Vehicle drives itself (no human driver and no remote control) thanks to Apple’s Mac OS X

“Dora” is the world’s first fully-autonomous (no human driver and no remote control) vehicle driven by Apple Computer’s Mac OS X. The entire development and race management efforts at Team Banzai is being done using Apple Mac OS X technology. As the Team Banzai website reads, “all Macs… all the time.”

Team Banzai is one of only 40 teams from around the country to advance by invitation to the national semi-finals of the 2005 DARPA Grand Challenge.

Selected from a field of almost 200 teams that applied and competed through earlier regional elimination rounds, Team Banzai is proud to be participating in this exciting head-to-head competition in an attempt to win $2 million.

Thank you.]

  1. Frankly, I don’t care about any of it.

    Except for this:

Please stop using Wikipedia as a reference source. It’s not an authoritative source of anything, it’s a popular collection of folklore. I just added myself to the line of presidential succession.

  2. “I appeal to publishing houses and weblog owners everywhere to permanently ban all split infinitives!”

This sentence has a split infinitive. If it wasn’t intentional that you are a buffoon. If it was intentional, you should have made more than one or made it funnier somehow. The sentence as it isn’t very funny so if its a joke its not obvious.

  3. 1. It was intentional.

    2. I think you meant, “then you are a buffoon” and “the sentence as it is isn’t very funny.”

    3. But good jokes are supposed to be subtle!

  4. For the most part we fail to respect our own decisions based on the
scrutiny of others that we felt had more underlying knowledge of the
subject at hand…therefore by second guessing oneself (except in fun:
knowing the facts but letting loose) is mearly an admission that you
have unfinished business with a mentor of some kind.

  5. PC Apologist,

You might want to drop by Wikipedia. By looking at the entry’s history, you’ll discover that your vandalism has already been repaired (I didn’t repair it).

Your argument is dead wrong, in fact. The fact that there is a discussion page on Wikipedia means that even more info/POV can be found on Wikipedia than other encyclopedias on the net. Entries are updated often to resolve issues that arise in the discussion area.

  6. After reading all of these posts, I have come to 2 conclusions.

    1. I have wasted 15 minutes of my life that I will never get back.

    2. You all desperately need to get laid.

This has to be the dumbest argument since “Less filling vs Tastes great.”

  7. Don’t get me wrong. It’s always great to hear about such Apple related
developments. It’s also nice that MDN…in it’s continued reporting of
these matters is not only getting the links up but is also finding the
best Headline for it’s readers…better late than never.

It’s a spark factory after all…no cameras please!

  8. damnit!!! i peed my pants laughing at these posts. this has got to be the funniest thing in a long time.

and i would think more people would have picked up on ralph the wonder llama – or are most of you too young to remember that one?

    now, i need some shrubbery!!!

i fart in your general direction. your mother was a hamster and your father smelt of elderberries. now go away you english pig-sucking-swine before i taunt you a second time.

  9. This is pretty cool, though. Look through their website and you will see the competitors. Team Bonzai did a great job at keeping the overall functionality of the vehicle without sacrificing the look of the VW. Everyone else made their vehicles look wierd with all of the exterior add-ons.

Leave it to the Mac team to not screw up the design of the original vehicle.
