Fastest Apple G5 Power Macs versus fastest Windows PCs

Bare Feats has posted various test results comparing “CPU Crunching” for a Dual G5/2.5GHz Power Mac vs. Dual G5/2.0GHz Power Mac vs. Dual Xeon 3.4GHz vs. Pentium 4 3GHz vs. 64 bit Athlon 2.2GHz = 3GB of 333MHz DDR which shows that the top G5 Power Mac (dual 2.5GHz) won every CPU intensive test except one.

Test results here.

Bare Feats explains, “Though the G5 Power Macs did well in the CPU tests, they were pretty much ‘smoked’ in the 3D GRAPHICS tests. Part of it as to do with how much effort developers put into optimizing (or re-writing) the game code to take advantage of the unique features of the G5 Power Macs. Quake 3 Arena, though considered obsolete by avid gamers, is a perfect example of the potential of the G5 Power Macs to excel in gaming.”

  1. Healthy: “There are plenty of other productive activities that DON’T promote isolation and physical lethargy.”

Sitting in a room with a bunch of friends and having good fun is bad?

And how can you preach this is wrong as you sit anaonymously at your computer, all alone, isolated, with no physical activity other than your fingers typing spewing your bildge here at Mac DAily News?
To quote a previous poster: Hypocrite.

    And obviously not a parent.

  2. Actually, D&D was a very social game. Several people had to get together to play and spend hours at a time talking and basically sharing time. It employed a lot of imagination and even ethical dilemnas.

Sure don’t see that on a computer these days. Or in much else other than watching sports, a true waste of time.

  3. Parent of a NON-gamer says: “Now, mid-way through his Senior year, he has a 3.92 GPA, scored 1520 on the SAT, is starting point guard on the varsity basketball team, and was named to last year’s All-State track team in the Mile. He’ll be attending Columbia in the Fall.”

Is that all? My son has a 4.0 GPA in his senior in High School plus a 4.0 GPA in his evening classes in Physics and Theromodynamics he takes at the local college (he will complete his ,
scored 1600 on the SAT while blindfolded and his left hand tied behind his back, iss starting point guard and center on the varsity basketball team, plus plays trumpet and drums in the band during half time, is head cheerleader, is a part-time teacher to the specially challenged students, president and vice-president of the student body and Senior Class, is the Prom King and Queen, voted most likely to succeed, owns his own multimilion dollar software company that he recently sold to Google, made $250,000 last week Daytrading stocks, was first in the mile, javelin, 400 meter relay, and shot put in last years All-State track meet.
He just got the good news that his second book in the triolgy – 1100 pages this time – will be published next fall, movie to come out a year later. He and Snoop Dog will be singing together for the sound track. Brittney is begging to be on the CD, too, but my son is partial to Gwen Stefani.
    And guess what?
My son play games all the time. ALL THE TIME. Warcraft, Medal of Honor, Counterstrike,Battlefield, Need for Speed, you name it he plays it. And he is good. Won $50,000 in last years Counterstrike contest in San Francisco (he rode his bicycle there and back). If he is not playing his computer at home, he´s got a portable Nintendo game running or he´s playing games on his phone.
Why hold your son back? Let him play games, too.
Maybe someday he can be as good as mine-my son the computer game player.
Oh yeah, my son is 14.

  4. hey, i coincidentally arrived at an ATM cash machine built by Diebold while it was ‘rebooting’. It was running, ready?, OS/2. Gee. BTW, when the machined ‘finished’, it was OUT OF SERVICE!

  5. Lets see the basics first.
Use a Mac @ home, a Dell @ work. Would rather use a Mac at work, but that is neither here nor there.
I used to play alot of games on the computer when younger, at sometimes still do, but quite rarely.
I play RPGs, started with D&D. I sometimes still play RPGs, I find it a good way to interact with my friends. Beats watching sports.

Anyways, this whole Gamers are loser’s and I own a company and I am better, reminds me of my dad can beat-up your dad.

I know people that never played a game in their life and they are losers. I know people that used to play games alot and that have genius IQs.
What is the measure of a man. If he runs his own company, as many of you seem to think, how much money he makes?.

    Sorry guys,
Step of the capitalist pedestal for a minute and consider other options. Someone that needs to demean and diminish to make themselves feel better obviously has some problems.
All that matters is that you are happy with yourself and that you have good friends.

  7. Gamers are losers. Just accept it. When the sad little gamers like the “not…” commenter and others try to refute the normal posts (like that of the parent of a non-gamer), they just make themselves look even worse. What a sad, sad sort.

It’s a good thing you’re trapped in your little gaming world because you clearly couldn’t handle the real world.

  8. Only a Dult Mac user would pit a dual 64 bit CPU System to a Single 32 bit CPU.

These test are completely flawed, just as the origanal G5 analysis proved.

Face it you put together a system, using dual FX’s(much more of a resonable test) these G5’s would be put to Shame.

  9. Also, Photoshop’s optimization in OS X has matured. The amount of effort they put into optimizing windows versions is almost nill. Especially in the multiprocessing area.

  10. It’s obvious that the PowerMacs are just marketing hype. They can’t cut it in the real world against real workhorses.

You Mac zealots should just bend over and take it like men. All that money wasted and you could’a had a Dell. Too bad for you.

  11. People like “Pathetic Comments” are losers in that they think everything they don´t do is wrong.

They think that a person sitting at a computer having fun playing a game for an hour or two is wrong, BUT yet they spend an hour a two a day alone, in their parent´s basement, hunched over their computer coming to a Mac fan site and waste their time writing ignorant statements (“It’s a good thing you’re trapped in your little gaming world because you clearly couldn’t handle the real world.”) while making up fantasy e-mail addresses for linked their name (“GamersAreLosers@JustAcceptIt.com”).
Who can´t handle the real world “Pathetic Comments”?

Who can´t handle the real world…?
YOU. Loser. Just as the guy above said.

BTW, if you think that it takes “an hour or two a day” to post one random comment to one story on MDN, then you need a reading lesson or a typing lesson – or both. Your habitual mind-numbing gaming, on the other hand…

  14. The childish off-topic discussion about gaming has really detracted from a few good posts about the topic. This seems to give credence to the oft-cited observation that the bulk of the individuals in “the gaming world” are pimply faced, teen-aged boys who may be a bit insecure and antisocial. That said, I don’t think its really proper to pick on them so ferociously since they are probably victims of inadequate parenting and have a poor support structure in their lives.

  15. I’m not exactly sure what these folks are doing wrong, but with minimal binary fiddling on my 2×2.5 with a 6800 and 4 gigs of ram, I can easily get over 100 Frames in Halo, and that’s with everything tunred on, i.e. 9x AA, and 8x Anistrophic

  16. John Carmack loves the macintosh. The first public unveiling of Doom III being on a mac showed this. I’ll wager, such that carmack himself is doing extensive procesor optimization for doom III on mac, that when DOOM III mac does come out, these Mac bashing folks will eat their words. Oh, and another thing. I have games well over 400 applications installed on my machine. All seem to work fine with no slow down. Anyone wanna try that on a windows machine.

  17. I am pathetic sh*tbag who lives in my mommy’s basement, where I spend most of my free time jerking off with the lingerie section of the sears catalog. Mommy says I might have to stop, because I now weigh 450 pounds and since I can’t see past my gut mommy doesn’t want me to put my hands anywhere without looking. I might have to get a girlfriend, but since I’m 47 and have an ass approximately the size of Massachusetts, I think I’ll order a real doll instead.

    oh, and PC’s rule…

  18. Dual 2.5 Owner – “However the people out there who are worried about the money thing, you really need to reconsider the whole situation. Hardcore gamers steal just about every game, they order parts off forums and wholesale sites. No one is making money off these people. Seriously. “

Do you actually believe your own dribble? The gaming industry is a multi billion dollar industry. Its also the forefront of new technological advances (Kindof like the Porn Industry ” width=”19″ height=”19″ alt=”smile” style=”border:0;” />).

Wow, Are you living under a rock dude?

“Higher” as in, How much higher can you get smokin that stuff.

Oh yeah, and like NMFY said…PC’s Rule

  19. Stop it! All of you please! No one machine can be better than the other. This kind on talk messes with my warm fuzzy feeling, that all is equal in the world. The PC is just as good as the Mac. There is nothing better than something else except that I am smarter than all of you because I think this way. I’m too smart and scholarly to be merely equal to you all.
By the way, if one machine gets more praise than the other, start to praise the other until that gets too much then switch again. Equal my friends, equal! Ooh! I feel so warm!

MARINA DEL REY, Calif. — The popular computer game Unreal Tournament 2003 invited players to become the “ultimate techno-gladiator of the future,” blasting foes with “a smorgasbord of ferocious, flesh-chewing weaponry.”

Now, researchers are turning the game into a tool for U.S. troops in Iraq — not to make them fiercer in combat, but to sharpen language and cultural skills that could help them avoid a potentially deadly confrontation.

Epic Games, the North Carolina software company that created Unreal Tournament, also distributes modification tools that lets users change the game’s world into anything from a futuristic space arena to a realm of blimp-borne buccaneers.
