I also do not have usb 2.0 I’m using a fruit imac, running 10/3 fine though, and running itunes fine. I just can’t use a damn ipod.
Apple has abandoned its FireWire-only computers. It started with the “optional” FireWire cable last year, and now USB 2 is a system requirement.
I’m a bit pissed at them for that, considering Apple was releasing USB 1.1 computers only two years ago.
2gb for $200 and 4for $250? I think I like the iPod mini better. I’d rather have more space for my music than a smaller player. Hopefully I can still get the mini.

If that really is USB 2.0 only, then it sucks.
USB 2,0 is too recent an addition to the whole Mac lineup, and there are too many AOI macs that can’t take a card to add USB 2.0.
It was bad enough when they ditched the firewire cable.

Heaven forbid any announcements about Macs…sigh. Anywho, I must have an iPod Nano, and I WILL HAVE ONE!!! This is a superb product that takes KEWL to a whole new level. Is this the big media even announcment? A little anti-climactic.

The mini will still be sold, surely ? Even if maybe only the 6GB model. So not a rip off. It’s a choice. The same choice as was introduced when there was a 4GB mini for not much less than a 20GB regular iPod.

So rival MP3 player makers are going to compete with Apple on design, huh? Well, they’ll need a whopping hunk of good luck now. This little marvel is going to sell like nothing we’ve ever seen. With its tiny size and color display, plus the almighty click-wheel, it’s going to be a huge hit, and will further cement Apple’s dominance in the space. I’m pretty sure it’s also going to really put a dent in the sales of the iPod shuffle, addressing as it does the criticism about the shuffle’s lack of a display or navigation controls.

Ipod Mini is now legacy. The Nano is awesome. Yes the mini had more storage for the same price, BUT the Nano has a color screen, has photo capabilities and is 62% smaller. The Nano is Bad Ass!

the iPod nano’s price is completely justified, when you consider that your getting all three ipod models rolled into one:
1. the thickness of a shuffle
2. the capacity of a mini
3. the capabilities of a photo

I guess it’s time to start giving away my older iPods as gifts to relatives.
I got a second gen 20 GB, a B&W U2 in perfect condition, a 1GB iPod shuffle that’s just about worthless and a 3rd Gen B&W iPod which gets the most use.
The sec gen is a bit old and beatup, makes a good car iPod. So I guess the U2 and the shuffle are going.
That wraps up part of my holiday shopping.

Over here in the UK iPod mini prices are round about the same as the new nano prices for the same storage ithink, so for us its much much better value.
Apologies. Didn’t realise they pulled the mini. That sort of sucks. No little pink ones for the ladies ? I think that’s a marketing blunder to be honest … unless they make a packet in pink nanotubes.
But the size and the colour screen and the photo capability I think make up for the capacity to a large extent.
On the iPod page at the Apple store online, the icon for the regular ipods (halfway down, middle of page) show 30 and 60 GB, although above it lists the 20 and 60 GB. Did someone screw up and announce an upgrade to 30GB for the low end full size iPod?
I’m looking because this sealed my decision to go with a regular iPod since I don’t have USB2
USB 2.0 PCI cards sell for less than $15. But Flash memory is much slower than a hard drive, so this doesn’t look like it will be good for data storage.

Really beautiful design. Small size is great. They will sell a boatload of these.
HOWEVER THE FACT THAT IT IS USB ONLY REALLY SUCKS AND IS A MAJOR DRAWBACK.
I hope it will integrate with a card reader so you can download your camera to it. This is not yet clear.
I think with the lanyard headphones this is gonna be majorly like a fashion accessory. However, the screen will be hanging upside down. They should add the functionality to have the screen flip 180 when hanging down so it is right side up and you can display the artwork of what you are listening to. That would be too cool.
APPLE PLEASE ADD FIREWIRE CONNECTIVITY TO THIS ASAP!!!!!!! Asking Apple users to use something that is inferior but “good enough” smacks way too much of the Dark Side.

iPods are a trendy and expensive cry for approval.
iPods just help to dilute the quality of music even further. I enjoy listening to one CD at a time, knowing all of the tracks a band produces, not just the hits. Otherwise how can you really know what a band’s all about? Ipods just make music a technological commodity, something material which has no meaning except that it reflects your status. Long live real music and real music lovers.

Apple going USB only is their subtle way of getting you to upgrade your hardware so it has USB 2 (if you find the speed intolerable that is).
However, it’s a good move on their part since USB 1 has been included since the first iMac in 1998, and PC’s since then too – Firewire is much rarer on PCs.
Do not eat iPod nano.
(I’m sure someone else will inform iDon’t that it is possible to listen to complete albums, one at a time, on an iPod.)

For all the people that are saying NO FIREWIRE etc. whats to stop you putting the nano in a third part Firewire 800 dock and syncing it that way? It’s not supported by apple but it does work, why wouldn’t it work with this one? If it does BAD ASS finally got a use for my FW800 port on my PB

You only do that one time at the beginning. USB 2 is good enough for that. You’d really want to pay more for Firewire support for that one time? Firewire is great but you don’t need it for every single thing.

I looked at the Apple spec page, and it’s still not clear that the nano will work with usb 1.1. But doesn’t it HAVE to work with 1.1 ?? Isn’t that in the 2.0 specs?

It never fails … but it usually happens to me. I buy a new laptop … within a week Apple announces they’re going to intel. I buy a new iPod … within a week a better one is announced. I buy a new cell phone … within a week they release one that works with iTunes.
I’ve long-since quit trying. What I have works great. When the day comes to upgrade, I do … knowing that, within a week, something better will be released. It’s a law of nature soon to be called “Greg’s Law.”

I second that request. Can someone please verify if USB 1.1 will or won’t work? Speed issues aside, I see no reason why 1.1 wouldn’t work.

Scroll down to the bottom. Under “Mac System Requirements” it says “Macintosh Computer with USB (USB 2.0 Recommended)” Under “Windows System Requirements” it says ” PC with USB port or card (USB 2.0 Recommended).”
I’m assuming that it would not be stated in that manner if it were USB 2.0 only.

I bought a FireWire cable for my iPod mini on ebay for $8 including shipping, works fine and transfers fast! I don’t see why it wouldn’t work for the nano. I have an old 15″ flat screen iMac so yeah I’m bummed, no usb 2.0 for me, but c’mon $8 ain’t bad.
iDon’t: Quit saying that mp3 players make people not listen to albums and only singles, that may be true for smaller capacity players but ask the users of 20, 40 and 60 gig iPods, with that amount of space why wouldn’t you want a whole album.

They should have kept the bright fun colors. I see the smaller iPod and color screen being good, but USB only? And less storage? Boo.
Ordered a 4GB white version the moment it came out, should be here by Saturday. Will make a nice addition to my 60GB photo but I think i will sell my 1GB shuffle (nobody needs 3 iPods!).
I think the form factor is worth the price, the perfect ‘work-pod’ and an eagerly awaited new toy.

For those disappointed that the nano has less storage than the mini for the same price, never fear – flash memory is getting growing in capacity and getting cheaper seemingly every day. It shouldn’t be long before either prices of the nano drop or, if the price stays the same, the storage capacity increases.
Not quite the same, but the nano tubes (ugh, what a bad joke) do have some bright colors. Not my thing, but they will appeal to some.
Going to get a black nano so I don’t have to put wear and tear on my 60 GB when I run…
According to MacWorld magazine, the nano will sync using USB 2.0 only. While the dock connector FireWire cable will charge the nano, it will not sync via FireWire unfortunately.
