“Apple has exceeded average PC market growth in the European markets in the second quarter 2005. The company achieved 48 per cent market growth (year-on-year) in the European, Middle East and African (EMEA) markets. This contrasts with the 23 per cent growth of the PC market as a whole, according to new research from analyst firm, IDC,” Jonny Evans reports for Macworld UK. “Apple’s 48 per cent growth is eclipsed by Acer’s 68.4 per cent, as the latter firm maintains an aggressive grab for market share here.”
“Apple has itself eclipsed the achievement of Europe’s second biggest supplier, Dell, which achieved 32 per cent growth,” Evans reports. “In the quarter, HP led the market, with 2,436,000 units shipped and 20.8 per cent growth. Dell shipped 1,928,000 PCs. Apple shipped 283,000 Macs in EMEA, according to IDC, for 2 per cent market share. While statistically this means Apple remains a junior player in contrast to Dell or HP, its 48 per cent unit sales growth eclipses all others, bar Acer.”

“Dell shipped 1,928,000 PCs. Apple shipped 283,000 Macs”
In Germany, Apple is practically invisible in the marketplace.
Macaholic…..Tempus has a life, its called being first on MDn posts!
I have always found that when I’m in continental Europe the market penetration is very low, visibly at least, when compared to the UK. I’m not sure why that would be, but it would be interesting to see in which countries those Macs are being sold. I’d be willing to bet that a large proportion are going to the UK. Its good to hear that Apple are expanding internationally, not just in the US, in any case.

My friend was just in Germany and Italy and said iPods aren’t as widespread there as elsewhere. Found that interesting. Is this the case?
Yep it is the case. Riding the Paris underground white earphones are rare. In London they are very common, maybe not on the scale they are in the US.
Reality Check:
The same goes for Latin America – Brazil, Mexico, and Brazil (3 of the world largest market). Apple is really non-existant there. The Apple mini may be the right system for that market.
Having said that yes you can’t really compare Dell shipments w/ Apple. Dell has a much bigger piece of the pie but if you look at the margins of all major Windows PC makers they are paper thin and grow has been marginal at best. Dell used to be my account so I know them well. The fact that Apple’s growth percentage is at 48% is pretty remarkable.
Old Europe is behind in most things these days so this may not be surprising. Most prefer the renaissance period to the iPod era!!
Actually, there are some very keen flag flyers for Apple in these countries. There are loads of Widgets coming from France for example and I know a Prof of Law in Italy who has 2 iPods and 3 Macs. What pioneers they must be in a desert of pc’s…
The UK on the other hand is going great guns towards Apple products and its getting better by the day imo.
Macaday – it is not because “Old Europe” is behind things – it is because “Old Apple” thinking is still going on here in Europe. Apple can´t figure out how to market its products in Germany (and the rest of “Old Europe”.
Within a 50 mile radius of where I live, I know of one store that sells Apple computers. There are over 2 million people living in this area. And that Apple selling store (Gravis) is on an out of the way, back side street about 15 blocks from the downtown area with only street parking (read: none) available.
There is some iPod advertising on German MTV – but no other advertising on main stream media for any Apple products.
Apple does little or no marketing and promoting in Germany.
At the gym I go to I have seen one person with an Apple shuffle – never seen an iPod (other than mine) at the gym. Lots of people have MP3 players though.
The iPod is sold at one of the larger chains in Germany, Media Markt – but it is buried among the stuff there. You just about have to ask to find one.
So the problem is not “Old Europe”, but “Old Apple” thinking.
SAw a Bondi iMac on Corry STreet the other day. First sighting of a mac in a british soap that i know of

**uh, macaholic… no offense, but… you’re sitting ’round watching soaps… and you’re telling me that I need to get a life?
Here in Ireland it seems to be the same as the UK. I’d say 4 out of 5 people I see on the street/bus/tram here have the white earbuds on. The only shops NOT selling iPods must be the Sony Centre.
And there must be many people like myself who have an iPod but don’t use the white buds.
