Latest Apple iPod shuffle lookalike from Luxpro features 64×48-resolution OLED display

“Although Apple was able to temporarily banish Luxpro’s Super Shuffle MP3 player at CeBIT this year, Taiwan-based Luxpro is openly displaying its latest MP3 player, the MX-585D at Computex 2005,” Eric Fan and Emily Chuang report for DigiTimes. “The model bears more than a passing resemblance to Apple’s iPod shuffle.”

Fan and Chuang report , “With a 64×48-resolution OLED display, the latest model also supports Digital Rights Management (DRM). It is compatible with three audio formats, including MP3, WMA and WAV. The model charges to 80% of capacity in just two hours and offers continuous use for 10 hours on a full charge, according to the company. In addition, the model supports 10 different languages.”

  1. I think it is great to have competition. They should make this things without recording restrictions for those of us who want to store whatever music/audio files we want to carry around. How come we as consumer give so much control to manufactures and music companies for the sake of brand loyalty?

……which the Company claims is not a real model for just a great way to see the glorious LuxPro name in the news. Yay.

  3. Apple’s upcoming new 2gb ‘shuffle’ with screen is exactly like this. But now the copycats are to market before Apple (shows a good insider in China gave the new plans to LuxPro). This has gotta make Steve Jobs poop himself, veggie diet and all.

  4. I thought they could never get that working right. Don’t they have a bad failure rate?

Now, a real Apple Shuffle with an LCD screen that didn’t need a backlight, that would be a {horse} of a different color. That I would want to have–with Apple quality, not badly-fitting LuxPro junk.

There’ve been some good breakthroughs with OLED recently, though the longevity is still not up to LCD standards.

“[…] an LCD screen that didn’t need a backlight […]”

Uh…sorry, it doesn’t work that way. LCD displays do not send out light. They are reflective/transmissive. So an un-backlit LCD would work fine until you turned out the lights. Then nothing. No light reflecting off the LCD, no image.

Yes, I agree it is good to have competition, but that is no excuse for ripping off other people’s designs.

Besides, a screen that size can’t really be that useful can it? I imagine that if Apple ever do introduce a Shuffle with a screen, it will be a long thin one. It would be used purely to display information about the current track, not navigation at all.

  7. 64×48 is pathetic! My icons are 128×128 ” width=”19″ height=”19″ alt=”wink” style=”border:0;” />
If the shuffle was to get a display that was actually *usable* it would take up more or less the whole front of it.

I agree, no one should steal anything, but as a product developer I know that the reality is that we have 18 months of lead anytime we introduce a (copywrited ) not patented product before the competion does a minor modification and releases it to the market., The challenge for us is to make the barrier to entry more difficult but never impossible. I agree that if apple were to release one wiith a screen they would do it lenght – wise but then you could say they are copying Sony. It is the nature of things today. We don’t have to like them, they just are 🙁 –
    **patented producs have slightly longer
