untapped Asian market, outside of Japan. Of course iTMS has no presence in Asia outside of Japan. Samsung is taking the iPod, iTMS, iTunes three-headed model and want to apply it to markets where iTMS doesn’t have a foothold. It’s not a iTMS killer.
